NCAA Final Wrap Up

The Div. I NCAA wrestling season came to a conclusion tonight with the finals crowning the individual champions. Ohio State had claimed the team title before the finals even began. Logan Stieber of Ohio State made history by becoming only the 4th person to win 4 NCAA championships. Logan joins Pat Smith, Cael Sanderson and Kyle Dake in that elite group.

The Oregon State contingent returns with memories and lessons learned for the three freshman and one junior who participated along with the three seniors. As a fan, I am already looking forward to next year!
But don't forget, we still have a lot of things to celebrate from this season, and we'll do just that at the Awards Banquet. Make sure you have Saturday, April 25th saved on your calendar for the banquet!

Now for a couple of things to wrap up the NCAA's. If you haven't already seen Scott Nelson's latest article on the Beavers at OregonLive, be sure to read it here. Mr. Nelson always does a great job writing up wrestling events! A big thank you to him! Really, his main beat at the Oregonian is business. His attention to wrestling is due to his love of the sport and the lack of any attention from anywhere else. We in the wrestling community are very grateful for his efforts!

Oregon State's Season Ends

157 Alex Elder celebrates his fall
2014-15 has been a memorable season for the Beavers, but unfortunately it has come to an end.

The last three Oregon State wrestlers standing, Alex Elder, Joe Latham and Taylor Meeks, were all defeated in the consolation rounds this evening, all at that oh-so-close step. Just one more win and you would be All-American, one more loss and your tournament is over. Someone wins and someone loses, and luck and circumstance just weren't on our side this time.

Friday Morning at The NCAA's

Friday morning at the NCAA's can be brutal. The good news - we still have 3 guys left to wrestle Friday night! The bad news, we lost some along the way.

Congratulations to 157 Alex Elder, who picked up two victories this morning, the second by fall! Alex is grinding his way through the consolation bracket, keep up the good work, Alex!

Both 174 Joe Latham and 184 Taylor Meeks will join Alex in the consolation brackets tonight. Joe and Taylor both lost their matches in the quarter finals in the morning. As long as they keep winning, they can end up as high as third.

125 Ronnie Bresser III (listed in the tournament as Ronnie Rios), won his first match in the consolations, but then lost the next. Cody Crawford had a similar result. Ronnie and Cody have both been eliminated, but scored some points for the team before they exited.

Session I Complete!

Session I at the Scottrade Center is complete and the Beavers are sitting in a 5-way tie for 16th with 5 points overall! A good start to the weekend!
Both of Oregon State's seeded wrestlers, 125 Ronnie Bresser III and 184 Taylor Meeks won their matches, Bresser by decision and Meeks by Major Decision. All seven wrestlers are still alive in the brackets, as 133 Jack Hathaway, 157 Alex Elder and 165 Seth Thomas dropped into the Consolations and will be up this evening to get another shot at progressing. Bresser, Latham, Meeks and Crawford also wrestle tonight in the next step of the Championship bracket.
I forgot to mention earlier that TrackWrestling is also covering the tournament. You can find the link to Track here. Go to the top right side of the page under Division 1 and click on "tournament link".

One way we found to work well is to use Track's dashboard to see who is coming up next and which mat they will be on. Then you can quickly change to the correct mat on ESPN3.

Beavers - Pac-12 Champions!! - March 1, 2015

The balloons are bagged up and gone, the confetti swept up and the lights are out. The Beavers are the Pac-12 Wrestling Champions for the 4th year in a row!!
For those of you who weren't able to be there, wish you could have been, it was a whole heck of a lot of fun! The Beavers came out in Session I and let it be known that they were not about to give up that team title. They finished it off in grand fashion in Session II with 139.5 points, leading number 2 ASU by more than 30 points.

It's a short bracket with only six wrestlers at each weight, but all the Beavers made it to the Semi-finals. From there, eight made it to the finals. No one finished lower than 3rd.

I'll let you read what the sports writers have to say, but first let me congratulate the team:
Champions:
125 - Ronnie Bresser III
133 - Jack Hathaway
157 - Alex Elder
174 - Joe Latham
197 - Cody Crawford
Second Place:
149 - Abraham Rodriguez
165 - Seth Thomas
184 - Taylor Meeks
Third Place:
141 - Devin Reynolds
285 - Nate Keeve - Nate must have spent more time on the mat than anyone. He had 3 matches and all went into overtime, one a double tie-breaker!

Congratulations to one and all!!
And one of the best parts of the day was the announcement of the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament - Joe Latham! Way to go, Joe! An incredible day for Joe, a great way to finish off his season and career!
Now, for all the details:
you can watch the video recap by the Pac-12 video team here

Written articles:
Oregon State article - you can find a link to the completed brackets here, just look in the box on the right hand side of the page
Corvallis Gazette Times article - also has some nice photos of Ronnie, Alex and Cody
Statesman Journal article - more photos of Alex and Cody, plus a link at the bottom of the page to short video interview of Alex Elder

More recaps and other analysis can be found at the Pure Orange Forum
Just to finish off something I don't remember seeing elsewhere, other awards given out - Student Athlete of the Year - Chace Eskam of ASU, and fastest pin (apparently no one had more than one) went to Cody Dixon of BSU with one fall in 21 seconds.
Once more, congratulations to the Oregon State wrestling team and Head Coach Jim Zalesky and his coaching staff - Pac-12 Wrestling Champions for 2015!!
Next up, a rest and then practice for the season finale, the NCAA's in St Louis!!
Go Beavs!!!
