Las Vegas Results, Recruiting News & a Goodbye

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

A group of Oregon State wrestlers - and at least one former Beaver/former Volunteer Assistant Coach -  just finished a long weekend of wrestling in Las Vegas at the US Nationals. They met with varying amounts of success. FloWrestling is not quite as easy as TrackWrestling to gather data from, but this is the short version of what I found:

Las Vegas Results:
Devan Turner- Senior freestyle 61kg - won 2 matches

Josh Reyes- senior freestyle 65kg - won 1 match

Adam Rateb- Senior Greco 87kg and Senior Freestyle 86kg - participant

Jamarcus Grant- Senior Freestyles 92kg  - participant

Christian Robertson- Senior Freestyle 125kg - participant

Brandon Kaylor- UWW Junior freestyle 57kg - won 2 matches

Riley Gurr- UWW Junior Freestyle 65kg - won 5 matches

Logan Meek- UWW Junior Freestyle 70kg - won 2 matches

Dracius McKee- UWW Junior Greco  72kg and Freestyle 74kg - won 5 matches, took 6th place

Jackson McKinney- UWW Junior Freestyle 86kg - won 3 matches

JJ Dixon- UWW Junior Freestyle 92kg - won 3 matches

Hayden Still- UWW Junior Freestyle 125kg - participant

Tristan Osborn- UWW Junior Freestyle 125kg - won 1 match

The two wrestlers with the most success were Drake McKee who won 6th place in Junior Greco Roman with 5 wins. Also winning 5 matches  was Riley Gurr in Junior Freestyle. If I read it correctly, Riley was one win from placing as he started out in a field of 64, while Drake started in a field of 32.  Congratulations to both!

The person with the best outcome was Joey Palmer, former Oregon State wrestler and former Volunteer Assistant Coach to the Beavers. Joey came in third in Senior Freestyle at 61 kg. Congratulations, Joey!! That should give Joey an automatic berth in the upcoming World Team Trials. All the way next time, Joey!

A thank you to Craig Scharer for alerting me to the fact that Joey Palmer was participating.

Recruiting  News
In case it slipped past your attention, a few more recruits were announced via Twitter last week. The newest additions to the Oregon State team are Russel Stigall and his older brother Lane Stigall of Aurora, Oregon. The Stigall brothers wrestled for North Marion High School. Lane will be transferring from Missouri to Oregon State. From Sherwood, Oregon, the last signee was Gaven Jolley. Gaven wrestled  for Sherwood HS. Welcome, Russel, Lane and Gaven!

Don't forget to check the Oregon State Wrestling Twitter page now and then during the summer, in case more news should come out.

"Dam Proud Day of Giving"
Right now there is a big reminder on Twitter about the "Dam Proud" Day of Giving on April 30th. The Oregon State wrestling Alumni who are in charge of Wrestling's share are Curt Willener '04 and Ron Sather '74. Check the Twitter site for their contact information.

A Goodbye
Finally, since the FALL Board is having a transition meeting on Monday, this is likely my last email as the Secretary of "The FALL". It is difficult for me to quit on anything, even work, so this part is a bit hard for me.

It has been a pleasure working with all of the Board members, past and present, beginning with Howard & Jeannine Horton, my husband Jack and Dennis Fuller and ending with the current crew - Jana, Michael, Craig, Reynold & Jennifer. The coaching staff  - both under Joe Wells and Jim Zalesky - have been very supportive of the booster club. Thank you to all of you.

I have really enjoyed the years I have spent writing to all of you, trying to keep you informed on what is happening with the Oregon State wrestling program. Some of you I came to think of as "pen pals". I do think of all of you as my friends. Thank you to all of you who have encouraged me with kind words. You kept me going.

I will probably continue to find some opportunity to help out along the way, but it is time for a break. I look forward to seeing this job carried on into the future by more volunteers who will shape it with their own ideas.

Of course, Jack & I will continue on as fans. Come next fall, we will be occupying "our spot" over in the bleachers behind the announcer's table.  See you in Gill!

Greetings Beaver Wrestling Alumni and Friends,
On Tuesday, April 30th, Oregon State University will introduce the first-ever university-wide Day of Giving branded Dam Proud Day. Alumni and friends of Oregon State will be asked to support many campus wide initiatives that day by giving gifts to their respective college, academic unit or the Athletics Department. OSU Athletics will play an active role in this day of giving by asking student-athlete alumni to show they are Dam Proud by making a gift to the sport they participated in while at OSU. Gifts to our Wrestling program will:
  • Support our annual operations budget which includes recruiting expenses
  • Improve equipment and mats that get used on a regular basis
There is a lot of excitement here in Corvallis about OSU Dam Proud Day and on April 30 I will be in touch with information that will enable you to support our program through an online gift. If you would prefer to mail a check or make a donation over the phone, please contact me or the Our Beaver Nation office (541-737-2370).  As a former OSU Wrestler, we hope youll support us on April 30th! If you have questions or would like to get involved, please reach out to me.  I look forward to sharing the results from Giving Day in the weeks to come.
The link below will take you to a short video and the donation website.

Wrestling Awards Presented At Banquet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Banquet table awaiting the guests

So you thought I was retired? Ha! Still have at least one more email to send, or maybe a few more before someone else picks up the reins.

The 2018-19 Awards were given out at the Banquet Saturday night following a delicious dinner of jumbo shrimp, twice baked potatoes, chicken, beef and all the trimmings.
dinner in the Club

The first Awards were handed out by "The FALL" Club President Reynold Gardner. FALL Club Volunteers of the Year were Brett Waner and Jack DeAngelis. These two husbands of Board members are often pressed into service, usually in the background where no one sees what they do, but it is all much appreciated!! I can vouch for Jack, he's been helping me with computers and other technical issues, as well as hauling boxes, for years!

Next up, the Wrestling Awards, presented by Coaches Taylor Meeks and Ian Miller:
Coaches Appreciation - Joseph DeMatteo, Kegan Calkins
Highest GPA - Aaron  Olmos (3.6)
Hardest Worker  - Josh Reyes
Joe Wells "Team Impact" - Grant Willits
Chad Flack "Most Improved" - Bob Coleman
LenKauffman/Larry Bielenberg "Most Pins" - Connor Noonan (12 this year - Connor has an 83% pin ratio for his career)
Bill Brickey "Most Dedicated" -  Amar Dhesi
Dale Thomas "Hustle" - Hunter Willits  (the Hustle award is based on a calculation of GPA and wins, a combination of scholarship and athleticism.)
Robin Reed "Outstanding Wrestler" - Amar Dhesi and Ronnie Bresser

The Awards were followed by short speeches by our seniors, Bob Coleman, Joseph DeMatteo, Zach Evens, Rodney Williams, Josh Reyes, Kegan Calkins and Ronnie Bresser. Amar Dhesi has already moved back to Canada, so he was not present for the Banquet. I will be posting videos of their speeches to YouTube and including the links in this email when it becomes a post to the blogsite.

Once the seniors had finished their say, there was a short video recap of the season. The team was boisterously enjoying the video, providing sound effects to the on-screen efforts when the video suddenly hung-up. Unfortunately, the video couldn't be revived there until the program moved on. If you would like to watch that video, you can see it here.

Kegan Calkins followed up with a short tale that amused the audience before giving way to Head Coach Jim Zalesky who gave his traditional wrap-up  report. Coach Zalesky admitted the year started slow and just a few more wins, or even points, would have changed the entire picture. He challenged the team to aim high and make up the difference. He's already looking forward to next year (as most of us are.)

That brought the evening to a close, with a few more remarks by retiring FALL Club President Reynold Gardner reminding everyone that with four retirements from the Board - Reynold & his wife Jennifer Gardner, Craig Scharer and myself, The FALL Board is looking for some good people with some time to spare. The FALL Fan Club works hard to win more fans for the sport of wrestling at Oregon State and to make things fun for the fans that are there. Anyone with any ideas to share or a desire to work for the benefit of wrestling, contact me, Michael Denison or Jana Iwasaki. Thank you!

Thank you to those folks who donated extra to help put on the Banquet -

Darryl Christian & Gary Westfjord, who offered $500 in memory of Ron Finley
And -
Ron & Linda Iwasaki
John & Bonnie Dustin
Bob & Denise Tomasovic
Craig Scharer
Jana Iwasaki & Brett Waner
Jo Overton
Chancy Ball & Mary Bliven
Thank you for your generosity!

Thank you to all who came and helped us celebrate our 2018-19 Oregon State Wrestling team!

One request, if you took any photos you would like to share through The FALL's blog, please send them and I will post them, you'll get photo credits. If you happened to be one of those who got the group picture of the guys in the back of the room after the event, I'd really like to get a copy to share on the Blogsite!

One other item from the OSU newsroom, Aaron Olmos was named  one of the Student Athletes for the month of April, along with Halli Briscoe of Gymnastics. Congratulations, Aaron!

Coming up - a group of Beavers will be heading to Las Vegas for the Nationals in Freestyle and Greco. When I learn more about that, I will pass it along.

Happy Easter! Go Beavs!

Videos From the Banquet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

One of the parts of the program at the Annual Wrestling Awards banquet is the Recognition of the Seniors on the team. Each of the seniors has the opportunity to get up and give a speech about their time on the team, their future plans and any words of advice they might have for the younger members of the team.

Not all the parents were able to attend. We didn't come up with a way to live-stream the event, so I decided to try getting a video of each speech. So if you missed the Banquet, or just would like to watch again, here they are.

The videos are posted on YouTube. The sound is a bit on the quiet side, but that's probably because this was done on my small camera with no special microphone equipment. These links will take you to the video at YouTube.

Thanks again, guys, for all your years spent wrestling for Oregon State!

And if you missed the video wrap-up of the season made by Oregon State, here it is on YouTube.

Banquet Seats, An Award & News

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Banquet
If there is anyone out there who would still like to come to the Banquet on Saturday, April 13, we have six available seats at the tables. They are open on a first come first served basis, but you have to let me know by email to get your name on the list. Seats are $35 each. Dinner begins at 6:00.Thank you!

Award
Now for an Award that kind of got passed over in the news, except by Craig Scharer and other observant folks. The Pac-12 recently announced their season ending awards. One of those awards, the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year went to Oregon State's Grant Willits - Pac-12 141 Champion! Congratulations, Grant! You can read the entire article at the Pac-12 site. Grant is only the third Beaver to receive the Newcomer of the Year Award from the Pac-12. Okay, Grant, next award to shoot for - the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year Award!

News
This one is a memory test for Beaver wrestling fans. Remember the name Paul Rademacher? You'll have to search your late 90's, early 2000's memory banks for the answer, a Joe Wells wrestler. Paul recently made the news. He was hired as Coach for the new Women's Wrestling team at Indiana Tech. Congratulations, Paul! You'll find the story at Intermat. Thanks also to Craig Scharer for sending me this link.

Bob Newton's Obituary & Banquet Note

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Bob Newton

Since long time wrestling fan and FALL Club member Bob Newton passed away during the hub-bub of the NCAA's, some of you may have missed the notice about him in my emails. In the meantime, his full obituary was published in the local paper this past week. For any who want to read more about Bob's long, full life, the story appeared in the Corvallis Gazette Times. Bob will definitely be missed. Rest in Peace, my friend.

The Awards Banquet is almost here! Next Saturday, April 13 is the date. Location is the Club in Reser Stadium (same place we've held the Socials.) Doors open at 5:00 (if you come earlier you will be put to work!) Dinner begins at 6:00, the program follows.

Don't forget, there will be some great door prize materials and some really nice Silent Auction items. If you were at the last Socials you will have seen some. Remember the beautiful rose colored wood Benny  Beaver plaque along with some wrestling posters? They will be there! Don't forget to bring your checkbook or credit card!

We have our numbers set with the caterer, but we always order a little extra room for last minute people. We have about 6 seats available ($35 each). First come, first served. Beyond that we could do a waiting list for any cancellations.

If you would like to come, just let me know ASAP, and we'll try to get you in. Thank you!
