Michigan Preview

We wrestle Michigan Friday night in Gill and we need everyone there to cheer our guys on and keep the refs honest!

Based on their last meet here's a preview of Michigan's lineup, all rankings are from D1-Wrestling.

125 Sean Boyle currently ranked #8.
133 Rossi Bruno (FR)
141 Camryn Jackson
149 Eric Grajales currently ranked #11
157 Jake Salazar
165 Taylor Massa currently ranked #18 (FR)
174 Don Yates currently ranked #15
184 Jordan Thomas (FR)
197 Max Huntley currently ranked #17
HWT Justin Dozier (FR)

I think we lineup pretty well with Michigan. My only real concern is that Michigan has a little more dual experience (2 meets) this year than we do. Key matchups will be 125, 149, 165, 174 and 197. Their 165 is a highly recruited freshman but at the end of the day he is still a freshman. As always when wrestling a good opponent bonus points will be important.

Show up, Cheer loud, and Support the Team!

Intra-Squad Recap

125
Joey Palmer (FR) defeated Pat Rollins (SO) 10-5 in a very fast and hard-fought match. Rollins made it to the round of 12 in last year's NCAA and is currently ranked #16 by D1-Wrestling.

133
Drew VanAnrooey (RS FR) scored a TF over Anthony Harris (SR).

141
James Roberts (SO) defeated Michael Mangrum 7-2. Mangrum was All American (4th) last year and is currently ranked #3 by D1-Wrestling. Roberts wrestled at 133 last year.

149
Scott Sakaguchi (JR) majored Jordan Henrickson (FR). Scott was All American last year and is currently ranked #6 by D1-Wrestling.

157
RJ Pena (JR) won by TF over Toney Chay (RS FR). RJ is ranked #9 by D1-Wrestling.

165
Alex Elder (RS SO) won by TF over Joe Latham (SO). Alex redshirted last year and wrestled at 157 the year before.

174
Austin Morehead (JR) won by pin over Cody Weishoff (SR). Austin is a transfer from Clackamas Community College.

184
John Tuck (JR) defeated Brian Engdahl (SO) 6-4 in a close match. Ty Vinson (SR) did not compete because of minor injury. Ty is currently ranked #17 by D1-Wrestling.

197
Taylor Meeks (SO) won by TF over Lucas Mondragon (JR). Taylor is currently ranked #11 by D1-Wrestling.

HWT
Chad Hanke (SR) did not have a challenger. Chad is currently ranked #8 by D1-Wrestling. Last year while wrestling unattached Chad beat the current #4 wrestler. I believe that because of redshirting last year for the Olympic Games Chad is currently ranked too low and will move up once the season begins.

3rd Open Practice _ Andew's Report

Last Saturday I finally made it to an open practice.  All these years as a wrestling fan and OSU supporter I never managed to get to one before this.  Well, it was well worth the trip and I doubt I'll miss another.

This was a particularly good one to watch, just days before what promises to be an exciting battle for line-up position at Wednesday night's Intra-squad Meet.  The first thing you notice walking into the wrestling room...the heat is cranked.  Then it rises another several degrees once the workout gets going.  Some of us in the stands started peeling off jackets and sweaters.  If we were a bit uncomfortable, I'm sure the athletes have grown accustomed to it.  By the end of practice most guys literally looked like they'd just climbed out of a swimming pool.  I chuckled at the splats and plops their shirts made when they struggled out of them for cool down laps at the end.

Running laps at end of practice
Once warm ups, brief review, and some hard drilling were complete, the live wrestling started.  And just...kept...going.  I honestly lost count of how many matches they wrestled, each with a new partner, and each ending with a sudden victory period.

Highlights for me included Meeks and Hanke battling in two separate overtime bouts.  Hanke scored in the first one, but it wasn't easy, and Meeks wasn't happy about it.  Never mind his considerable weight disadvantage.  A few matches later they met again, with a different outcome.  The other matches were finished and guys were on water break.  But Hanke and Meeks were still at it, neither wanting to lose.  After several close calls by each guy, Meeks finally got the hard-fought takedown.  Hanke was not pleased.

Another tough match somewhat unexpectedly occurred between Mangrum and freshman, Jordan Henrickson.  Henrickson is long and lanky which can often prove frustrating for a more compact wrestler like Mangrum.  It was the final match of practice, everyone but these two already jogging laps.  However, neither wrestler could gain the advantage.  Period time limits were abandoned as Coach Z called stalemate and reset the athletes many times.  I'm sure the jogging teammates wanted the match to end as much as the competitors did, when finally Mangrum locked up and put Henrickson on his back.  It speaks to the roster's depth when the highest ranked guy in the room is challenged by one of the newest guys on the team.  Joey Palmer is another new face that drew my attention with his work ethic and driven effort.

It was great to see thirty-some guys working so hard, for so long, with such sustained intensity.  The veterans and rookies alike.  I believe we are in for a big season, Beaver fans!

2nd Open Practice - Oct. 20

A view of the practice room bleacher seats.
Yesterday was the 2nd open practice held as part of the weekend homecoming festivities.

The team doing pushups at the end of practice.
The intensity in the room is definitely high and the team is working extremely hard. Practice lasts about 1-1/2 hours with warm-ups, drills, intense one-on-one matches followed by wind sprints and calisthenics. If anyone wants to join in I'm sure they would make room for you!

The most striking thing was the intense level of competition in the room. This is a team that is serious and believes that they are ready to step up to the next level. I was especially impressed by how hard some of the younger folks were pushing the older guys during the one-on-ones. I believe some of the young guys could  make the lineup if the veterans don't stay on their toes!

I am confident that this team is headed in the right direction and is on the verge of becoming one of the top teams in the country. I think top five is not out of the question along with Penn State, Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma. I'm serious, I think this team is scratching at this door. If I were the coach of any of these teams I would not want to wrestle us in Gill!

The team and coaches deserve our support so show up whenever possible, cheer loud, and let the wrestlers know how proud you are of them.

OS Wrestling Fans,

The 2012-2013 wrestling season is now "unofficially"  under way with the first of the Open Practices, this one unofficial, being held this past Saturday afternoon. Included are:the invitation to the Annual Parent/Fan Tailgater, the wrestling schedule, the Open Tournament schedule, (the tournaments not on the regular schedule, or available to all the wrestlers), and the FALL membership form.

One note on the schedule, the first meet with Boise will be held a Central Valley High School in Spokane, not in Boise.

OSU Wrestling on TV!

The following is re-blogged from the OSUBeavers site:

"CORVALLIS, Ore. –The Oregon State wrestling team will have two of its matches televised on the newly formed Pac-12 Networks this winter in addition to the Pac-12 Championships, which take place at the end of the regular season.
The Beavers, ranked pre-season No. 9 by D1 College Wrestling, will be on TV for their first home match of 2013, when they host Boise State, Jan. 5 in Gill Coliseum. Their second televised match will take place Feb. 9 against Arizona State, also in Corvallis.
Oregon State matches make-up half of all the live wrestling broadcasts on the Pac-12 Networks during the 2012-13 regular season, with Arizona State the only other school to appear on the channel more than once.
The Pac-12 Championships are hosted by the Sun Devils and will take place on March 2, in Tempe. Last year Oregon State finished first in the event taking home the school’s second conference title in three seasons."

Application for Membership - Contact Elizabeth

If you need an application or have a suggestion for the Booster Board, contact Elizabeth at oregon.state.wrestling.boosters@gmail.com. Also, we are still looking for volunteers to help with the socials and other club activities, no experience necessary!

Open Practice - Oct. 6

This was the first open practice for 2012. If you've not attended one yet you should definitely put the next one (Oct. 20, 4pm) on your calendar. Open practices are usually scheduled on Saturdays in October, 3 to 3-1/2 hours before the home football game so you get a chance to see the wrestlers practice, get something to eat then head over to the game.

All practices are held in the Sports Performance Center (2nd floor) next to the stadium, entrance is across the parking lot from Gill. Go up the stairs and turn right at the Legends of OSU Wrestling wall (below).

Entering the OSU wrestling practice facility you are greeted by Legends of OSU Wrestling (left to right) - Dale Thomas, Greg Strobel, Robin Reed, Jess Lewis, Les Gutches, Howard Harris - the doors to the practice room are to the right.

2012-13 Schedule and Corrections

OS Wrestling Fans,

The schedule for the up-coming season has been posted on the OS site:
http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/sched/orst-m-wrestl-sched.html

A couple of mentions about the latest update from the coaching staff that they wanted corrected. In the section about returning wrestlers, Alex Elder was omitted. Alex wrestled his freshman year, then red-shirted last year. In the names listed, it is Zach Cardwell who is returning, not his brother Caleb. Zach was a freshman last year. He was injured at the Southern Oregon Open and spent the rest of the year rehabbing. Both Alex and Zach will be looking to find a spot on the varsity team this year! Going to be some good battles out on the mat!

For those with slow internet connections, I put the schedule down below my sign-off.

Go Beavs!

Update & Banquet Info

OS Wrestling Fans,

The latest update from the Coaching staff follows below. One thing to make particular note of - the team and the Pac-12 trophy will be presented at the OS basketball game this Thursday, March 1. The game begins at 7 pm. If you can be there to help honor the team for all their effort, it would be great. Get together with other wrestling fans and relive the glory for a short time, and help root on the basketball team as well.

Another important note: Mark your calendar for the Wrestling Banquet the date of May 5, a Saturday, has been selected. (I believe this will be Mom's Weekend at OSU, but I'm not sure.) Time for the banquet has not be determined yet.

Once again, congratulations to the team and Coaching staff for a very successful tournament!

wrestling_header_02.jpgwrestling_header_03.jpgwrestling_header_04.jpg
Corvallis, Oregon- The Beavers returned to Corvallis last night with the trophy from the inaugural Pac 12 Wrestling Championships (and 19th conference championship in OSU history). There were many highs and a few lows like most wrestling tournaments.  Overall, THE BEAVS did a good job competing hard and wrestling aggressively. It is time to prepare for the tournament that matters the most and the one that we judge our season on.

Before anything else is said in regards to the tournament, the FANS and SUPPORTERS of OSU WRESTLING need to be recognized.  Orange and Black clad wearing folks of all ages and many locations made the trek to Boise and brought a ton of emotion and support to our wrestlers and staff. They cannot be recognized enough and their support was phenomenal. I think we had the largest contingent of fans in attendance, and without a doubt the most vocal.  The support of the fans, parents, boosters, fan club has been great and is a big part of building this program to the highest level. As you have heard before, the staff expects to get to the highest level in college wrestling. A conference championship is nice, but it is a stepping stone to what really matters. We had hundreds of fans in Boise on the same weekend as the Oregon High School State Championships. We are going to continue to build this fan base to become one of the largest and best in the nation. Thanks for the support!

Oregon State advanced six wrestlers to the finals, and came away with four individual champions. Michael Mangrum won a hard-fought overtime match with returning NCAA finalist Boris Novatchkov, with a takedown and near-fall for a 5-1 victory. Mangrum improved his record to 33-3 on the season, and heads to St. Louis with expectations of an NCAA title. Scott Sakaguchi dismantled the field at 149 lbs., with a major decision in the finals. He improved his record to 33-5 going into the NCAA Championships. RJ Pena won the title at 157 lbs. and also picked up his 20th fall of the season, to lead Division 1 wrestling. He defeated George Ivanov of BSU in the finals by a score of 5-2. At Heavyweight, Clayton Jack continued his march toward the NCAA Championships, with his second conference championship and improved his record to 35-1, with 15 falls heading to St. Louis. Every wrestler contributed to the scoring and the team championship. One thing we always stress is aggressive wrestling, scoring points and looking for bonus points.  As you can see by the team scores, every point matters.  In 18 matches won by OSU wrestlers, we scored 14 bonus points, which made a difference in the team outcome.  The way to beat the best guys and become a dominant program is to wrestle aggressive and hard, and getting bonus points pays off. Our athletes are getting that concept.  Besides, it is a lot more entertaining for the fans and a lot more fun than watching wrestlers try to rack up points. The complete OSU results are as follows:

125: Pat Rollins, FR, 2nd place
133: Garrett Drucker, SR, 3rd place
141: Michael Mangrum, JR, Champion
149: Scott Sakaguchi, SO, Champion
157: RJ Pena, SO, Champion
165: Cody Weishoff, JR, 5th place
174: John Tuck, SO, 5th place
184: Ty Vinson, JR, 3rd place, winner of true second match
197: Taylor Meeks, FR, 2nd place
HWT: Clayton Jack, SR, Champion

Wrestling To Be Honored At Thursday's Men's Basketball Game

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Pac-12 Champion Oregon State wrestling team will be honored during the second half of the Oregon State men's basketball game Thursday when the Beavers take on Utah.
The team will be honored during the second media timeout of the half, appearing on the Gill Coliseum court. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. PT start.
The Beavers won their third league title under head coach Jim Zalesky, and 19th in the program's history. Four Beavers - Mike Mangrum (141), Scott Sakaguchi (149), RJ Pena (157) and Clayton Jack (HWT) - won individual titles, the most for Oregon State in a single year since 1995.
Overall, the team is guaranteed of having seven wrestlers compete at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, March 15-17. Additional entries may be named as at large berths next week when the NCAA announces its bracket.
If you would like to join us- we will see you there. It should be a good environment to recognize our guys.

National Duals - Close, So Close!

OS Wrestling Fans,

The victory was not quite there for the Beavs in the second dual of the day, losing to Iowa  14-22.

Match winners: 149 - Sakaguchi by decision, 157 - Pena by major, 197 - Meeks by major, and Hwt - Jack by decision, Congratulations!

There were a couple of close ones that would have made the story a little different. Mangrum lost in OT, and Vinson gave up a lead to lose a close match in the final seconds.

My apologies to anyone looking for video, I just found out when going back to email from several fans that there was live video from another source, a little too late! Sorry, maybe everyone else found it.

http://www.livesportsvideo.com/golive/goliveevents.asp?q=NWCA

Remember that one for next time around!

Since only today's winners go on to the next round of the National Duals, I believe that brings OS's regular season to an end. Next up will be the Pac-12's in Boise, Feb 26.

Be sure to check the OS site for Hank's wrap-up: http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/021212aaa.html

Beavers Take Down the Cardinal

OS Wrestling Fans,

RJ started off the afternoon with a win for the Beavers, but then the Beavs dug a hole that got deeper and deeper until Taylor Meeks finally put a stop to the digging and turned it around.

The Beavers had majors from Meeks, Roberts, Mangrum and Sakaguchi. Pena and Jack won by decision. That made the final score OSU 22 Stanford 14. Congratulations to all the winners!

There will be a write up at the OS site:
http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/orst-m-wrestl-spec-rel.html
Check there for all the details.

Since Oklahoma cancelled our dual for next Friday, the next possible action for the Beavs will be an open tournament, the California Collegiate Open at San Francisco State in San Francisco. Not sure who will be heading down to participate. The varsity is off until Feb 12 when they travel to Ames, Iowa, for the first of the National Duals.

Wrestling This Weekend!

OS Wrestling Fans,

While the Beavers closed out the home meet season last weekend, they are far from finished.

This weekend will have a full slate of action, with the varsity team traveling to Boise on Friday and Stanford on Sunday, and another Open Tournament on Saturday for the others on the squad. Read all the details on the weekend's duals at the OS site:
http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/012512aaa.html
Note that according to that article, there will be live video for both duals, but no live stats.
Saturday's Open Tournament will be the Boxer Open at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon. Parents of Squad members, be sure to check with your wrestler to see if he is competing, as they are not required to be there. Not sure how we will find out the results. Track Wrestling does not seem to have this tournament on their list.

A few other items of interest:

If you are interested in tickets for the Pac-12's, here is information from Boise that was given to Craig Scharer today:

We have Pac-12's on sale right now. You can purchase an all session ticket for $30 for an adult or $20 for either of the individual sessions. You can buy them online, in person at the Athletic Ticket Office or over the phone at 426-4737. They are all general admission. Here is the direct link to the event:
http://idahotickets.com/subevents.php?subeventuid=49612fda85c98fb887fca69a96011506
They also stated that all tickets are General Admission.

Seems that the Beavers are making some noise in the national stats. Craig also sent this link to me
-
http://www.win-magazine.com/2012/01/edinboros-chris-honeycutt-among-leaders-in-many-categories/
Frank Johnson sent a file which I have attached for you. This article is about NCAA Div I pins. RJ Pena is leading the country with 18 for the season, Clayton Jack is tied for 2nd with 13, and Mike Mangrum is following along with 10. Congratulations, guys, keep up the good work!!

Don't forget, if you want to go to the Pac-12's, we are chartering a bus. This is not your high school rooter bus, it is a touring bus complete with on-board rest room. It's not Grey Hound. We will not be stopping at every small town along the highway, picking up strangers. We have a pick up spot in Corvallis, the Hilton Garden Inn, and Tualatin, the Rolling Hills Church. Both places are allowing us to park for free for the weekend. Travel in style, don't worry about the weather, be with friends and fellow wrestling fans! $70 per person Round trip for FALL members, $99 for non-club members.

We are planning a stop for lunch both ways, probably in Pendleton. Let me know if you would like a seat on the bus. Next week we will be considering the exact size of the bus, so make sure your seat is reserved! Questions?

Go Beavs!!

200 Wins for Coach Z!

Senior Garrett Drucker (center) and fans
OS Wrestling Fans,

North Dakota State made it a little more exciting than some of us were expecting, but in the end, Senior Clayton Jack chalked up a decision to make the score OSU 20, NDS 13. That gave Coach Jim Zalesky his 200th career win as a coach. Congratulations to Jim and the team!

It was also Senior Day for Jason Lara, Garrett Drucker and Clayton Jack. Jason's recent knee surgery had him out on the mat with crutches for the ceremony, but both Garrett and Clayton got to finish off their careers at OS with a final win in Gill. We wish them well with the rest of the season, still a long ways to go before the final whistle at the NCAA's.

For all the details of the meet, read Hank Hager's article here:
http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/012212aaa.html

Reminder, tomorrow the OS ticket office will begin selling their allotment of NCAA tickets. Call 1-800-GO BEAVS

Parents of wrestlers, get your tickets now, if you haven't already!! The ticket office usually holds some for parents and families, but this release indicates that they are ready to sell to the general public. So make sure you have your tickets or you may be out of luck.

Bus to Pac-12's in Boise - still some seats left, now is the time to sign up! Email me ASAP to let me know you want to ride with the fans. I will direct you how to make payment.

Oklahoma Cancels - This Weekend Last Home Meets & Senior Day!

OS Wrestling Fans,

As if the flood isn't enough bad news, Oklahoma cancelled their meet with us. It was scheduled for Friday, Feb 3. Apparently they had too many things on their schedule already.

That means that Senior Day will be this Sunday, Jan 22, the dual with North Dakota State.

Everyone try to be here Sunday to honor our seniors, Jason Lara, Garrett Drucker and Clayton Jack for their last home meet. There will be a Social following.
Season ticket holders will receive a refund for the cancelled event, see the details here:

Thanks to all who came in spite of the nasty weather. And a big thank you to the OSU Dance team who again came and added to the atmoshere.

A little wrestling tidbit, in case you haven't seen this on the Pure-Orange Forum, there was a nice article on themat.com about the Northwest Wrestling Regional Training Center, check it out: http://www.themat.com/section.php?section_id=3&page=showarticle&ArticleID=24556

Next up, our last home meet of the season, and Senior Day for Jason Lara, who had knee surgery this past Monday, Garrett Drucker and Clayton Jack. Come and give them a great Beaver Thank You for all their hard work over these past years!! That's this Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 pm versus North Dakota State. The Senior Recognition will be before the start of the meet, so make sure you are there a little early so you don't miss it!

There are quite a few of you who have not yet picked up your FALL membership packets, which includes your wrestling lapel pin and schedule magnet. Please stop by the table in the lobby of Gill before the meet and pick it up. Some of the FALL Board members will be out there until about 10 minutes before the meet starts. You can also get your packet at the entry to the Social over in Reser, which will follow the conclusion of the meet.

Wyoming This Weekend!

OS Wrestling Fans,
Just a few notes to get you psyched for the meet with Wyoming this coming Sunday.

Read Hank's article at the OS site: http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/011012aaa.html

Read OSBrawler's analysis of the possibilities on the Forum:
http://www.pure-orange.net/bscwrestling/index.html

Wyoming hasn't done a story looking forward to the meet yet, but you will find it here when they do: http://www.wyomingathletics.com/sports/m-wrestl/wyo-m-wrestl-body.html

An interesting story in the Corvallis GT appeared yesterday. Subject is encouraging, all about how wrestling is becoming more popular as a sport at the high school level:

Dual Meet Score 18.032.0

If you were trying to watch via the live-stream, it was a little frustrating as the feed was having problems and only finally came through during the 184 match, but the live stats worked.

Clayton had the last fall of the day, but not the first by the Beavers; Pat Rollins, Scott Sakaguchi and RJ Pena also won by fall, Mike Mangrum won by tech fall and Cody Weishoff won by decision. Congratulations to them and the team for the victory!

Be sure to check later for the complete wrap up on the OS site.

Next action, the Beavers will be back home in Gill!! Next Sunday, January 15, at noon, they take on the Wyoming Cowboys. Wyoming has a pretty good team, so we need everyone there to cheer on the Beavs to victory!

For Arizona's perspective:
http://www.thesundevils.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/010512aaa.html

Looking ahead to prepare for the end of the season, (yes, it's time already!), I've had some questions about tickets. Tickets for the Pac-12 Championships should be purchased from Boise. the OS ticket office will not be handling any of those. I have not checked with Boise to see if they are available yet. Has anyone else checked with Boise?

If you wish to sit in the Oregon State section at the NCAA's, you do need to purchase your tickets from the OS ticket office. They are still waiting for the staff and team families to determine how many they need before releasing the rest. They believe the tickets will be released about mid-week next week. I will let you know when I hear for certain. So if you are a wrestling parent, make sure you get your request for tickets in soon!!

Speaking of the Pac-12 Championships in Boise,
Sunday Feb 26, ...... We need to know who is planning to join us on the bus for a ride to Boise. Get your names in to me ASAP. We have a cushy tour bus lined up for the ride over to Idaho.
