Please let me know if I have any of the guys identified incorrectly - still getting used to the new faces.

At the end of the Practice session, wrestler Devin Reynolds came over to the bleachers, thanked everyone for coming and visited. He told us that Jess Lewis is doing well, has started his physical therapy and enjoys visitors, so stop by and say hello if you are in town!

Next chance to see the Beavers getting geared up for the season - Saturday, October 24. Practice on the 24th will be followed by the Parent-Fan Tailgater. More information will be coming out on that, but get it marked on your calendar!

Open Practice - Sept 25 - Part 1

The Beavers held their first Open Practice on Friday afternoon in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room before the football game with Stanford.

Coaches make sure the guys have their paperwork in
A small contingent of fans and parents were on hand to take in the action. This practice was unofficial, so it wasn't as structured as usual. Someone was calling directions for the warm-up and cool down, I think it was Joey Palmer, if I heard correctly. In between those two periods, the guys paired off and wrestled.

It was fun to get back into the room and see the guys out there going through their paces. There were some epic battles going on between Kegan Calkins and Ronnie Bresser III. They were right in front of the bleachers, so they were hard to miss! Joey Palmer got in at least  one throw that drew oohs and ahs from the bleachers across the room, so you know it was good! Amar Dhesi was looking good, he was wrestling first with the new Volunteer Assistant Coach Devin Mellon, then with Austin Morehead who is back to help with the team. Everyone there was working hard. It's hard to focus on any one pair.

I took a few pictures so you can get a glimpse of what was going on.

Some new faces in the room among the veterans

Austin Morehead paired off with Jimmy Millea

Ronnie Stevens and Bryce Parson

The Beavers have lost another of their alumni wrestlers to the sands of time, as Bill Geister passed away last Sunday, September 20. Bill wrestled for the Beavers on the 1952-54 teams.

Bill's family wanted us to share this message with all of Bill's friends in wrestling:

Open Practice on Friday!

The wait is almost over! Tomorrow afternoon, September 25, Friday, 4 pm at the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room in the Sports Performance Center, the first Open Practice of the 2015-16 season will be held. It's your first chance to see who is on the team this year.

This will be an unofficial practice as the official start time for D1 Wrestling is a short time away in October, I believe. The coaches will be on hand, but the practice will be run by the team. It's still a great chance to get to know the new faces and say hello to some of the familiar faces. Don't forget to print out a roster and bring it along to help with the names and faces if you are not familiar with everyone.

Practice is held in the wrestling room, which is upstairs in the Sports Performance Center on campus, between Gill Coliseum and Reser Stadium. The entrance is on the east side, facing Gill, in the center of the building. The basketball practice rooms are next to the door. Inside you will find the stairs straight ahead, or an elevator to the right.

There is a limited amount of bleacher space in the far corner inside the room. You may also stand along the sidelines, off the mats, to watch. No matter where you are, please do be aware that the guys will be wrestling and occasionally will come flying off onto the sidelines!

Practice lasts approximately 1.5 hours, so if you are attending the football game, you will have plenty of time to get to your seats for that.

Parking is not usually a problem for wrestling meets. However, since there will be a football game, all of the parking lots around the stadium on campus will be pay lots with tailgaters starting to congregate. Sometimes there may be on street parking, but this will be Friday, a class day, so that may be limited as well.

Your next chance to see the team at work will be October 24, a Saturday, for Open Practice and the Parent and Fan Tailgate Party. More information about that closer to the date.

While you have your calendar out, mark down Wednesday, Nov 4, 7 pm in Gill Coliseum for the Intrasquad where team members battle for the starting positions. The team gets their first taste of real competition a few days later at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove, on Sunday, Nov 8. The first home action will be November 21, a Saturday. The team starts off the home season in a big way, hosting a tri-dual with Utah Valley and Rutgers. For the schedule, check here

Beavers Kick Off Open Practice!

Only one more week until you can get your first taste of the 2015-16 Wrestling Team!!

Here is a short message from the Coaching Staff with more details about the Open Practice and the schedule:
Next weekend we will have our first open practice for the fans, alumni and parents at 4 PM on Friday Night, Sept. 25, before the football game vs. Stanford. We would love to have you in The Dale Thomas Wrestling Room and check out the team as we begin our build for the 2015-2016 season! We are excited about our team this year and the potential that they have. We would love as many of our alumni to be on hand as possible.

Our schedule is still tentative at this points, unfortunately…Pac 12 TV switched some things around and we are looking to finalize one date of competition before it’s finished. We have a great challenging schedule this year that I think you will like, so please stay tuned. As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

OSU Coaching Staff

For those who are not familiar with the location of the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room, it is upstairs in the Sports Performance Center, next to the Basketball Practice Center.

Practice usually lasts about 1.5 hours. There are bleachers in the back corner of the room, but if they are full, you are welcome to observe from the sidelines of the room, just be sure to keep an eye out for moving bodies on the mats! Hope many of you can come!

Associate Head Coach at Oregon State, Troy Steiner, was there coaching one of the teams. A sizeable group of Beaver fans were on hand to take in all the action.

For complete results, see here. For more stories, check here.

Now for a bit of housekeeping. Many of you have not received the last couple of emails I sent out, due to Google changing the rules for Group Email without telling anyone what was going on. Instead of working as usual, it has randomly picked addresses, thereby dropping many people off.

For now at least, I will be posting all of my email messages to the website for "The FALL" so anyone/everyone can read them. For Website click here.

Hopefully I will be able to get this corrected before things get going for the season, so bear with me, please. I may have to change email addresses again if Google chooses to restrict email too much. If anyone does a lot of large group emails and has an emailer to recommend, please let me know! Meanwhile, if you haven't heard from me in a while, check the website for news. Thank you!

Wrestling Update - Septemeber 3, 2015

In case you have not already seen them, there are several good articles out about Jess Lewis and all he's been through lately. There is also good news - Jess is expected to be released to home care next week!

The first article was on OregonLive, the on-line Oregonian. Here is the link, thanks to Craig Scharer for sending that link:
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/09/jess_lewis_and_the_fight_for_h.html

Len Kauffman also sent the note today that you can read down below my sign-off. It includes a couple more links to different stories about Jess. They are all well worth reading.

One bit of wrestling news - the roster for the Beavers has been posted: you can find it here: click here

Message from Len Kauffman:

Jess Lewis' gathering at his rehabilitation facility yesterday was attended by a good number of OSU buddies as well as house residents.  Craig Hanneman presentation on his 2012 Mount Everest climb was well received.  Jess is recovering well and expected to go home next week - with home care assistance.  Kerry Eggers was there and wrote a wonderful article for today's Portland Tribune.  This morning Kerry also a copy of a 2013 article on Jess.  Links to both are here:

Think you'll enjoy them.  Keep Jess in your thoughts.

Wrestling Update - Tentative Schedule - September 1, 2015

We've all been waiting for the schedule to come out and here it is! It is still tentative, so don't write it in permanent marker anywhere, but we've got something to hang on the refrigerator!

For the schedule see the message from the coaches below my sign-off. It also includes the tidbit that our first Open Practice will be Sept 25 at 4 pm, before the football game - Beavs vs Stanford. Open Practices are held in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room in the Sports Performance Center on campus.
A couple of other items to bring to your attention:
Jess Lewis - an update on Jess from Len Kauffman:
Jess is now at Avamere Rehabilitaion of Lebanon, 350 S. 8th, Lebanon, OR, 97335 (541-259-1221).  Craig Hanneman, one of Jess' football buddies and four-year pro player, will make presentation about his Mount Everest climb for folks at Avamere this Wednesday at 3:30 pm

Craig tells us that Jess has many visitors, so it might be a good idea to call first.  Might be good to see him at Craig's talk Wednesday.

Len Kauffman also shared some sad news, that former Beaver wrestler Wally Ogdahl has lost his battle with cancer. There will be a Celebration of Wally's life this Friday.

See Len K. & John Horn's messages for details and a link to the obituary for Wally in the Salem paper:

Len: See John Horn's message below about Celebration of Life for Wally Ogdahl - 12:00 to 2:00 this Friday at Illahee Hills Country Club, 3376 Country Club Dr S, Salem, OR 97302.  Note his reference to River Road being closed.

*********
John: A Celebration of Life will be held On Sept 4th from 12 to 2:00 at Illahee Hills Country Club.  It is set for this time in order that people can make the Beaver game that evening.  There is one problem with this site in that a section of  River Road leading out to Illahee will be Closed and so people will need to make arrangements to get around the closed section (really not that difficult).  His obit was in today's (Sunday) Statesman Journal.  John

Our sympathies to the Ogdahl family. Wally was a long time member of "The FALL" Fan Club. May he rest in Peace.

Fans-
We hope everything is going well and you are looking forward to the season as much as we are. We are only 10 weeks out from another college  wrestling season! This is a TENTATIVE SCHEDULE for the 2015-2016 Oregon State Wrestling season. Times may change, pending basketball schedules and Pac 12 TV related issues. Once it is set in stone, I will send out a confirmed final schedule. This should give you an idea though, and something to start getting ready for! November 21st is our home opener and we would like to pack Gill to kick the season off. The individuals and experience we have returning has us excited for a good year. Seven wrestlers return with NCAA experience and we look to go for five straight Pac 12 Titles, but more importantly get back to the upper echelon at the NCAA national level. Our first Open Workout for the fans will likely be September 25th at 4 PM, before The Beavs-Stanford football game.

A few more items for your attention:
Gaby Lara lost her hard fought battle with epilepsy this week, she was 23. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to her family - Jay and Dee Lara, her parents, and Jason Lara, her brother. Geena Gall Lara passed along this message from the family:
Gaby's Memorial Service will be held this Saturday, August 29th at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa at 11 AM. Please join us in Celebrating her beautiful life.

The address is 3800 South Fairview Street, Santa Ana CA

May Gaby rest in peace.
I have not heard any further news about Jess Lewis's condition other than that he was doing better. Will let you know when I hear about where he will be for rehab.
On a different note, one Beaver fan asked if any other Beavers  were going to be headed to Las Vegas for the World Wrestling Competition. If anyone is going and would like to organize a meeting place for Beaver fans, let me know what you have decided and I will share the word. Dates are Sept 8-13. For more information: check the venue site, and the USA Wrestling site for other info.

Saving the best for last, a message from the coaches' corner gives us a quick note on the schedule. And, the video at the link below will get you revved up for wrestling to start up again soon! See below for the note and the Youtube link.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hello all,

Hope your summer has treated you all well. We have had a good summer of camps and training. Some of our guys once again got the chance to train at The U.S. Olympic Training Center with some of the nation’s best wrestlers. Thanks to all who attended or brought their teams to our camps! Your support is awesome. We are excited about the 2015-2016 season, and getting Oregon State back to where we need to be on the NATIONAL LEVEL. We are excited about the guys we have coming back in the fold this year and a good crop of freshman. We return 7 NCAA Qualifiers and have the ability to have several guys compete on the national stage. The schedule is a done and should be published soon. It is a good challenging schedule and should provide great competition and preparation for the post season. Here is a little video to get you a small summer wrestling fix. More updates to follow the closer we get to the school year starting. Take care,

I have a couple of things to bring to your attention.

First, please keep Jess Lewis, Oregon State wrestling and football legend, in your thoughts and prayers. Jess is going through a rough patch. He is currently in the hospital after suffering a stroke. They are hoping to be able to release him soon to rehab. Hang tough, Jess!
Next, I am forwarding a message from Coach Kevin Roberts. The Wrestling All-Star Classic will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary this fall and are hoping to put on  a special event for this milestone. They are inviting  all former participants to join them and have information on how to do so.

Next, I am forwarding a message from Coach Kevin Roberts. The Wrestling All-Star Classic will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary this fall and are hoping to put on  a special event for this milestone. They are inviting  all former participants to join them and have information on how to do so.

Subject: NWCA All Star Classic

Kevin,

I am the President of the Atlanta Wrestlers in Business Chapter and we are hosting the NWCA All Star Classic on November 1, 2015.  I want to do something special to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Classic.  I’ve received a list of all the competitors who participated over the past 50 years, and I want to honor those who attend with a private celebration luncheon and two reserved tickets to the event.  We have discounted airline tickets with Delta and a special rate at the hotel within walking distance.  As the host of the event, we want the athletes from your university to have the opportunity to be honored at the Classic.  Without your help they will not know that we intend on honoring them.  It would be a shame if they missed this opportunity.  I hope you will have someone on your staff follow up with me so we can send them a proper invitation.

Below is the list of wrestlers from your university who participated in the Classic over the years.  I want to send them a personal letter requesting their attendance.  I have attached a draft of the letter for your review.  Can you please get your assistant to share with me their home address or email address so I can them a personal invitation to the All Star Classic?
