Beavers #25, Joe Radio interviews, ASU on 1/30

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

I am a few weeks behind in emailing, but hope you’ve been faithfully following this team. The Beavers are on a roll! As of today, they are #25 on the NWCA Div I Coaches Poll.

Backing up to January 14th-- the new competition mat, supported by donations from many of you, finally debuted in Gill. The cheerleaders, pep band and Benny wearing a singlet helped us cheer on the team to a shut out with Little Rock.  The tide could have changed at 174 when Triston Wills was awarded the fall vs Mateo Olmos. However, Coach P threw the Resilite block for video review, revealing that Little Rock locked hands, so no pin. Many of us fans in the stands missed the locking hands so kudos to Coach. The match resumed with 50 seconds remaining in the 3rd with a score of Olmos leading, 5-4. Olmos made an escape and had another takedown to secure the win. Trey Munoz racked up the points for a TF with 2+ min of riding time. Gas Tank Gary took it to double OT before winning 11-6. In the end, his opponent Josiah Hill was completely worn out and could barely stand.

After the meet, we met in the LaSells Stewart Center to eat, drink and visit. It was a smaller group but lots of good conversation. Thank you to Pac-12 Network announcer Ken Chertow for joining us as he has for years. I loved the intergenerational camaraderie – so nice to see guys on the team chatting with the great Jess Lewis. Brandon Kaylor kicked things off in his usual entertaining style. Kodiak Stephens shared a few words about his time at the Olympic Training Center. Lane Stigall earned the highest GPA and is moving forward with his plans to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Coach P’s birthday last Friday was celebrated on the road with a 30-15 win over Northern Colorado. And the weekend capped off on Saturday defeating Wyoming, 22-12.

This Sunday, Jan 30, the Beavs face a tough opponent, ASU at 1pm. The Sun Devils had recent losses to Pittsburgh and Princeton, a 26-15 win at Bakersfield and a recent narrow win over Cal Poly. A Beaver win is possible.

Little Rock - Fri 1/14 and new venue for social

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

We finally have our second home meet of the season in Gill this Friday, 1/14 at 7pm!  For those who can’t be there in person, it will be aired on the Pac-12 Network.

Match notes vs Little Rock:

https://osubeavers.com/news/2022/1/12/wrestling-returns-home-versus-little-rock-friday.aspx

Following the meet, we will have a social with appetizers in the lobby of the Lasells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St, Corvallis. This is a short walk from Gill -- across 26th and just past the Alumni Center. Due to the rise in catering costs at Reser, our volunteer group checked out a few other options and in the end, we felt this was our best value. (It is still expensive.) John Kowalewski did a great job checking them out in person and negotiating! Scott Lewis is covering the cost of a bartender and liquor license, so beer will be available for sale.  Please sign up for the Takedown Team if you have not already done so, as we will be checking names at the door.  All are invited to the social, but it is free to attend if you’ve joined the Takedown Team. The registration link is at the bottom of this email.

Another thank you to the Beaver volunteers who coordinated the social following the UVU meet in Nampa, ID. Proceeds from the door prizes raised $860 for The Dam Regional Training Center! Sounds like the drive back was very treacherous and we’re glad you all made it safely.

Thanks to Craig Scharer for the below article about Beaver alum Monte Truste who wrestled under Joe Wells in the early 1990’s.

Hope to see you on Friday!
