More Personal Notes

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

While the summer is cooking along, I have a few personal notes to share.

Starting off with the serious news, both Greg Strobel and Larry Bielenberg, two of Oregon State's former National Champions, underwent major surgery this week. Greg Strobel had surgery for gall bladder cancer. His surgeon felt confident that he had removed all of the cancer.

Larry Bielenberg suffered from a bad back. Larry needed some vertebrae repaired along with a few other old injuries. If all went according to plan, he went home a couple of days ago, but will have some recuperation time to go through.

Greg's wife Donna was due to have a knee replacement, but it was postponed due to unknown circumstances.

Please keep Greg, Donna and Larry in your thoughts and prayers.

And to close on a lighter note, Garrett Drucker's dad, Joe, sent a few pictures of what Garrett has been up to in his spare time this hot summer. It seems that he has found a way to stay cool by racing a sailboat for friends of his.

In the photos, Garrett is at the wheel wearing a yellow cap on the burgundy hulled  boat named Hobo Flats. Just one of the perks of living in southern California! Way to go, Garrett! Nice work if you can get it!

It's hard to keep a former wrestler from competing, on the mat or on the water. Thanks for sharing these photos, Joe!
Go Garrett!

Stay cool everyone!

Recent Wrestling News - July 15, 2018

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Betty Woods & Linda Iwasaki

A few bits of news have crossed my desk in recent days - time to pass them along to you.

First - Congratulations to former Oregon State wrestler Travis Gardner, who married his fiance, Andrea, June 1, 2018. They are living in Anchorage and both teaching. Wishing the couple much happiness and success in life! Thanks to FALL Club Janet Gardner, Travis' mom, for sharing the happy news!

Linda Iwasaki & Eleanor Piha
Next - many of you know Eleanor (Lou) Piha and Betty (Steve) Woods, both recently widowed. FALL Club members Ron & Linda Iwasaki visited them lately and shared some pictures which I have attached. Thanks, Ron!

And last, an Update from the Coaching Corner, just sent out a few days ago. In case you didn't get it or haven't taken the time to read it, some interesting news in there:
- a recap of the recent Northwest Duals Championship and wrestling camp,
- a mention of newcomers heading to Fargo next week and a notice that Amar Dhesi will be squaring off with the Canadian Champ for a shot at the top spot on their World Team. Best of luck, Amar!
- Joey Palmer has taken a job teaching and coaching in Washington, so he will no longer be with the Beavers as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. Good luck, Joey! Keep in touch.

The update is pasted below my signature.

If anyone has any other interesting news of former wrestlers to share, please let me know. Thanks!

Go Beavs!

Hello Beaver Nation,

Summer can be a busy time, but we want to keep in touch about some things that have been going on!

We hosted the Northwest Dual Championship from June 28-30, with several wrestling alumni returning to coach their high school teams. Jake Gonzales coached Crook County, Jason Wullbrandt coached Clackamas High School and Jay Tovey brought Mt. Crest High School all the way from Utah and left with the first place trophy! We want to thank all of the schools and coaches that attended! We look forward to growing this tournament in the coming years.

Following the NW Dual Championship, we went right into our summer wrestling camps July 1-10. During those 10 days, we had about 24 Oregon State wrestlers, including some incoming freshman, who assisted with the camps and trained. Our guys worked hard, and we think the newcomers will transition into college wrestling very well!

Five of our incoming freshman, Brendan Kaylor (120), Riley Gurr (138), Logan Meek (145), Jackson McKinney (195) and Hayden Still (285), will be competing Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, next week with hopes of bringing back their own national title. This is only a handful of the new talent that is joining Beaver Nation.

Although a date has not yet been set, Amarveer Dhesi will be wrestling off for the Canadian World Team spot against Korey Jarvis in August. This wrestle-off was originally scheduled for early June, but Jarvis postponed due to an injury. The Senior World Championship will be held October 22-28 in Budapest, Hungary.

To conclude this email, we want to congratulate Joey Palmer on taking a teaching/coaching position at Tahoma High School in Washington. Joey served as the volunteer assistant coach this past year while also competing in freestyle at the senior level. We would like to thank Joey for all of the time he dedicated to our program, and we wish him the best of luck on his new journey!
