Banquet Deadline - Sat. March 31! & News

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Coming to the Wrestling Banquet? We hope you can all join us for a fun evening - a great way to end the season. The deadline for getting in your reservations is almost here - this Saturday, March 31 is the deadline!! The Banquet will be held on April 14.

If you think your letter won't arrive by Saturday - please send me an email letting me know that it is on the way so that I can add you to the guest list. The Banquet is a sit-down dinner with limited seating. We usually add a few extra seats to fill out a table or two, but that's it. If you want to come, you need to send in your reservations!

If you can't come, but would like to help support the Banquet, you may also send  a donation to help cover the costs. The FALL Fan Club sponsors the Banquet and all of the team members are our guests. All donations are welcome, if you are coming or not.

Remember - there will be some great items for you to bid on in the Silent Auction! There will be the fantastic poster from the Olympic Greco match between Rulon Gardner and Alex Karellin and a Native American trophy plate donated by Gary Westford. You can see those items on The FALL's blogsite. I have also been told there will be a metal sculpture of a feather, hand made by Rick Willits - a metal scupltor and father of Hunter and Grant Willits. Thank you Gary and Rick! Can't wait to see those items!

Unfortunately, we do not have our on-line portal set up to sell Banquet tickets, so you'll have to mail in your check the old fashioned way.
Make check out to: The FALL Fan Club
Mail to: Michael Denison (Treasurer)
Address: Check the form for the address

Let's get a big group there to honor our All-Americans, NCAA Qualifiers, Pac-12 Champions and the whole team!

Speaking of honors - NCAA Qualifier Hunter Willits made the All-Freshman D-1 Team by The Open Mat. Hunter was third team at 157. You can read the article at The Open Mat for more details. Congratulations, Hunter! Thanks to Craig Scharer for sending me that link!

One other bit of sad news that many of you are probably already aware of - Steve Woods, an alumnus of the Oregon State Wrestling program and member of the Oregon Wrestling Hall of Fame, passed away on Monday, March 23.

Steve’s service will be Saturday, April 14th at 11:00 am in Estacada.  The service will be in the Jr. High Auditorium followed by a reception in the High School Commons. "Woody" as he was affectionately known by his friends, was a great story teller and even wrote his own book, "Sorta Tough".

If you'd like to know more about what Steve Woods was like, this is a past article about him - written when he was about to be inducted into the Oregon HOF. The article is at the Portland Tribune.

Steve will be missed. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his wife Betty and their whole family.

Thanks to Ron & Jana Iwasaki for providing the details of Steve's  memorial service.

Don't forget - send in your reservations for the Banquet by this Saturday!

Oregon State Wrestling  Fans,

Session Five opened Saturday morning. Also known as "The medal Round", it determines who receives third through eighth place as All-American.

If you've heard Coach Jim Zalesky say - "it's all about wrestling on Saturday" ... that's what he's talking  about. You are either in the finals Saturday evening  or you received All-American honors in the morning.

Both Ronnie Bresser and Amar Dhesi had "survived" the brackets and made it to Saturday morning.

Dhesi had to wrestle first to determine whether he would wrestle for 3rd-4th or drop down to the 5th-6th place match.

Photo 2
Photos 1-5 are from Amar's re-match with Mike Hughes of Hofstra. Amar had pinned Hughes in the Round of 16.

This time it was a little closer, but Amar won by 3-1 decision. He would go for third.

Meanwhile, Ronnie Bresser's loss Friday evening put him into the 7th-8th place match. When Ronnie came to the mat Saturday morning, he discovered that his opponent,  Zeke Moisey, had been injured and chose to withdraw by Medical Forfeit. Ronnie's tournament run was over. He would have his hand raised and go home with 7th place All-American honors. Congratulations!!

That left one more match - Amar Dhesi faced the number four seeded Jacob Kasper of Duke. Dhesi would need another upset to claim third place.

Dhesi didn't leave that question out there very long. He won by fall in 1:46! Congratulations! Amar Dhesi - Third Place All-American!

NCAA's - The Conclusion

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

This is the point in every season that I write ..... the lights are dimmed, the crowd is gone and the cleaning crew has moved in. The biggest tournament of the year is over. The matches have been entered in the record books, the winners celebrate and the losers go home to figure out how to do better next year.

The finals this evening were exciting and the team race was close between the top two teams. Penn State finally secured the deal in the 184 pound match while the biggest showdown occurred at heavyweight between Kyle Snyder and Adam Coon. Snyder won.

Oregon State finished in 21st with 26 points and two All-Americans - Ronnie Bresser and Amar Dhesi. Congratulations to Ronnie, Amar, Head Coach Jim Zalesky and his staff and the whole team!

I have quite a few more photos from Michael Denison from the tournament to post on the Blog site, don't forget to check for those. Some are already up.

If you want to look back over the records, check FloWrestling or TrackWrestling. More details can be found at the osubeavers site. A big thank you to Evan Hooper for his coverage on Twitter! He was working several sports for Oregon State this weekend, but still did a great job for us.

Reminder - the Wrestling Awards Banquet is coming up on Saturday, April 14! We have a lot to celebrate, our two All-Americans, our four NCAA qualifiers, our three Pac-12 Champions and the team's second place finish at the Pac-12's! Download the Banquet invitation and reservation form - on the right side, under "Links" - fill it out and send it in now before you forget.

Dhesi Third - Bresser 7th!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Amar's 3rd place fall - by Jana Iwasaki

Amar Dhesi just put an exclamation point on his run at the NCAA's with a first period fall over #4 seed Jacob kasper of Duke in the third place match at heavyweight. Amar was leading the match 4-1 at the time of the fall. Congratulations, Amar! Third Place - All-American!

A little earlier in the day Ronnie Bresser finished up his run through the NCAA brackets as well. All he had to do was show up to claim his victory - a  medical forfeit over Zeke Moisey of UVU. Ronnie picks up the 7th place medal for All-American! Congratulations, Ronnie!

That makes Amar's second All-American title and Ronnie's first. Amar also had two falls during the tournament. Way to go, guys!!

Team scores will still change tonight with the finals round, starting at 5:00 pm (Pacific) on ESPN. Oregon State looks like they will hold on to 21st place with 26 points. No one below them can pass them. If some of the ties above are broken that might affect the placement, not sure how that works. To see the updated brackets and team scores - check the FloWrestling  site. You can also find brackets and scores at TrackWrestling.
