Note From the Coaches' Corner - October 27

The most recent note from the Oregon State Wrestling Coaches:

Wrestling fans-

We hope everyone is having a great fall and getting ready for another wrestling season. We have completed our pre-season training phase and are now prepping for the 2016-2017 season that is just around the corner. Here are some upcoming dates and events to be aware of:

This Saturday, October 29th- open practice for the fans, supporters and families. Practice starts at 4:30 in The Dale Thomas Wrestling Room in The SPC.

We are just one week from The Black and Orange Intrasquad at Gill Coliseum. You can see many of the Beavs in action, next Thursday- November 3rd at 7 PM.

On Sunday, November 6th- Oregon State will have a contingent  of athletes compete at The Mike Clock Open at Pacific University. We should have at least 20 or so wrestlers competing.

The Beavers kick off the dual season on November 12th in Boone, North Carolina as we take on Appalachian State and Duke University.

We host our annual Making a Difference Tournament for youth wrestlers through High School on November 13th. Registration is now available at www.trackwrestling.com. This has been a great event for kids from all over the Northwest and we appreciate the support. We are excited once again to be hosting at OSU!

Our home opener will be November 20th against The University of Michigan. Michigan enters the season with a pre-season ranking of #8, while the Beavers are #16.  It should be a great way to kick off the home schedule.

Season Tickets are now on sale at the OSU Ticket Office. Call 541-737-2050 to make your order. The home schedule this year includes Michigan, Stanford, ASU, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield. The Pac 12 Championships this year will be February 26th at Stanford. Make plans to be a part of the always great Oregon State contingent of fans. OSU will once again have our clock of tickets at the NCAA Championships as well. They will be available at a later date through the ticket office, please let me know if you are interested in being a part of the OSU block.

Oregon State returns seven wrestlers with previous NCAA experience. The team starts the season with six wrestlers in the national rankings and plenty to prove. We are looking to do some great things this year and have a good mix of veterans and youngsters that are eager to step up to the challenges ahead. We have two new staff members in former OSU All-American Taylor Meeks, as well as 3x NCAA All-American Ian Miller, formerly of Kent State University.

Have a great fall and we look forward to seeing many of you in a wrestling arena very soon.

Open Practice This Saturday - Season Tickets, Etc.

Wrestlers running at end of practice.
If you will be attending the football game on Saturday, versus WSU at 7:45 pm, the Wrestlers will be introduced and honored at half-time for their Pac-12 Championship last season. If you come a little earlier, the wrestlers will be going through their regular workout.

The team will have an Open Practice in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room starting at 4:30 pm and all are welcome to come in and watch. There is a small bleacher section in the back corner of the room, a couch on one end and room along the edges to sit or stand. Practice lasts about an hour and a half, so you will have time after practice to tailgate with friends or go out to dinner before the game.

Wrestling Season Tickets are now on sale from the Oregon State Ticket Office. You can purchase them in Gill if you are on campus during the work week. You can also buy them online or by phone: 1-800-GO BEAVS. Season tickets are for all 5 home meets. Cost is $35 for adult, $25 for youth or senior (62+). If you are ordering online or by phone, there is a $10 order charge.

You still have time to join "The FALL" for the 2016-17 season and get in on the mailing of member ID badges before the season starts. You can sign up on-line or by downloading and mailing in your application. If you do it by mail, please let me know by email right away, so that I can enter your names on the list on time!

Deadline For FALL Membership Applications & More Wrestling News

FALL Board meeting
The deadline for your application for membership in "The FALL" for the 2016-17 season is tomorrow - Friday, October 21. Payment is quickest and easiest through our online payment portal. You can also do it by mailing in your payment and application.

Remember you can also make donations or buy merchandise from "The FALL" at the portal. Once you are there, just scroll down the page below the membership option buttons to see what else is available. You can always find a link to the portal on the right side of this page under "Links".

Why so early when the home opener is still a month away? Well, if we can get the bulk of the memberships in right now, it gives the FALL Board members time to print out the ID badges and get them all put together and mail them out to you in advance of the season. It saves a lot of work and time waiting in lines either before the meets in the lobby of Gill, or at the Socials in Reser following the meets.

We can always accept applications later, but it is far less efficient. This year we want to try mailing the ID badges out before the home schedule starts. You can then bring your badges along with you. If you need a new lanyard, just present your ID badge and a Board member can help you. 2016-17 lapel pins are still in process so will not be available until the New Year. They will be handed out later to members.

Intermat has produced their Pre-season rankings. You will find that story at osubeavers.com. That article also covers all of the opening events for the Beavers. Check it out.

An interesting article has come out on-line about Clackamas, a local powerhouse in wrestling at the local Community College level. Thanks to Craig Scharer for bringing that article to my attention!

The new roster is up at osubeavers.com. So if you'd like to see the new faces on the wrestling team, they are now up! The bio's for the new guys have not been completed yet. That will be coming soon.

As stated in an earlier email, Amar Dhesi, OSU's heavyweight, will be traveling to Corum, Turkey, to compete in freestyle wrestling at the University World Games this weekend. Good luck to Amar! Bring home some gold!

Don't forget to sign up for "The FALL" - be ready for the wrestling season!!

The weather, which turned out to be not all that bad in the Corvallis area, did not deter everyone from the Practice and the Tailgate Party! The official season has begun, so the coaches were in charge and the intensity has been turned up a few notches in the Practice Room.

Tidbit for the day - Heavyweight Amar Dhesi  will be heading to Turkey for the University World's October 25-30 to compete in freestyle wrestling. By the looks of the YouTube video about the event it should be quite an experience in culture as well wrestling. Enjoy and Good Luck to Mr. Dhesi!

Fans, parents, wrestlers and coaching staff were treated to a delicious barbecue and selection of tailgate food following the practice. One of the marching band units dropped by to serenade the tailgaters. Thanks to Richard Rockwell, Hans's dad, for the photo at the top of the page! The other snapshots were taken by yours truly.

While you are at The FALL's website, be sure to Bookmark that page. That way if you lose one of your emails, you will be able to always find it there. Links to  pertinent information can be found on the righthand side of that page.

Another reason to Bookmark The FALL's website, it seems that some email providers are flagging certain group emails as spam. If you have not heard from me in a while, check your spam folder, then check the website to see what you may have missed. If you are getting wrestling email in your spam folder, mark it as "not spam" so that it will go through in the future.

Don't forget - it's time to get your application in for FALL membership for 2016-17! We are running a little late this year, the deadline is this Friday, October 21.

New this year, our payment portal:
https://squareup.com/store/the-fall-fanclub/ You can pay your dues, make a donation and buy merchandise, all at the portal. To find all these options, simply scroll down the page once you are there. You can add a message when making the payment in the "Additional Note to Merchant" box. Be sure to use that box to list all names of members if it is more than a single membership.

If you prefer the old fashioned method of paper and US mail, you can download the letter of invitation and application form. Mail in the form and your check to our Treasurer, Brandon Perkins.

If you wish to buy season tickets for wrestling, those must be purchased from the Oregon State Ticket Office, either in person or on-line. They should be out soon, but are not yet available.

Time to Join "The FALL" For 2016-17!

The time has come again - and in fact we are a little late this year - to send out the application for membership in "The FALL", the Official Fan Club of Oregon State Wrestling!!

We do have a new way for you to join. This year we have an on-line version where you can use your credit card and do it all on-line! All you have to do is to go to our payment portal: https://squareup.com/store/the-fall-fanclub/
This link is also listed on the right side of this page under"Links".

The mechanism for payment is handled by Square. This method should save a lot of paperwork for Board members and make it easier to track membership. I have used it and it works well. I was notified by email almost instantly that I had paid my dues.

For those who do not like to shop online, we still have the old fashioned method, the letter of invitation and application form to download, print, fill out and mail to Brandon Perkins, our Treasurer. You can access the form from this email. You can also access it from a link on right side of this page, under "Links".

We would really like to have the applications in by the deadline of Oct 21. That gives the Board time to put together membership packets at the end of October. Your ID badges will then be mailed to you. As usual we will always accept late comers, but that is not as efficient.

Don't forget - Parent Fan Tailgate Party after open practice tomorrow.
When: Practice starts at 9:30, the tailgater about 11:00, Saturday Oct 15.
Where: just outside the entrance to the Wrestling section of the Sports Performance Facility. The SPF is located immediately west of Gill Coliseum.
What: For those who wish to participate in the Tailgater, there will be something on the grill - meat and potatoes, yum!
Otherwise, if your last name begins with:
A-M - bring salads/fruit/veggies
N-Z - bring desserts/other side dish.
Also, please bring your own beverages, everything else will be provided.
Hope you can come, it is always a lot of fun! If you are attending the football game, you will have time, kick-off is at 1:00.

Be warned - there are weather advisories for the Valley for Saturday for heavy rain and high wind. The latest I heard was the winds are predicted to arrive later in the afternoon, around the end of the football game, so we may escape the worst of it.

Any questions? Just ask!

Open Practice & Tailgater This Saturday - Oct 15!!

The official opening of wrestling season was Monday, October 10, so it is underway! With that, we have the first  official Open Practice this coming Saturday, October 15, at 9:30am.

After an hour and a half of practice, around 11:00, all are invited to the Parent/Fan Tailgate Party just outside the entrance to the Wrestling section of the Sports Performance Facility. The SPF is located immediately west of Gill Coliseum.

For those who wish to participate in the Tailgater, there will be something on the grill - meat and potatoes, yum! - that will be prepared for you. Otherwise, if your last name begins with:
A-M - bring salads/fruit/veggies
N-Z - bring desserts/other side dish.
Also, please bring your own beverages and everything else will be provided.
Hope you can come, it is always a lot of fun! If you are attending the football game, you will have time, kick-off is at 1:00.

One note, the weather report for Saturday calls for lots of rain and wind, so it could be a bit stormy. There is some cover for non-diehard tailgaters, as there are both upstairs and downstairs lobbies to the Wrestling Room, as well as a roof covering the area just outside the door.

If you have not been following the news at osubeavers.com a couple of new articles have gone up recently. One is about the Pac-12 television schedule with the Beavs having four of their home meets on the TV schedule. The second article informs you about which six Beavers made it into the preseason rankings!   (Hint - they are: Bresser, Crawford, Delgado, Dhesi, Griego and Palmer!) Way to go, guys!!

Looking ahead in the schedule, the team will be introduced and honored at the Homecoming football game halftime for their 5th straight Pac-12 victory in the 2015-16 season. That is set for October 29. Time is still TBA.

The Intrasquad meet will be Nov 3 at 7:00 pm in Gill Coliseum. Next up the entire team travels up to Forest Grove for the Mike Clock Open  all day at Pacific University. The opening of the regular dual meet season will be back east in North Carolina, November 12. See the schedule for details. The annual Joe Wells Classic with Michigan is the home opener on November 20, mark that date on your calendar!

Finally, a look back at last weekend. Thanks to FALL Board member and Parent Rep, Andrea Tobin (Izaak's Mom) who shared a few photos from the practice session last Saturday. Her photos are below.

Hope many of you can make it to the tailgater this weekend!

Open Practices - This Saturday and Next Saturday!

Wrestling Practice - Dale Thomas Wrestling Room
Just a quick update to let you know there will be another Open Practice this coming Saturday, Oct 8, in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room on the Oregon State campus. Start time will be 3:00. Practice lasts about an hour and a half. Kick-off for the football game is 6:00.

Wrestling Season does not start until Oct 10 by NCAA regulations. This practice again will be just for the wrestlers to tune themselves up. The coaches will step in to run things on Monday, October 10. It is still a good opportunity to check out the new faces on the team, watch some scrambles and visit with other fans and the coaching staff.

So far the team roster on-line as not been updated, so we'll hope the guys write their names on the back of their shirts so we can tell who they are!

Saturday, October 15 will be the last Open Practice before the Intrasquad. Oct 15 will also be the date of the Wrestling Parent/Fan Tailgater. The tailgate party takes place after the end of practice. The set-up is outside the Wrestling entrance to the Practice Facility. Time is TBA, since it depends on the start time of the football game. More information on how to participate will be out later.

Oct 29 will be Homecoming for Oregon State. The Wrestling Team will be honored for their 2016 Pac-12 title (their fifth in a row!!) at half-time of the football game.

Next up for Wrestling will be the Intrasquad, Thursday Nov 3 at 7 pm in Gill Coliseum. Be there to see who will man the first string this year.

Opening home action will be Nov 20, Sunday when OSU hosts the second Annual Joe Wells Classic with Michigan at 12 noon. Anyone looking forward to a rematch between heavyweights Amar Dhesi and Adam Coon will have to wait until next year. Mr Coon is taking a redshirt season after a pre-season injury, at least that's what I heard through the grapevine.
