Deadline in a Week for Banquet Registration & Other News

Only one more week until your reservation form is due for the '2016 Wrestling Awards Banquet' sponsored by "The FALL". The Banquet will be held in The Club at Reser (third floor) on May 8, Sunday. Social hour 3:00-4:00, dinner at 4:00, followed by Awards program.  Reservations are due by April 29, next Friday.

We realize that May 8 is Mother's Day, but schedules would not allow any other day. So if you do not already have other plans, please join us to celebrate this group of young men and their coaches who brought home the fifth Pac-12 Team trophy in a row!

The three graduating seniors will be honored at the Banquet: Seth Thomas, Jared Reis and Jay Tovey. And don't forget Amar Dhesi, our All-American for this year!

If  you have not already done so, you may download and print the reservation form now. If you need a reminder of one of the Silent Auction items
, don't forget that great piece by John Kowalewski!

Now, some sad news shared by Coach Kevin Roberts:

With sadness, I wanted to pass along the news that Roger Weigel, 1971 NCAA Champion for Oregon State passed away peacefully last night, April 21, 2016. Roger finished 3rd for Oregon State at 126 lbs. in 1970, and was NCAA Champion for The Beavs in 1971 at 134 lbs. Roger was a loyal Beav alumni, having attended this years’ Pac 12 and NCAA Championships. Roger was a great supporter of the program and will be missed. We want to send our condolences to all of Roger’s family, friends and former teammates during this time. Memorial service information will be passed along soon.

Career Record:
Roger Weigel (1969-71) ........... (78-12-2) .859

Roger was a member of "The FALL". May he rest in Peace. Roger was also one of the Pac-12 Team of the Century, honored at this year's Pac-12's.  Roger is in the front row of the official photo, third from the right hand side. The story from Oregon State can be read here.

Another former Beaver wrestler in the news: Denys Overholser. Thanks to Ron Iwasaki for sending that story along!

Cal Poly is not the only Pac-12 school looking for a head coach. Boise State is also looking! In the meantime, their interim head coach is none other than Oregon State's Taylor Meeks! Thanks to Craig Scharer and John Dustin for sending me this story!

Hope to see many of you at the Banquet in May!

Wrestling News for mid-April

Plaque by J Kowalewski to be auctioned at Banquet
Time marches on. Just two weeks left to get your reservations in for the Oregon State Wrestling Awards Banquet for 2016. If you haven't done so yet, you can find the invitation and reservation form here. Send it in now so you won't have to worry about it later!

The Banquet will be held on Reser Stadium's Club Level, Sunday, May 8, 2016. Doors open at 3:00 pm, dinner will be at 4:00 pm followed by the Awards program. If you cannot attend, donations to help cover the costs are always appreciated by "The FALL"!

This banquet will also be your opportunity to bid on the magnificent art plaque by John Kowalewski celebrating the Beavers' string of Pac-12 victories. You don't want to miss out!

Even before the banquet, Oregon State recently picked up a couple more awards. Head Coach Jim Zalesky received the Pac-12 Coach of the Year Award and Heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi was named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year. Congratulations!!

You can read about these awards at the Oregon State site, and at the USA Wrestling site. Thanks to Craig Scharer for sending me the USA Wrestling story.

Another interesting article picked up by Craig features a former Beaver wrestler, John Horn. This article is from the Oregon Statesman-Journal. Thanks, Craig!

Other events coming up - the Oregon Chapter of the Wrestling  Hall of Fame is having their annual banquet and awards on April 30, 2016 at Embassy Suites-Portland in Washington Square. For more information, contact Len Kauffman.

Coming up a little later, the Annual Dale Thomas Classic Golf Tournament will be held on June 10, 2016, a Friday. Send in your application form to the Coaches Office. You can also be a sponsor for the tournament. This is a big fundraiser for wrestling at Oregon State, so please be generous!

Save the Dates - For Wrestling Banquet & Golf Tournament!

Please put these dates on your calendar and plan on joining in the fun:
2016 Wrestling Banquet - May 8, Sunday
2016 Dale Thomas Golf Classic - June 10, Friday

We've had a bit of trouble getting a date and a venue picked out for the Wrestling Banquet this year. The Club at Reser finally has been reserved for  May 8, which is actually Mother's Day. We hope that will not be too much of an inconvenience for anyone. Bring Mom along to the Banquet, she'll have a good time!

Don't forget, we always have some extra special items out for Silent Auction and door prizes at the Banquet. In fact, this year we have a one of a kind piece of art, made by former OSU wrestler, John Kowalewski, celebrating the Beavers five-in-a-row Pac-12 Championships! This is a photo of John's art. It has been updated to reflect this year's championship!

After we work out the last few details, I will send out the registration forms. That should be in a day or two.

Another important date for wrestling is June 10, a Friday, the date for the Dale Thomas Golf Classic Tournament. The Classic is an annual fund-raiser for the Oregon State Wrestling program. It raises funds for the Northwest Wrestling Regional Training Center. The NWRTC helps fund coaches to help with training.

To sign up to either play or to be a sponsor, fill out the forms and return them to the coaches office.

It's been a while since the last email update. In the meantime, Cal Poly has announced their hiring of a new Head Wrestling Coach, Jon Sioredas. Learn more about Mr Sioredas at this Cal Poly article.

Thank you to Craig Scharer, FALL Board member for sharing that news link with me!

One other bit of housekeeping news. Apparently the free email providers are moving to take more steps to protect people from spam. Gmail, which I use, is expected to join in this program. If and when this happens, these emails will be rejected and you won't get them. I will be studying the alternatives designed to get around this latest hurdle.

The fix apparently requires a new "domain" and a new email address. So if something comes that sounds like it is from me and looks like a different email address, it could well be me! My apologies for the lack of details, but I just found out about this.

Meanwhile, get signed up for the Golf Tournament, and put the Banquet date on your calendar! Wrestling season is over - it's time to say Congratulations and Thank you!
