Beavers Corner the Bears!

Benny enjoys the match with Larry Bielenberg & buddy

The Oregon State Beavers wrestling team gave a highly entertaining performance for the home crowd this afternoon, winning 35-6! The Beavers won 8 out of 10 weight classes.

Ronnie Bresser started things off at 125 with a third period Tech Fall, always a crowd pleaser! Joey Palmer followed that up with a fall in the second period. Who doesn't love that?! Jack Hathaway and Joey Delgado added more points to the score.

UNC finally got a win when Abe Rodriguez lost another close one at 157, 2-3. Seth Thomas was up next, digging himself out of a huge hole and nearly turning it into a major or a fall, getting the fans on their feet!

Tyler Chay added a major, Corey Griego came up with a Tech Fall in the third period. Cody Crawford faced a rematch with an opponent he lost to in Las Vegas's Cliff Keen, but was unable to turn the tables.

Oregon State fans had one last reason for a big celebration when Amar Dhesi pinned his opponent in the first period.

Congratulations to all the match winners, Bresser, Palmer, Hathaway, Delgado, Thomas, Chay, Griego and Dhesi!! And Congratulations to the entire team for their efforts today!

According to the Oregon State story, the crowd was 848. Come on folks, we have to get more people next time. We need to get the numbers back up into the thousands!

To get a couple of other looks at the dual today, read the article at UNC and the one at Oregon Live by Scott Nelson.

Fans gather in The Loge for Social

After the meet, fans gathered in The Loge in Reser Stadium for a Social where a selection of meatballs and cookies were served. Reynold Gardner, FALL Board member, interviewed Joey Palmer and a couple of his regular workout partners, Ronnie Stevens and Ronnie Bresser.

Fall Club member Len Kauffman gave a short talk inviting all to the Oregon Chapter of the Hall of Fame banquet - April 30, 2016. Len mentioned that several people will be honored, but the most outstanding were Oregon State former wrestler Denys Overholser who developed the Stealth technology for the F-117A (stealth bomber) and Dr Mike Reuter, former coach at the U of O, who will receive the Medal of Courage. For reservations or questions, contact Jim Pond: jwpond1970@comcast.net, or order online at or-nwhof.ticketleap.com

The fans also heard from Coach Zalesky on how the team is doing, looking toward the last part of the season. The Social concluded with the drawing for doorprizes and closing of Silent Auction items.
Fans in line for meatballs and cookies!

Don't forget, we have some interesting Silent Auction items still to come. There will be one more of the specially engraved hydroflasks that was auctioned off today - congratulations to Annete Chay, the winner! We will have a complete set of all 5 of the lapel pins designed for "The FALL". The first of the pins, from 2011-2012 is no longer for purchase individually as we only have 13 left, and they are all in sets. Then there is that unique plaque designed and made by FALL member John Kowalewski.
Plaque made by John Kowalewski
John gave this statement about his work:

This plaque was made to raise money to support the Beaver Wrestling Program.
The plaque is made of Myrtlewood purchased on the Oregon Coast.
The Beaver head is solid bronze and the picture is of the 2015 Pac 12 Championship team and coaches with autographs by the coaches.

The Beavers have a big week ahead of them - a road trip to California with 3 meets at the end of the week. They take on Stanford on Thursday at 6:30, Cal Poly on Friday at 7 pm and Bakersfield on Saturday at 7 pm.

The weekend will finish off with the last of the Open Tournaments - the California Collegiate at San Francisco State on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Sun Devils Trap Beavers

The Beavers won the first, the last and one in the middle. Match winners were Ronnie Bresser at 125, Seth Thomas at 165 and Amar Dhesi at 285. Congratulations to all!

Bresser's match was a nailbiter, winning 2-1 with riding time. Joey Palmer and Jack Hathaway had very close matches. Abraham Rodriguez kept scrambling, but could never quite get ahead.

Starting out after the television half time break, Seth Thomas worked hard for the fall. It appeared that he had it, but apparently the ref did not see it that way. Tyler Chay's match was close until the third period.

At 184, Corey Griego faced ASU's highest ranked wrestler, #6 Blake Stauffer. Corey scored the first takedown and kept it close, but couldn't get the takedown at the end to force OT, losing 4-6.

At heavyweight, Amar Dhesi seemed determined to erase his close loss to Tanner Hall at Midlands. Amar earned OSU's only bonus point this evening, winning by major, 12-4. Way to go, Amar!!

The Beavers return home to Gill for a Sunday meet with University of Northern Colorado at 2:00 pm. UNC defeated Boise State tonight 22-15. That meet was live-streamed, but the connection was not good and hung up a lot. So if you are counting on watching the meet between OSU and UNC by their live-stream, it may not work well. (Hint - it would be much better to be there in person!)

UNC is not ranked, but they have a good team, so we need another good, loud crowd to cheer the Beavers on to victory on Sunday! Don't forget, "The FALL" is sponsoring a Social in the Loge in Reser after the meet.

For more details on today's meet, check out the article at OSU's website. For the other view, ASU has this article.

Hope to see you all on Sunday in Gill!

Correction - ASU Dual 5 PM MST - 4 PM PST

The Dual between OSU and ASU begins at 5:00 MST which is 4 PST on Friday, Jan 29. Sorry, I made an error.

In the meantime, ASU has written up an article specifically about the meet, which for them will be their senior night. That article can be found here.

Northern Colorado has also posted a new article. In that article you can find links to both livestreaming or live stats for both of their road meets, the one on the 29th with Boise and the Sunday Jan. 31 dual at Gill with the Beavers.

So you can watch the Beavers on the Pac-12 network/channel at 5 MST or 4 PST, then scout out the Sunday competition by watching the Boise/No Colorado meet on livestream at 7 MST, 6 PST.
For all the other information on the Beavers' weekend, please refer back to the previous email, or read it on "The FALL"'s blog.

Wrestling at ASU on Friday - in Gill on Sunday!

The Beavers will split this coming weekend between travel and home. They start on the road with a Friday meet with ASU. On Sunday they are back home in Gill Coliseum to defend the home turf. Northern Colorado will be the Sunday opponent.

Friday, Jan. 29, at 5:00 Mountain Time the Beavs take on the Sun Devils in Wells Fargo Arena. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 network. Remember, since we are in Standard Time, they are an hour ahead of Pacific Time. So if you are watching out here on television, the meet will begin at 4 pm PST. (Corrected since first publishing.)

For more reading on the Friday meet, you can find articles at OSU and ASU. The ASU article is focused on their recent rankings.

On Sunday, Jan. 31, the Beavs will be back home in Gill. Wrestling begins at 2:00 pm PST as Oregon State hosts the Northern Colorado Golden Bears.

"The FALL" Fan Club will again host a Social in Reser's Loge - second floor - following the meet. Representatives from the Board will be out front  in Gill to hand out FALL member packets before the meet and at the door to the Social. Don't remember if you have paid your dues for this year? Check the list. Still need to fill out the form for this year? You can download the application form.

All you meatball fans are in for a treat. The menu for this Social includes meatballs and a selection of cookies. You will now be able to compare meatballs between the old caterer and the new.

Northern Colorado will stop at Boise for a meet on Friday, Jan. 29, 7 pm MT, before coming to Corvallis on Sunday. Last week they picked up a win over the Cal Poly Mustangs. You can read more about that in their article.

Hope to see many of you in Gill on Sunday!

Boxer Results, Pac-12 Hotel & Other News

It's a relatively quiet week in Oregon State Wrestling news, as the Beavers do not have any meets this week. There are a few items to bring to your attention.

A group of wrestlers will likely be participating in the CCC Open Tournament this Sunday, Jan. 24. The tournament will be held in Oregon City at Clackamas Community College, Randall Hall, 19600 Mollala Ave., Oregon City, OR 97045.
Google Map - for anyone needing directions. Live stats will be available through TrackWrestling. Search on Clackamas Open when you are at TrackWrestling.

News from last Sunday, one Beaver did enter the Boxer Open in Forest Grove. Joseph DeMatteo wrestled at 157. His results, from TrackWrestling:

Boxer Open Results for Oregon State University
College 157 - Joseph DeMatteo's place is unknown and has scored 3.00 team points.
Champ. Round 1 - Joseph DeMatteo (Oregon State University) received a bye () (Bye)
Champ. Round 2 - Joseph DeMatteo (Oregon State University) won by decision over Jerdon Helgeson (Washington State University ) (Dec 7-5)
Quarterfinal - Joseph DeMatteo (Oregon State University) won by decision over Angel Aquilar (Unattached) (Dec 7-6)
Semifinal - Matthew Iwicki (University of Washington) won by decision over Joseph DeMatteo (Oregon State University) (Dec 6-0)
Cons. Semi - Josh Smith (Unattached) won by decision over Joseph DeMatteo (Oregon State University) (Dec 8-3)

I believe this is the best DeMatteo has done so far in tournaments. A walk-on last year, it's always great to see improvement. Way to go, Joseph! An observation - Joseph wrestled one athlete from Washington State University and one from University of Washington. Both UW and WSU have Club teams now, a step toward reinstating wrestling. More power to them! It would be great to have a real (not just the 6 we have now) Pac-12 again in wrestling!!

For those making plans to attend the Pac-12's at host ASU, "The FALL" has reserved a block of rooms at a hotel near the ASU campus. This flier will give you all the info you need for making a reservation there. A big Thank You to Club member Gerry Mahoney for recommending this hotel to the Board!

Another reminder about the Pledge For Pins fund drive. This is a pledge for all the pins that the team gets this season. It includes all tournaments and all team members. The money goes to support the wrestling program. Every dollar helps!

One of the fund raising efforts of "The FALL" is our Silent Auction at Socials and the Banquet. We have received a donation of one of those unique, don't want to miss out items from Club member John Kowalewski. It is a beautiful plaque, the artwork was all done by John. You can see a picture of it here.

I asked John for some information on the piece. Here is his statement:

This plaque was made to raise money to support the Beaver Wrestling Program.
The plaque is made of Myrtlewood purchased on the Oregon Coast.
The Beaver head is solid bronze and the pictures are of the 2015 Pac 12 Championship team and coaches with autographs by the coaches.

The plaque will be up for auction most likely at the banquet at the end of the season. So be thinking of a place where you'd like to see this hanging in your trophy case, den or office. Then make sure you are there to bid! Many thanks, John!

Even though the Beavers haven't been wrestling this week, the people who calculate the rankings have been working. As a team, the Beavers edged up a bit and a few more individuals were included. Oregon State has articles for both the team rankings and individual rankings.

Best of luck to all the Beavers who will be at the Clackamas Open!

Beavers Rope the Cowboys 32-7!

The same confident Oregon State team that took care of business at Central Michigan last week took to the mat in front of their home crowd in Gill this afternoon, dispatching the Wyoming Cowboys 32-7!

Starting off the meet at 197, Cody Crawford gave the crowd something to cheer about with a fall in the second period. Amar Dhesi, #10, followed up with a 13-6 win over his #19 ranked opponent.

Going back to the beginning of the weight classes, Ronnie Bresser, #6 at 125, won a major over #15. Joey Palmer, #20 at 133, also won by major. At 141 Wyoming had #14 Bryce Meredith. Jared Reis filled in for Jack Hathaway and put in a scrappy performance, but came up short, losing by major 4-12.

At 149, Joey Delgado put the wins back in the Oregon State column with an 8-5 decision. At 157 Abraham Rodriguez was locked in a very close battle. Going into the tie-breaker round of overtime, Rodriguez held Colgan down for the 30 seconds, then in his turn, escaped with about 15 seconds to go. The crowd was celebrating, perhaps forgetting that the time was not over. A mad scramble ensued, the buzzer sounded and the crowd was going wild until the ref held up a "2 points green" signal, deciding that there was a take down in those last seconds. That gave Wyoming their last 3 points of the day.

Next up, Seth Thomas at 165. Seth was behind 0-6 before he turned the tables and started his climb with back points of his own. He shut the match down with a fall at the very end of the second period.

Tyler Chay added a victory of his own at 174 with a 7-2 decision. Corey Griego added the last team points with his 5-0 decision at 184 for the 32-7 victory.

Congratulations to the whole team and coaching staff! For more details, read Oregon State's article. To read Wyomings' take, check their article.

We had a good turnout at the Social following the meet. The menu today was a baked potato bar and some delicious cookies.  Reynold Gardner interviewed Cody Crawford, Coach Z gave a short talk and some great doorprizes were won. Coach Steiner talked a little bit about the Pledge for Pins drive, encouraging more people to participate.

The Pledge for Pins is an important fund raiser for the program, making it possible to afford extra coaching positions, all of which will add to the excellence of Oregon State Wrestling. To participate, fill out the Pledge for Pins and mail it in to the Coaches' Office. You will find the address on the form.

Sunday, January 17, the Boxer Open will be held at Pacific University in Forest Grove. No Oregon State wrestlers are listed as participants. It's possible that no Beavers will enter. I understand it is more likely that a large group will enter the Clackamas Open next Sunday, January 24.

The Beavers have a break to rest up before they make the push to the season finale. They open their Pac-12 schedule at ASU on Jan. 29, a Friday. That meet will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The Beavs return home to Gill on Jan. 31, Sunday for a 2:00 pm dual with Northern Colorado.

Go Beavs!

Beavers Host Cowboys in Gill on Saturday!

Be there in Gill Coliseum for the first of two home meets in January for the Oregon State Beavers, as they host the Wyoming Cowboys at noon, Saturday, Jan. 16.

Wyoming has proven to be a formidable foe for the Beavers, so we need a good crowd on hand to support our team!

Some of the FALL Board will be on hand out in the lobby
before the meet to hand out FALL membership packets. They will be there until about 11:50 am. They can also answer any questions you have about "The FALL" Fan Club and sign up new members as well. If you haven't joined yet, fill out the application form and bring it along with you.

A Social will be held on level two of Reser Stadium in the Loge following the end of the meet. Admission is free for Club members, $5 each/$20 for a family for non-members. There will be some appetizers, door prizes. silent auction items and a short program. Come and mingle with friends, fans, wrestlers, coaches and staff.

For more information on the meet, read the article by OSU. For those who cannot be here to cheer for the Beavs, you can watch on Pac-12 television. You can find the link to the television on the OSU schedule page.

To see the view from Wyoming's side, read the Wyoming article. They will be picking up two duals on their trip out west, stopping in Corvallis and then at Boise. Their article contains links at the top of that page to Trackwrestling for live stats for both their meets and also to video for both.

Salem's newspaper, the Statesman Journal, recently ran an article on Ronnie Bresser, OSU's highly ranked 125. The article contains a video interview as well.

If you'd like a little more wrestling before the weekend is over, Pacific University in Forest Grove will be hosting an open tournament, the Boxer Open, in Stoller Center. Wrestling begins at 10 am, Sunday, Jan 17. You can follow the action on TrackWrestling. This is one of the tournaments available to all the members of the Beaver squad. Participation depends on their individual schedules.

Hope to see many of you this Saturday!

New Wrestling Program & News This Week

For anyone relying on an old schedule, the start time for the dual with Wyoming on Saturday is high noon, just think of it as the shoot out at the OK corral. An earlier schedule had the start time at 1:30, which has been changed to noon. Make sure you get there in time! We need lots of fans in the stands to make a lot of noise and energize our team! If you cannot come, the meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Network

Don't forget, "The FALL" will be hosting a Social after the meet in The Loge (level 2) in Reser Stadium. All are welcome; free for all FALL Club members, $5/ea for non-members.

For anyone wanting to do a little scouting ahead of time, check out the roster and stats for the Wyoming Cowboys. Thank you to Don Hoskins, "FALL" Club member, for sending that roster file for me to share!

Big news for wrestling in the state of Oregon, another program has been re-instated at the college level! Eastern Oregon University (EOU) in LaGrande has announced they are not only re-instating their men's program, but they are adding a women's team as well! They will be in the NAIA, the same as Southern Oregon. Congratulations to EOU!

To learn more about the EOU announcement, see the article by EOU, and an article by Scott Nelson at OregonLive.

Thank you to John Dustin for sharing this news with me! John is not only a "FALL" Club member but one of the hard working members of the Restore College Wrestling Oregon movement.

Back to Oregon State Wrestling News. After their performance at Central Michigan, downing a #16 team, the Beavers are back in the team rankings. In individual rankings, Ronnie Bresser and Amar Dhesi stayed put near the top and Joey Palmer moved back into the top twenty. Congratulations to all! To read all the details and find the Pac-12 rankings for the Beavers, read the article at OSU's site.

There are three open tournaments left this season for competition for squad members and red-shirts. The next one of these is this coming Sunday, January 17 - the Boxer Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. It will be held in the same place as the Mike Clock Open which took place at the beginning of the season.

The other two open tournaments are the CCC Open at Clackamas in Oregon City, OR the next Sunday, Jan. 24, and the California Collegiate at San Fransisco State on Sunday, February 7. Attendance in these tournaments is not mandatory and depends on the schedule of each wrestler.

Where are they now?

Mick Dougharity is now wrestling for the Mountaineers at Western State Colorado University. Mick was on the Oregon State team the past few years. Best of luck, Mick!

Do you know where any former Beavers, wrestlers or coaches, are? Let me know and I will put news of them here.

Beavers Flatten Chippewas!

The Beavers took the score from their meet with Michigan and turned it on its head by the end of the meet this afternoon at Central Michigan, winning 26-9! Way to go Beavs!

Ronnie Bresser - 125, Joey Palmer - 133 and Seth Thomas - 165, all were repeat winners for the weekend. This afternoon they were joined by Jack Hathaway - 141, Corey Griego - 184, Cody Crawford - 197, and Amar Dhesi - 285, as match winners for Oregon State. Congratulations to all!

Joey Delgado, Abraham Rodriguez and Tyler Chay all had close losses to guys who were ranked #12. Tyler's match was very close, losing by just 2 points. Just a little more effort, guys, and you are right there!

The scariest news for Oregon State was that Jack Hathaway was injured by an illegal hold in his match, resulting in his win by disqualification. We sincerely hope that the injury is not severe.

Central Michigan had not lost a dual this year until they met the Beavers. In fact, they were ranked #16. Nice work, Beavers!

To read more details of the match, you will find articles at Oregon State's site and one from the opposition at Central Michigan's site.

The Beavers return home for a week of classes before hosting the Wyoming Cowboys at Gill Coliseum on Saturday, January 16, at noon. "The FALL" will be hosting a Social in the Loge following the meet.

The Wyoming meet will be televised by the Pac-12 network, but we hope many of you can be there to cheer on the Beavs. Wyoming is always a formidable foe.

Go Beavs!

Wrestling News This Week & Scouting Michigan Schools

Winter term has begun and wrestling is in full gear. The Beavers have two meets this week; both against very good teams back in Michigan.

But before we look ahead to this week, we have to take note of one news item from last week. OSU's 125 lb'er, Ronnie Bresser III won the Pac-12's Wrestler of the Week Award for his performance at the Midlands Tournament in Evansville, Illinois. Congratulations, Ronnie! This is the first time the Pac-12 has awarded a "Wrestler of the Week" honor, and Ronnie was the one to win it.

You can read more of the details in the article at the Oregon State site.

Thursday, Jan. 7, the Beavers face the University of Michigan Wolverines in the Cliff Keen Arena at 7 pm Eastern ST, or 4 pm Pacific. You can follow live stats on TrackWrestling or watch live video on BTN Plus. BTN Plus is by subscription. You can find links to both in the article at Michigan's site.

This meeting of the Beavers and the Wolverines will be the first annual Joe Wells Classic, honoring Joe Wells, who was Head Coach at Oregon State and an Assistant Coach at Michigan. You can read two articles about Joe at USA Wrestling.

On Saturday, Jan. 9, the Beavers head to Mt Pleasant, Michigan, for a meet with the Central Michigan Chippewas at 2pm, Eastern, 11 am Pacific. the meet will be held at the McGuirk Arena.  You can read about Central Michigan at their site:

The Central Michigan meet will be broadcast live on ESPN3 .

For the view from Oregon State and Coach Zalesky's thoughts,  read the article at the Oregon State site.

The Beavers are on the road this week, but next week they return to Gill for a meet with Wyoming at noon on Saturday, Jan. 16. "The FALL" will be hosting a Social after the meet in Reser Stadium in the Loge. Admission is free to FALL club members and $5/person for non-members.

If you can't remember if you have paid your dues yet, check our membership list. It is up to date as of Dec 19. Let me know if you have paid but your name is not there. If you would like to join, fill out the membership form and bring it along with you. You can find the form under "Links" on the right side of this page.

If you have not picked up your membership packet, FALL Board members will be on hand in Gill's lobby before the meet and at the Loge after to hand them out. Don't forget to bring your membership badge for free admission to the Social!

Troy Steiner

As you may remember, I have been having trouble sending group emails, that's why you have not heard from me lately. We - a big thank you to my husband Jack! - have been working on setting up a new system that should solve that problem.

Part of the set up is a house cleaning of sorts, to make sure that my list is up to date. This is Important. PLEASE let me know if you would like to be removed from this list. We want to keep all Oregon State wrestling fans informed, but we don't want to annoy people! To be taken off this list, simply reply to me, or use the unsubscribe links at the bottom of the email. If you'd prefer to have this email come to a different address, let me know that, too, and I can change it. To remain on the list, you don't have to do anything. Thank you!

Any feedback you have on this new system is appreciated!

Back to the subject of wrestling - the Beavers have two meets this week. The first is the inaugural Joe Wells Classic, to honor former Coach Joe Wells, who we all lost last year. This first JW Classic will be held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Thursday, January 7. From there, the Beavers will travel to Central Michigan for a meet January 9 before returning home.

More information on that will be coming soon.

Meanwhile, you can read all my previous messages on "The FALL"'s blogsite: http://osuwrestlingfall.blogspot.com/. (that is this site.)

If you would still like to join "The FALL" for this season, you can find the application form on the right side of this page under LINKS.
