Join the OSU Wrestling Takedown Team + updates on next events

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Greetings from the Takedown Team!

Over the past ten months, the coaching staff, Athletic Dept and volunteers from The Fall and the Wrestling Endowment Fund revamped The Fall.  We bring these efforts to one streamlined organization with the Takedown Team.

Our combined leadership from the Wrestling Endowment Fund board and what was previously The Fall, will improve lines of communication and increase efficiencies and results of marketing and fundraising.

Those who already donated $100 or more on Dam Proud Day in April 2021 are already members of the Takedown Team for the 2021-22 season. For those who would like to join, the link is below. Please read the invitation from Evan Hooper.

Updates from the Takedown Team + OSU Wrestling Newsletter (10-24-2021)

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Wrestling season is upon us! The Black & Orange will be Sat 10/30 at 5pm. Then on Sat 11/6, the competition begins hosting Campbell at 6:30pm and Lehigh at 8pm. Due to the late finish, we will have our social prior. Reminder that our organization named The Fall no longer exists…the next email from me will be from the Takedown Team! More details on the social, registration, etc will come later this week.

Please see the below Wrestling Newsletter put together by Evan Hooper. It includes lots of updates but I want to highlight:

·         The Dam RTC’s Adeline Gray won her SIXTH world championship

·         The team and coaches helped longtime wrestling supporter Mike Denison with landscape work as Mike recovers from his stroke. We’re working on more ways that we as a family can help, so please stay tuned.

Last night was the 26th annual banquet for the Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, an event which had been postponed 3x due to the pandemic. We were finally able to honor inductees Jim Pond and Len Kauffman. For 50+ years they have been integral leaders in the wrestling community, not just for OSU but for our state, and it was awesome to celebrate this recognition of Lifetime Service with their families and the greater wrestling community. Coach P and Selanee were honored guests with Coach P serving as an awards presenter. Congrats to Len and Jim…and by the way, those distinguished Green Jackets are the only time we want to see you wearing green!  ; ) I loved catching up with those of you who were able to make it – 2 years has been too long!

Congrats to Larry Bielenberg and Restore College Wrestling in Oregon with the news that Linfield University is reinstating men’s wrestling and initiating women’s wrestling in the fall of 2022.

And finally, it is with great shock and sadness that I share that Howard Horton passed away. He earned his master’s and PhD from OSU and was a longtime professor here in the Dept of Fisheries. Just as impactful, Howard was involved in the OSU Wrestling Boosters in the 1990’s and instrumental in restarting the booster club in 2005 along with his late wife Jeannine, Elizabeth and Jack DeAngelis and the late Dennis Fuller. Howard and Jeannine were lifetime Beaver Wrestling supporters, never missing a meet or banquet. Our condolences to Howard’s partner Leslie and the family. Thanks to Elizabeth DeAngelis and John Dustin for sharing the obit below.

Go Beavs and see you soon,

Jana Iwasaki

Howard Franklin Horton

September 6, 1926 - October 15, 2021

Howard was born in Glendale, California to parents Vivian Lamb Horton and George Franklin Horton. Howard spent most of his childhood in California. Twice his family moved to Oklahoma where his family ran a small farm.

Following graduation from Glendale High School in 1944, he joined the Merchant Marines and then served in the US Army which allowed him to receive the GI Bill for college. He graduated from California State Polytechnic University in 1953 with a BS in Biological Science. He then attended Oregon State University and received his MS in Fish and Game Management in 1955 and his PhD in Fisheries Science in 1963. While in School at OSU, he was hired as an Instructor of Fisheries in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. He was promoted to Asst/Assoc Professor of Fisheries and eventually to Professor of Fisheries. During his career at OSU he served as major professor to 35 graduate students in his department. As his career at OSU progressed, he became Director of the Extension Sea Grant Program, then the Foreign Observer Program and finally the Director of International Fisheries and Wildlife. He retired from his career at OSU in 1989 and remained active in departmental activities as Professor Emeritus. Among his many honors and awards were R M Wade Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching; Award for Outstanding Contribution, Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission; and Lifetime Achievement Award, Oregon Chapter American Fisheries Society.

In 1982 while still a professor, he was appointed as the Court Technical Advisor to the US District Court in Portland, Oregon. In 1998 he was appointed to also serve the same position in the US District Court, Western District of Washington state. In those positions he provided scientific advice to a succession of US District Court Judges. He was increasingly involved as Columbia River salmon recovery efforts became more intense and controversial in cases heard by Judges James Redden and Michael Simon. Howard was very proud of his role in ensuring that salmon biology was appropriately represented in the court deliberations. He retired from this effort in 2016.

While working for California Department of Fish and Game near Yosemite National Park in 1952, he met his future wife Jeannine who was managing the LeConte lodge there. They were married in 1954 and moved to Corvallis where they raised their four children; Dana, Lisa, Jenner and Ross.

Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman. You could find him fishing for steelhead in the Siletz River, for salmon in the ocean or dropping a crab trap into a bay or estuary. He hunted ducks and upland game birds with his many retrievers. He enjoyed big game hunting; many a trip was taken with his hunting buddies Chuck and Gene and with his children. He was particularly proud of his once-in-a-lifetime bighorn sheep and the six by six bull elk he harvested in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness of Idaho.

Howard was an avid fan of the OSU Beavers football, basketball, wrestling and women's basketball teams. He loved to tinker with cars and taught all of his children basic auto mechanics.

In the 1980's Howard taught and worked with faculty at the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia and the Instituto Profesional de Osorno in Chile. Through this work he formed a life long friendship with some of his students, whom he considered his second family.

Howard was a loyal father, friend, teacher, mentor and scientist. He took pride in the successes of his children and his students.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife Jeannine, his mother, father, and sister Rudene McQuay. He is survived by his son Dana (Doreen) of Missoula, Montana; daughter Lisa of Portland, Oregon; daughter Jenner of Mill Creek, Washington; son Ross of Corvallis, Oregon; granddaughters Emily Krieg of Vancouver, Washington; Jenner Trutna of Panama City, Florida; one great granddaughter; his companion Leslie Carraway Verts; and his Chilean family José Nuñez, Teresa Donoso, Felipé Nuñez and Gerardo Nuñez.

The Oregon State wrestling team is ranked No. 24 in InterMat's 2021-22 preseason poll, which was released last Thursday.

The Beavers concluded the 2020-21 season with a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Oregon State claimed two individual titles at the Pac-12 Championships on Feb. 28 in Grant Willits (141) and Devan Turner (133). The Beavers also qualified six wrestlers for the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships to mark the 38th time in program history that six or more wrestlers have qualified.

Oregon State is also represented in eight weights with Willits clocking in at No. 10 at 141 pounds and Turner following at No. 13 at 133. Additionally, redshirt junior Hunter Willits and transfer Tanner Harvey landed inside the top-20 in their respective weight classes.

The Beavers are one of two Pac-12 schools ranked in the initial poll with No. 8 Arizona State being the other.

Oregon State Individual Rankings:

141: Grant Willits No. 10

149: Cory Crooks No. 25

STUDENT-ATHLETE BITES

In this version of student-athlete bites we speak with Gary Traub and Devan Turner about their thoughts on the beginning of the season, and their outlook ahead!

Gary Traub: Heavyweight Cincinnati, Ohio

-       Im excited for the opportunity to get one more chance to All-American, and get a full season in. I talked about how hard it was last year to have to play spectator, and watch the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships. It was a wake-up call that nothing is going to be given to you, and you have to fight and earn everything you want. I think Im in the right environment to get where I want to go, and achieve the things I have set out to achieve. Honestly, this is the first season where Im training like Im going to be on the podium in March and it feels good to be surrounded by all these other guys that want the same thing, because association brings assimilation.

-       Looking at the next couple of months and the teams we are going to face, I have no doubt we will be ready come Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Championships. Its like one buzzard said to the other, screw patience, lets go crush something!

Devan Turner: 133 lb. Dixon, Calif.

-       This program is headed in the right direction. On and off the mat, the university, the coaching staff, the team and Oregon State supporters are all jumping on board to make OSU Wrestling the powerhouse it once was.

-       This year we all have chips on our shoulders, and weve got something to prove. Hop on board now, or get left behind. Oregon State Wrestling is coming!

OSU TEAM VOLUNTEER WEEKEND

On September 25th the team volunteered some of their time to help out Mike and Kerry Dennison who were landscaping their yard after Mikes accident last year. The Dennisons have been big supporters of OSU wrestling, and it was only right to give back and help them for all they have done for us.

If you'd like to see pictures from the day, you can head to our Instagram page HERE.

ALUMNI/FAMILY WEEKEND

On Saturday October 2, we invited all Oregon State wrestling alumni and family members back to Corvallis for a gathering and we were blown away by all of the support. It was magical to have so many people on campus to meet the new staff, student-athletes, and see all of the upgrades that have been done to our facility.

#BeaverNation is truly something special, and we cant wait to keep sharing these experiences with you in the years to come!

WRESTLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Earlier this month at the Wrestling World Championships, BeaverDam RTC athlete Adeline Gray, won her unprecedented sixth World Championships in Oslo, Norway.

She is the first American Freestyle Womens wrestler to attain this achievement.
