Las Vegas Results, Recruiting News & a Goodbye

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

A group of Oregon State wrestlers - and at least one former Beaver/former Volunteer Assistant Coach -  just finished a long weekend of wrestling in Las Vegas at the US Nationals. They met with varying amounts of success. FloWrestling is not quite as easy as TrackWrestling to gather data from, but this is the short version of what I found:

Las Vegas Results:
Devan Turner- Senior freestyle 61kg - won 2 matches

Josh Reyes- senior freestyle 65kg - won 1 match

Adam Rateb- Senior Greco 87kg and Senior Freestyle 86kg - participant

Jamarcus Grant- Senior Freestyles 92kg  - participant

Christian Robertson- Senior Freestyle 125kg - participant

Brandon Kaylor- UWW Junior freestyle 57kg - won 2 matches

Riley Gurr- UWW Junior Freestyle 65kg - won 5 matches

Logan Meek- UWW Junior Freestyle 70kg - won 2 matches

Dracius McKee- UWW Junior Greco  72kg and Freestyle 74kg - won 5 matches, took 6th place

Jackson McKinney- UWW Junior Freestyle 86kg - won 3 matches

JJ Dixon- UWW Junior Freestyle 92kg - won 3 matches

Hayden Still- UWW Junior Freestyle 125kg - participant

Tristan Osborn- UWW Junior Freestyle 125kg - won 1 match

The two wrestlers with the most success were Drake McKee who won 6th place in Junior Greco Roman with 5 wins. Also winning 5 matches  was Riley Gurr in Junior Freestyle. If I read it correctly, Riley was one win from placing as he started out in a field of 64, while Drake started in a field of 32.  Congratulations to both!

The person with the best outcome was Joey Palmer, former Oregon State wrestler and former Volunteer Assistant Coach to the Beavers. Joey came in third in Senior Freestyle at 61 kg. Congratulations, Joey!! That should give Joey an automatic berth in the upcoming World Team Trials. All the way next time, Joey!

A thank you to Craig Scharer for alerting me to the fact that Joey Palmer was participating.

Recruiting  News
In case it slipped past your attention, a few more recruits were announced via Twitter last week. The newest additions to the Oregon State team are Russel Stigall and his older brother Lane Stigall of Aurora, Oregon. The Stigall brothers wrestled for North Marion High School. Lane will be transferring from Missouri to Oregon State. From Sherwood, Oregon, the last signee was Gaven Jolley. Gaven wrestled  for Sherwood HS. Welcome, Russel, Lane and Gaven!

Don't forget to check the Oregon State Wrestling Twitter page now and then during the summer, in case more news should come out.

"Dam Proud Day of Giving"
Right now there is a big reminder on Twitter about the "Dam Proud" Day of Giving on April 30th. The Oregon State wrestling Alumni who are in charge of Wrestling's share are Curt Willener '04 and Ron Sather '74. Check the Twitter site for their contact information.

A Goodbye
Finally, since the FALL Board is having a transition meeting on Monday, this is likely my last email as the Secretary of "The FALL". It is difficult for me to quit on anything, even work, so this part is a bit hard for me.

It has been a pleasure working with all of the Board members, past and present, beginning with Howard & Jeannine Horton, my husband Jack and Dennis Fuller and ending with the current crew - Jana, Michael, Craig, Reynold & Jennifer. The coaching staff  - both under Joe Wells and Jim Zalesky - have been very supportive of the booster club. Thank you to all of you.

I have really enjoyed the years I have spent writing to all of you, trying to keep you informed on what is happening with the Oregon State wrestling program. Some of you I came to think of as "pen pals". I do think of all of you as my friends. Thank you to all of you who have encouraged me with kind words. You kept me going.

I will probably continue to find some opportunity to help out along the way, but it is time for a break. I look forward to seeing this job carried on into the future by more volunteers who will shape it with their own ideas.

Of course, Jack & I will continue on as fans. Come next fall, we will be occupying "our spot" over in the bleachers behind the announcer's table.  See you in Gill!

Go Beavs!
