Beavers Face Tough Pac-12 Foe on Saturday

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Oregon State Wrestling team travels to Tempe, AZ for a tough battle with one of their most formidable foes of the year to date. Arizona State boasts a #9 team ranking with seven ranked wrestlers. Oregon State has three wrestlers in the rankings.

The Saturday, Jan 20, meet begins at 12:30 Pacific, (1:30 Mountain for those who will be there.) It will be televised live on Pac-12 television. Live stats will be available  from TrackWrestling.

As is the usual you will also be able to follow along with Twitter.

A couple of videos made after the OSU meet with Wyoming last Sunday are posted on that Pac-12 television webpage. Scroll down the page and you will find a video recap of the meet - featuring OSU's wins - and an interview with Corey Griego.

To do some scouting ahead, you will find more articles to read at:

If you enjoy watching the meets on television, you can also watch ASU's first dual of the weekend on Friday night, Jan. 19 at 8 pm Mountain, 7:00 pm Pacific. Stanford will face ASU in that contest. That meet will also be televised on Pac-12 television.

Any Beaver fans living in the Tempe area? I'm sure the Beavers would love to see some friendly faces in the crowd. The Sun Devils will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of National Championship team, so they will have lots of ASU fans on hand. It would be good to have some supportive OSU fans in the stands as well.

The Beavers next dual will be back home on Jan. 28 vs Northern Colorado.

Go Beavs!

Cowboys Ride Away With Meet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

A Sunday night didn't deter the Beaver fans. A crowd of 974 awaited the Beavers return to Gill  yesterday. Okay, a few of them were Wyoming fans, but not many. The fans had some action packed matches to cheer, and they had the OSU Dance team on hand for extra entertainment. It was not enough, however and Wyoming left with the win, 29-12.

The Beavs put up a good fight facing off against a good Wyoming team, but were unable to manage the victory. The meet started at 197 where Corey Griego made his statement on the mat, winning by tech fall, 17-2. Next up, Amar Dhesi at Hwt added a major, 13-4. Back to 125, a banged up Ronnie Bresser hung tough and got a 4-2 decision, leaving the Beavs ahead by 12-0 score. Way to go, guys!

The beginning of the 133 match was where the Beavers ran into the strength of the Cowboy line-up. Devan Turner met #7 Montorie Bridges, Jack Hathaway had the toughest contest - meeting #1 Bryce Meredith at 141. At 149 Kurt Mode tangled with #19 Sam Turner. Kurt was held scoreless in the first two periods, but kept fighting to get a takedown in the third period.

At 157, true freshman Hunter Willits came closest to a win against #10 Archie Colgan, losing a close decision 4-1.The crowd was into the match, urging Hunter on, but he just couldn't get there. Hunter has been wrestling a lot of ranked guys and has come so close to beating most of them. You're so close, Hunter! Keep going!

At 165, Rodney Williams filled in for an injured Billy Bigelow. Rodney's match was with #14 Brandon Ashworth. At 174 Myles Terry lost a 5-16 major and Seth McLeod had the final bout at 184, losing by tech fall in the first period. Final Score OSU 12 Wyoming 29.

For more information, you can read the following articles:

One note about the two articles - they must have gotten their ranking numbers from different sources. OSU lists Wyoming as #23 as a team. Wyoming claims a #11 team ranking. With five ranked wrestlers, including a #1, the #11 rank seems more likely. Wyoming also lists Sam Turner, their 149, as #19 while OSU does not give him a ranking.

About 60-70 fans, wrestlers and the coaches gathered for the after meet Social in Reser. They enjoyed pizza, wings, some veggies and some delicious cookies. A drawing was held for about 10 different doorprizes. FALL Club President Reynold Gardner interviewed Hunter Willits who was a good sport in attempting to answer Reynold's amusing questions. Head Coach Jim Zalesky wrapped up the evening with his comments on the meet and the season so far.

The Beavers will be traveling down to Tempe, AZ, for a Saturday, Jan. 20 meet with the ASU Sun Devils, the current Pac-12 favorite. As Coach Zalesky said, it will be a good test to see where we are at this point in the season. More details will be coming later in the week.

Update From Coaching Staff

Oregon State  Wrestling Fans,
What you have been waiting for has finally arrived! This Sunday, January 14, the Beavers will be back on their home mat in Gill Coliseum for a dual with the Wyoming Cowboys. Wrestling begins at 7:00 pm. Be there to charge up the Beavers!!
Scouting Wyoming
The Beavers will have their hands full this Sunday, as the Pokes - as they call themselves - are currently ranked #11 and promise to be a formidable foe. Check out their article on their upcoming weekend - duals with CSU Bakersfield and then OSU.

Following the Action
The best way to catch all the action is to be there, cheering for the Beavers from the stands. There's plenty of room for everyone in Gill! The box office and doors open at 6:00.

If you can't make it, you have a couple of other options. The dual will be covered live by Pac-12 television. Not everyone can get Pac-12 tv, but you can still follow along with live stats provided by TrackWrestling.

Social After Meet
It has been a while since we've had any home wrestling, so "The FALL" Board wanted everyone to have a chance to get together after the meet concludes. There will be a Social following the dual. Location will be Reser Stadium's Club Level, third floor.

FALL Club members who have received their badges in the mail, get in free by presenting your badge at the door. If you want/need a lanyard for your badge, just ask and you shall receive. Also be sure to ask for your 2017-18 edition lapel pin. We did not mail the lanyards or pins. Their bulk adds considerable time, effort and cost to mailing. It's much easier to hand them out when you arrive. If you've signed up late and you haven't received your badge yet, just let us know and we'll get you in.

We will have a table out front in the lobby of Gill from about 6:15-6:50. When the meet wraps up we will  relocate to the doorway of the Club at Reser.

As our custom, we will have door prizes and some snacks for munching while you visit with your friends, waiting for the team and coaches to arrive. Then there will be a short presentation for you.

Join "the FALL"
It's not too late to join "The FALL" for the 2017-18 season. We are just coming to the heart of the home duals with two this month and two in February. You can easily sign up through the On-line Portal anytime, or sign up in person at our table either in Gill or in Reser.

Help Needed at Pac-12 Tables
Do you like to work at the scoring table at wrestling? Evan Hooper is still looking for a few good helpers for the Pac-12 tournament, which OSU will be hosting the last Sunday in February, all day the 25th. These are the positions that are needed:

I am in need yet of one scorer, one triangle board operator and two towel people to alert the refs of the final seconds of each period.

Jan 10, 2018 Update from Coaches' Corner:

Beavers Recap: After a long road trip, the Beavers are finally back in Corvallis. During the first part of the trip, the Beavers competed in the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The team fought hard and finished in 12th place with 47 team points. Ronnie Bresser (125) had a great performance, taking home second place. In his semifinal match, Bresser beat two-time Jr. World Champion Spencer Lee (Iowa). He then lost a close finals match to Nick Suriano (Rutgers), who is ranked second in the country. Amar Dhesi (HWT) had a sixth-place finish.
Following Midlands, the Beavers set out for Brookings, South Dakota. Despite snow and temperatures as low as -20 degrees, the Beavers had a solid four days of training leading up to the teams dual against South Dakota State (#15). Bresser (125) came out hot against the Jackrabbits, picking up a 15-3 major decision. Kurt Mode (149) also picked up a win with a 10-7 decision. Dhesi (HWT) ended the night with a pin in 2:43. South Dakota State came away with a 30-13 victory.
With one more dual meet, the Beavers hopped in the vans and drove to Ames, Iowa, to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The dual meet started at 197 pounds with Cory Griego winning the match by a 7-1 decision. The Beavers kept rolling with Dhesi (HWT) winning with a 13-4 major decision. Bresser received a forfeit at 125 pounds. The last Beaver to get a win was Billy Bigelow (165) with a gritty 3-2 decision. The Cyclones defeated the Beavers 24-16.
Coming up: The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 14, as they host Wyoming (#12) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Beavers are back on the road to take on Arizona State (ranked #9). To wrap up the month, the Beavers will have a home dual meet on Jan. 28 against Northern Colorado at 3 p.m.  For more information on dates and times, check out the link below for our official schedule.

Beavers Lose Close One to ISU

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Oregon State Beavers won the first three matches, beginning with 197, but then were only able to pick up one more match, losing to Iowa State 24-16.

Congratulations to the match winners, Corey Griego 197, Amar Dhesi 285 by major, Ronnie Bresser 125 by forfeit and Billy Bigelow 165 by decision!

There were moments when things could have gone the other way. At 157, Hunter Willits was ahead the entire match until a stalling point put the match in OT. At 174, Myles Terry was only behind by two but his opponent must be a very good rider, as he chose top for the third period and ended up with a pin. At 184 Seth McLeod was leading throughout his match until the end of the third period when Pestano picked up a quick 3 points and took the win.

Jackrabbits Elude Beavers

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

It may have been cold outside, but the wrestling was hot inside Frost arena tonight. The Beavers fought hard, but South Dakota, with 4 ranked wrestlers, had more firepower than the Beavers, closing out the meet 30-13.

Oregon State saw the return of two of their ranked wrestlers to the line-up which helped keep the score as close as it was. Ronnie Bresser's return filled the previously empty 125 weight class which Oregon State has had to forfeit in the the season's early duals. Ronnie not only filled the slot, he won by major, putting up 4 points on the scoreboard to start the dual.

The Beavers won 3 of the 10 matches, Bresser's victory at 125, Kurt Mode at 149 and the final match of the evening a fall by Amar Dhesi in his return to the line-up at heavyweight. Congratulations to all the match winners!

One other match almost went in the Beaver's column, the 157 bout between Hunter Willits and #11 Luke Zilverberg. Willits had led in the match but in the end it came down to OT and a one point victory for the ranked Jackrabbit. Keep pushing, Hunter!

For further information, you can review the Twitter notes by Evan Hooper at Oregon State's Twitter feed, his article at osubeavers.com or the view from South Dakota State in their news feed.

Meet Results as compiled by TrackWrestling:
125 Ronnie Rios (Oregon State) over Connor Brown (South Dakota State) (MD 15-3)

133 Seth Gross (South Dakota State) over Devan Turner (Oregon State) (Fall 1:10)

141 Henry Pohlmeyer (South Dakota State) over Jack Hathaway (Oregon State) (Dec 5-2)

149 Kurt Mode (Oregon State) over Colten Carlson (South Dakota State) (Dec 10-7)

157 Luke Zilverberg (South Dakota State) over Hunter Willits (Oregon State) (TB-1 5-4)

165 Logan Peterson (South Dakota State) over Billy Bigelow (Oregon State) (Fall 4:54)

174
David Kocer (South Dakota State) over Myles Terry (Oregon State) (TF 21-6 5:16)

184 Martin Mueller (South Dakota State) over Seth Mcleod (Oregon State) (MD 16-8)

197 Nate Rotert (South Dakota State) over Corey Griego (Oregon State) (Dec 9-4)

285 Amar Dhesi (Oregon State) over Blake Wolters (South Dakota State) (Fall 2:43)
Team Score: 30 - 13
