Wrestling News - October 30, 2015

We're another week closer to the start of Wrestling Season! Here are a few notes to help get you ready for action to start.

First of all, looking back to last Saturday, I put up a post with a few photos from the Open Practice and the Tailgater on "The FALL"'s blog, check those links to see, or see the links on the right side of this page under Blog Archive.

Next, Oregon State has put out a series of articles this week on a review of the weight classes. Check here for links to all those articles and more. Get the scoop on who will likely be in the line-up.

Don't forget - next Wednesday evening, Nov. 4 at 7 pm, Gill Coliseum - will be the Intra-squad. We'll have the battles for the starting spots at each weight in the line-up.

Immediately following the matches there will be a short program for a Social  over in Reser. This time we will be on the second floor in the Loge, instead of the third floor Club.

Coach Zalesky would like to introduce the entire team to the fans, so come on over for a quick snack and meet the team. We don't want to keep the guys up on a school night, so it won't be a long event. Both the wrestling and the Social will be free to all.

Have you sent in your membership dues yet? We've had a pretty good response so far. Remember, if you get your application in before the deadline on Nov 6, your name will be entered in a drawing for a prize! You can find the membership form under "links" on the right side of this page.

Besides the Intra-squad, there is another free event this season - the home opener, Nov. 21. Considering there will be a total of 3 meets taking place, that's a lot of wrestling for free! So even if you might have to pay to park, it is still a great deal. Carpool and it's even better! Time is still To Be Determined.

A "Head's Up" for those planning to attend the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas, Dec. 4-5, 2015. In recent years the Cliff Keen has been held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This year the tournament will be held at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. It is a part of the Convention Center, but it is not located in the same area.

The Cashman Center is located at 850 N Las Vegas Blvd, about 4-5 miles north of the main Convention Center. For all the information about the Cliff Keen Tournament, check here. Hopefully many of you will be going. We usually have a good crowd of Beavers on hand, let's have another good cheering section!

Tailgate! - October 24, 2015

Shawn Steiner helps toss burgers on the grill!
Once the Practice was over, everyone made their way down to the Tailgate Party outside - by then it was pretty warm up in the wrestling room! Lots of food awaited the group.

Everyone was happy to greet Jess Lewis who came in for Practice and the Tailgate. Considering how much he's been through lately, Jess was looking good! It definitely pays to be a wrestler, even many years later! Athletes just heal up faster.

There was plenty to eat, burgers, brats, salads, fruit, chips and desserts.  This year it didn't even rain to dampen spirits!

Before the evening was over the marching band stopped by to stir up the crowd!

A group of parents and fans gathered on Saturday during Homecoming at Oregon State to check out the progress for the OSU Wrestling team.

Head Coach Jim Zalesky put the team through their paces with lots of stops to make corrections on technique. The drills were more intense and the hand to hand action had more urgency to it.

It won't be long now before the Intra-Squad Meet in Gill Coliseum - next week, Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm, November 4.

Then the guys get their first taste of action outside of their own teammates the following Sunday, November 8 at Pacific University's Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove.

But that will come soon enough. Once the hour and a half of practice was over, everyone headed downstairs for the tailgate party outside. More pictures from the Tailgate will be in the next post.

Open Practice & Tailgate This Saturday!

Open Practice Sept 25, Austin Morehead & Amar Dhesi
This coming Saturday, October 24, will be the second and final Open Practice for the Oregon State Wrestling team before their season begins. Kick-off for the football game for The Beavers vs Colorado will be 7:30 pm, so Practice should begin about 4:00. (In the email sent out, time was listed as 4:30, but the correct time is 4:00.) Practice will last 1.5 hours and will be followed immediately by the Parent/Fan Tailgate party which will be set up outside the entrance to the Wrestling Practice facility.

The Dale Thomas Wrestling Room is upstairs in the Sports Performance Center, the outside door faces the west side of Gill Coliseum and is just north of Reser Stadium. If you are planning to attend the football game, you'll have plenty of time to tailgate, then walk across the street to the stadium.

Here are suggestions for contributing to the Tailgate:

For those that want to contribute food for this event, please follow these guidelines.  If your last name begins with A-M, bring salads/fruit/veggies and N-Z, bring desserts/other side dish. Also, please bring your own beverages and everything else will be provided.

There is usually some bottled water available.

Have you sent in your application for "The FALL" Fan Club yet? There is still time. A link to the application form can be found on the right side of the page under "Links." Deadline is Nov. 6.  If you need a little incentive to get your application in on time, we are adding a boost this year. For all in by Nov 6, we will be having a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant for the lucky individual, couple or family whose name is drawn. Having your application in by the deadline helps your FALL Board get everything ready for you for our first regular season Social.

To get you caught up to speed with all the wrestling news at OSU, three articles have been posted in October. You can find them all posted here:

The beginning of the dual meet season will be following rapidly. Just about 2 weeks from today, Wednesday Nov 4, will be the Intra-Squad meet in Gill Coliseum, as team mates battle for the starting spots in the line-up. Even though this is a week night, the Intra-Squad will be followed by a quick Social, held in the Loge in Reser Stadium. This will be free to all.

November 8, a Sunday, Pacific University in Forest Grove hosts the Mike Clock Open. Most of the Beavers will be entered in this tournament.

The next Sunday, November 15, is full of action for the Beavs. The starting team will back in Albany, New York for the North East Duals. The other wrestlers have an opportunity for another Open tournament that day, the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, California.

Saturday, November 21, will be the home opener for the Beavs, as they host both Utah Valley and Rutgers, who will also wrestle each other here as well. This great day of action will be free to all fans. Until the football game is scheduled, we won't know the starting time. Wrestling has to be at a different time slot than the football game. You might want to keep that parking map handy for that day, there will be a lot of people in town!

Dust off your OSU Wrestling yard signs and get ready for the season to begin!

Wrestling News, FALL Application, Etc.

Wrestling Season is almost here! Only 2 more weeks until the next Open Practice which will be followed up by the Parent-Fan Tailgate Party. The Intrasquad is less than a month away, followed in 4 days by the Mike Clock Open Tournament. A week after that the Beavers open their dual season at the Northeast Duals, and there you are - in wrestling season!!

A few details to help you get ready - first, it's time to join the FALL Fan Club or renew your membership if you have been a member before. You can find the application here oin the right side of the page under "Links".  It is a "fillable" pdf file. All you have to do is download and save it to your computer, open it, fill in the blanks, save it, print it and send it and your check in the mail to FALL Club Treasurer, Brandon Perkins. Brandon's mailing address is on the form. Membership dues continue to remain the same, $35 single, $50 Couple, $75 family and $10 for an OSU student.

To pay for your membership with a credit card, mark the appropriate box on the form, fill in the rest of the information and mail it in to Brandon. We will run your credit card when you are at the Dual or Social. Why mail it in? Because then we will have all of your membership information and can have your packet of materials waiting for you when you pay. No standing around waiting while we scramble to put it together for you!

Next - to those who received this as an email, I attached the most recent version of the Schedule. However, be advised that it is still subject to change. Due to having to work around football and television schedules, some dates are still TBD or could change, but you will be notified.

The Open Practice on Oct 24 will be held 3 hours before kick-off at the football game, which won't be announced until about a week before the date. Open Practice will last 1.5 hours. The Tailgate Party will be held at the entrance to the Wrestling Practice facility immediately following Practice. The Coaches sent this message about the tailgater and the football game:

For those that want to contribute food for this event, please follow these guidelines.  If your last name begins with A-M, bring salads/fruit/veggies and N-Z, bring desserts/other side dish. Also, please bring your own beverages and everything else will be provided. If you would like to get tickets to the Oregon State vs. Colorado Football Game, a promo code has been set up to purchase tickets at a group discount, tickets will be $53 with the promo code.  You can access this promotion by visiting www.beavertickets.com, clicking Promo Codes and entering the code OSUWR.  We have a block of 75 tickets set aside.  Deadline to get football tickets is October 19

On to the first home action, the Tri-Duals with Utah Valley and Rutgers on Saturday November 21. There will be three duals that day, first between Utah Valley and Rutgers, then the Beavers will take on Utah Valley for the second dual. OSU and Rutgers will be the third dual. All of this will be free!! That's a lot of wrestling at no charge! Bring your friends! Get your friends who are there for football to check out wrestling while they are walking by! Most of the parking lots around campus will be pay lots filled with football tailgaters that day, due to the football game, so parking could be tricky. The closer to Gill, the greater the charge, close is $40/car. More information about parking can be found on this Oregon State page. Time is still to be determined until the football game time is arranged.

The last bit of news: Congratulations to Bob Buzzard, FALL Club member; Bob has been named to the Iowa High School Athletic Association Wrestling Hall of Fame! Bob will be inducted Feb. 20, 2016. For the story, check out this link at InterMat Thanks to FALL Board member Craig Scharer for spotting that story and sharing the link!

Don't forget - get your membership in now, wrestling season will be here before you know it!

OSU Wrestling Tailgate & Other News

If you haven't received the latest email from the coaching staff, it follows below. There's lots of good information in it, so you don't want to miss it.

Meanwhile, a couple of other items for your attention. The Open Practice last Friday afternoon was a great introduction to the season for the lucky ones who got to stop by. I did take a few pictures that are posted here on The FALL's blogsite: See the links under Archives on the right for

"Open Practice - Sept 25 - Part 1 & 2"

Your next chance to see the team will be on October 24 - the subject of the email below.

Don't forget, for friends of the late Bill Geister:

ANNOUNCEMENT: Public Celebration of LIfe for William Joel Geister. CLACKAMAS HIGH SCHOOL West Campus (New)
14486 SE 122nd Avenue
Clackamas, OR 97015
Sunday, October 4th 3:00 PM.

To read a story about Bill: story at Clackamas Review

A few notes about what's included in the coaches' email. If you want to participate in the Tailgate party you'll find information on what you may bring and how to get tickets in the wrestling block for the football game that follows the tailgate.

The Pledge for Pins Campaign is an important fundraiser for the wrestling program. A link to the pledge form is included below.

The schedule for Open Tournaments can be found by following a link at the end. These are chances for all the wrestlers to participate, especially those that are not starters or are red-shirting. Parents, you may want to make note of these dates and locations. For fans, if you see a tournament in your area, you may want to attend to support wrestling and any Beavers who may be there.

There is a link to the regular schedule, but it does not appear to work. It goes to the Open Tournament Schedule.  I have been told that several dates have changed since they were posted elsewhere. The problem is the Pac-12 television schedule causes some dates and times to be moved to fit in.
