Midlands - Day 2 Complete

The good news was those of us watching the Midlands via live-stream on TrackWrestling got to watch Joey Delgado's finals match. The bad news is that it didn't last long. Joey lost by injury default.

Hopefully, the injury is not serious. We definitely do not need to lose any more wrestlers to injury this season!

To wrap up Day 2, three Beavers started the day. Jack Hathaway, in consolations, lost his first match. He was only one win from placing. Cody Crawford, also in consolations, fought his way into the placements and ended up 7th. Cody was seeded 10th. Joey Delgado started out in the semi-finals, but then dropped in to consolations where  he ended up in the 5th place match. Joey had been seeded 6th and placed 6th. Good work, Cody and Joey!

Delgado In 5th Place Finals This Evening - Crawford Places!

Joey Delgado is the lone Beaver to survive to the finals, and will face Sam Speno of NC State in the 5th-6th place match. Way to go, Joey!! The Midlands Tournament finals take place this evening. Start time is 7 pm Central, 5 pm Pacific.

Cody Crawford finished up his tournament earlier today, battling his way back through the consolation bracket - ending up in the 7th-8th place final. That match took place at the end of Session III. Cody defeated Conan Jennings of Northwestern 1-0. Jennings was the person who took Crawford out of the Championship bracket. Nice to see Cody take back that loss! Cody Crawford - 7th Place at Midlands!

The finals will be televised on the Big Ten Network, so they may not be streamed by Track Wrestling. Live stats may be available, however, if you don't get that TV channel.

Oregon State is sitting in 20th place at the moment, let's hope Joey can bump that back up a notch!

I will send out the complete results for Oregon State later this evening.

Go Joey! Go Beavs!

Midlands - First Day Results

Wrestling is over for the day in Evanston, Illinois, at the Ken Kraft Midlands Tournament. The Beavers inched up a notch to 18th position. Congratulations to Joey Delgado who battled his way into the semi's!

Joey Delgado is assured of placing no lower than 6th place. He faces Justin Oliver of Central Michigan, the #2 seed in the semi's in the morning. Joey was seeded #6.

Both Jack Hathaway and Cody Crawford are in the Consolation bracket. They both need to win one more match to place. Hathaway faces unseeded Nick Zanetta of Pittsburg. Jack was seeded #13. Crawford, the #10 seed faces 9 seed Michael Boykin of NC State. Best of luck, Jack & Cody!!

Unfortunately the evening session eliminated Kegan Calkins, Abraham Rodriquez, and David Henry. Bryce Parson, Rodney Williams, Weston Dobler and Bob Coleman also wrestled, but dropped out of the brackets in Session I.

Beavers at Midlands Dec 29 & 30 & Recruiting News

Hope everyone has been enjoying the holidays! The Beaver wrestlers had little time off, and now head into the land of ice and snow, for the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois. The Midlands take place on Dec 29 & 30, Thursday and Friday of this week.

On Thursday the first session starts at 9:30 am CST. Session 2 begins at 7 pm CST. (Central Time is 2 hours ahead of Pacific.)

To find more information on the schedule, where to stay, tickets, etc., check the article at Northwestern.

One bit of advice, be sure you are reading about Midlands from this year, not past years. Check for the 2016 date or be sure it is the 54th Midlands, not the 53rd or earlier. An article about the top contenders for this year has been released.

If you have been following the recruiting for wrestling, you will remember that we have some recruits coming in from Colorado. Well, now we have another Coloradan joining the ranks of the Beavers! Thanks to Craig Scharer for sending the link to the list of recruits with this news:

"12-12-16 Oregon State, Kolsen Welham, Holy Family, CO - 165/174

To catch up with more Oregon State Wrestling news, check the Archives at osubeavers.com to see what you may have missed. The most recent article is about rankings from Dec 20.

Go Beavs! Bring home some Midlands hardware!

Beavers Fifth At Reno TOC!

The Beavers finished their weekend trip on an up note, taking fifth at the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions! Two Beavers won titles, Ronnie Bresser at 125 and Cody Crawford at Hwt. Congratulations, Champions Ronnie & Cody!

Other Beavers who placed: Joey Palmer, 4th at 141, Corey Griego 5th at 197 and David Henry 2nd at Hwt. Both Ronnie and David were unattached, so their scores did not count toward the team total. Congratulations Joey, Corey and David!

If anyone has any finished brackets to share, please let me know. For more information check the article at OSU.

One note, Penn State was planning to attend, but due to the weather, they could not make it. Too many flights were cancelled and they could not get in.

Colby watch: Colby Covington won his UFC match yesterday by unanimous decision. You can read more in this Fox Sports News Article. Congratulations, Colby!

The Beavers are finished now until after Christmas. They complete the calendar year with a trip to the Ken Kraft Midlands Tournament back in Evanston, Illinois on Dec. 29-30. If you want to check out Midlands, you can find some information on this page. At this point, much of the information is from 2015, so you'll have to wait for it to be updated.

Merry Christmas! Go Beavs!

Beavers Lose the Tie At UVU

Maybe it was the altitude, the announcers said Utah Valley Univ. is at 4000 feet. Whatever it was, the Beavers just couldn't quite come out with a victory.

At the end of the meet the score was tied 16-16. So the referees turned to the rule book. The first criteria for breaking a tie - most matches won. Both had 5. #2 -Most falls. Neither team had a fall. #3 - Most points scored. OSU had 72, UVU had 78. Meet goes to UVU 17-16.

The Beavers started out on a roll, Kegan Calkins won a decision at 125. Devan Turner returned to the line-up and picked up a decision at 133. Joey Palmer won a major at 141. At 149, Joey Delgado picked up a decision.

At 157, Bryce Parson seemed to have the match in hand. In fact, it seemed that he had the fall, but the referee was on the wrong side and did not see it. But the tide turned and he ended up losing the match. That set in motion a series of wins for the Wolverines  - 157, 165 - where Abraham Rodriquez wrestled up a weight in place of Rodney Williams - 174, 184 and 197.

Cody Crawford pulled out a close victory at heavyweight to bring the meet to its 16-16 conclusion. Congratulations to all the match winners!

The Beavers have a few days to get ready for their next tournament, the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 18.

Meanwhile, former Beaver wrestler Colby Covington has a big event coming up on Saturday, Dec 17. Thanks to his dad, Brad Covington for sharing the following: Colby "Chaos" Covington will be competing in UFC Fight night Sacramento on Dec 17.  Fights begin at 2pm PT on Fox Sports 1 with Colby currently scheduled for 3:30pm.

Good luck, Colby!

For more details on the meet tonight, read the article at osubeavers.com.

Next Up - Utah Valley - Thursday Dec 15

Finals are over - time to get back to wrestling before the calendar year expires! The Beavers have two upcoming events: a dual with Utah Valley on Thursday and the Reno Tournament  of Champions on Sunday Dec 18. They finish out the year at Midlands on Dec 29 and 30.

The wrestlers travel to Orem, Utah, to take on the Utah Valley Wolverines on Thursday, Dec 15, at 7 pm Mountain Time, 6 pm Pacific. the dual takes place in Lockhart Arena (formerly their PE building).

For those who cannot make it there to watch, it looks like UV will have it on live video. You can find the video on this page. You can also find a link to the same video on the OSU schedule page.

To scout the Wolverines, you can find their latest article here. The Wolverines recently visited Boise State and lost 32-14.

After completing the dual at Orem, the Beavers travel on to Reno for the Tournament of Champions, all day on Sunday, Dec 18. The official website for the TOC has all the info you will need for that event. FloWrestling subscribers will be able to follow the action live.

For all the latest news at Oregon State, check the Archives for links to the stories. The most recent articles have been on rankings. Palmer, Delgado, Griego and Crawford remain in the top 25. Keep up the good work, guys!

Another reminder - we need to decide soon, so if you would like to ride the fan bus to Stanford for the Pac-12 Tournament, let me know! At the present, we do not have enough riders to make it a go. If you have signed up, you might want to talk some of your friends in "The FALL" to join you! Non-members are welcome to ride, but it costs more
. (They are always welcome to join the Club!)

Cliff Keen Final Results

149 - Joey Delgado

Oregon State finished the Cliff Keen Tournament in 16th place with two placers - Joey Delgado (149) and Corey Griego (197). Both won their final match to take 5th place in their weight class. Congratulations, Joey & Corey!!

Both Joey Palmer and Cody Crawford were close to placing, but missed it by one match. Oregon State improved their position over 2015. Good work, Beavers!

For all the details on the day, read the article at osubeavers.com.

Michael Denison, FALL Board member, was present at the tournament,  busy taking pictures. He has shared some of those great photos with us. I will get them posted here, just as soon as I can get them up.

The Beavers now have almost 2 weeks to get patched up and hit the road to Utah Valley for a dual on Dec. 15.

Cliff Keen - Day 1 Wrap Up

Only three Beavers survived the evening session of the Las Vegas Cliff Keen Tournament.

Joey Delgado, Corey Griego and Cody Crawford are the three who will be wrestling when Saturday morning
rolls around. All three are now in the consolation round.

Joey Palmer and Weston Dobler were eliminated in the evening rounds.

For all the information on the day's action, read the article at the osubeavers.com page.

You can watch all the action even if you are not there. FloWrestling (a subscription service) has live-streaming on all mats for the Cliff Keen. Thanks to Jamie Dobler for sharing that tip!

Wrestling begins again in the morning at 9:00. The championship finals - first through fourth - are scheduled to begin at 3:00 Saturday afternoon.

Hang in there Joey, Corey and Cody! Go Beavs!

Session I - Cliff Keen Results

Just a quick update on how the Beavers are doing in Las Vegas.

Two are still in the championship bracket with no losses. Joey Delgado and Cody Crawford will wrestle in the quarterfinals this evening. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!!

Three are alive in the Consolation brackets with one loss - Joey Palmer, Weston Dobler and Corey Griego. Their last matches in Consolations went this way:
Consie:
Palmer won 22-6 over Western Wyoming
Dobler won 5-2 over Ohio State
Griego won 7-2 over Edinboro

This information was sent to me by Craig Scharer and Michael Denison who are there. Thanks, guys!! I have not found a way to follow the action, and we did not make it there this year.

The
rest of the team (Caulkins, Rodriquez, Williams and Coleman) was 0-2. Devan Turner was unable to make the trip due to injury, so the Beavers do not have a 133 at Cliff Keen.

Session II begins at 6 pm.
