Jan 19 - Zoom update

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Notes from tonight’s Post-Match Social which featured Coach Mike Kosoy, Devan Turner and J.J. Dixon.

The wrestlers shared that the focus is on giving each competition their all, “letting loose and having fun.”  They said they are better prepared with their proper weight descension program and also claimed to be better conditioned than their opponents.

Devan Turner shared about being introduced to wrestling when he was 5 years old, following his older brother’s footsteps.  Gym owner Chris McCoy in Dixon became a father figure to him and taught him confidence as an athlete.  He joined the Vacaville Youth program (he gave a shout out to alumni heavyweight Clayton “Jackhammer” Jack) and is friends with OSU lineman Jake Levengood who he tried to recruit for the OSU wrestling team.  Although he loved football, he realized that at his size, his future was in wrestling.  Over his career with the Beavers, Devan said he’s enjoyed the opportunity to travel and see different areas of the country.  He cited 2 memorable matches as a Beaver: beinstar-struck as a sophomore wrestling Steven Micic and also his first big win in Gill vs University of Northern Colorado when he was crowned Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week.

J.J. Dixon shared that the team is learning to have more fun with wrestling, but also that he’s working harder than ever.  He said that a favorite saying of the coaches is “Why not you?” meaning why can't you achieve your success.  Like Devan, he started wrestling at 5 years old, said his dad wanted him to stay busy.  He played football but wrestling stuck.  I think he said his club was called Sutter Weight Spartans, Coach Carfield coached him until high school.  Next meet on Jan 30 vs ASU, he will face Kordell Norfleet in a rematch – needs to keep wrestling and not give up.  His biggest match as a Beaver was the Norfleet match last year when he regretfully realized he “could have hung with the ranked guys.”  Another memorable moment was when they wrestled Michigan last year.

Updates on Beaver Dam RTC:

IMAR, Alyssa Lampe and Kosoy are getting ready for competition.  Olympic Trials are the first week in April and Isaiah is in shape and ready.  Valentine’s Day wine promotion fundraiser will be announced Feb 1.  Also, big announcement on signing another athlete which will be debuted soon!

Coach Kosoy summed it up that the wrestling experience is about competing by giving it your all…and leaving this program a man with a degree that you can use to be successful in life.

The Beavs have a bye week, and next up will be vs ASU in Corvallis on Jan 30.

Happy birthday to Coach P on Jan 21, which is also his baby’s due date.  We send love and positive energy to the P family for a safe and healthy delivery.

Zoom recap - Tues Jan 19 at 7pm

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Zoom recap on Tues Jan 19 at 7pm with Coach Mike Kosoy, Devan Turner & J.J. Dixon

Meeting Registration - Zoom

Thanks to my dad (Ron Iwasaki) for the following recap.

OSU 23, Cal Poly 17

125    After a slow start - Brandon Kaylor was taken down with a single leg, escaped and had his own TD.  He started up in the 2nd period, rode well and scored a 2pt Near Fall/Predicament.  BK easily won 10-6, but should have put more pressure on his opponent in the 3rd period.

133    Devan turned it on in the 3rd period and dominated his true freshman opponent, 10-2.

141    Grant gave us his typical entertaining performance but the initial scramble ended up with a CP TD.  After that episode Grant was able to reverse his opponent into a cradle but w/o any points, the first period ending 2-2.  He started down the second… quickly escaped but the period ended 3-2.  In the third period Grant got quickly reversed; escaped - then he fashioned a mysterious step through move that took his opponent to his back for TD + NF points.  However this wasn't a lock-down move and the match ended with both on their feet w/ Grant dominating 12-5 and another almost TD at the buzzer.  His opponent transferred from Fresno State.

149    Corvallis' Crescent Valley grad and Red Shirt Freshman Legend Lamer tech falled Riley Gurr 16-0 with a little less than 30 seconds left in the first.  After the take down Legend used multiple wrist locks and arm bars to turn and tilt Riley at will.

157    This weight featured the second appearance of brothers for both O.S. and Poly.  Hunter Willits in the first grabbed and then elevated Brawley Lamer's leg for 2 TD.  Hunter started down in the second, Brawley tried to put in a leg which Hunter elevated over his head for an escape.   In the last period Hunter started on top but quickly cut him loose.  Then Hunter got a takedown and kept Brawley down on the mat riding high on the upper body...duplicating Devan's winning score of 10-2.

165    Mateo Olmos started slow as the first ended 0-0.  In the final two periods Mateo and his opponent traded TD/escapes and ended 4-4 but in overtime Mateo prevailed 6-4.  As a side note, his opponent, Adam Kemp, also a former Fresno State wrestler is the son of three-time NCAA Champ Wisconsin great Lee Kemp.

174    Colton Beisley was quickly taken down, got an escape then his opponent bull-rushed him to his back.  There was no discernable fighting off his back and a fall was called in a little over a minute.

184    Ryan Reyes had a nice front trip for a TD in the first.  He ultimately won 4-2.

197    J.J. Dixon had his hands full with possibly the tallest wrestler any of us has seen in 6-ft, 7-in freshman Trevor Tinker.  Long limbs by his opponent invited both getting and being in cradle situations which J.J. initially converted a double leg into a cradle but no back points.  I guess you'd have to really elevate yourself over your opponent and anyway this exchange ended literally with an exchange (reversal).  Score ended 2-2.  In the 2nd, Trevor escaped then got ankle picked.  Later J.J. was riding too high and was reversed.  In the final period starting down and behind 4-5, J.J. reversed to win 6-5.

HWT    Hayden Still pushed around but was taken down and then to his back before being stuck at 2:27.

Cal Poly changed to 11am - Thurs Jan 14

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

I wasn’t able to join the Zoom call last night, so thanks to Craig Scharer and Elizabeth DeAngelis for the update.

Coach Nate Engel spoke about the team making improvements from week 1 to 2.

- Hunter Willits and Riley Gurr were the featured wrestlers who shared their thoughts on the weekend.

-Unfortunately, the team didn't have time to see the National Wrestling Hall of Fame while in Stillwater.

-Academics continue to be a focus, and the team has a better GPA.

-There will not be any fans permitted for the home duals in Corvallis, but the Athletic Dept is selling cutouts that will be placed for all Gill competitions (volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, gymnastics and wrestling).Beavers Gill Coliseum Fan Cutouts – FanCutouts

-Mat funding is close to reaching the goal and fans are encouraged to donate.

-There will be an announcement next week regarding the Regional Training Center.

The Little Rock and Chattanooga meets can be viewed by all for free on Twitter.

This past Tuesday, Coach P reassured fans that he sees improvement in the team and the athletes are excited to compete.  He advised that he is building a process-driven program, not a results-driven program and is undaunted being held to a higher standard.  During the Zoom call, Colton Beisley at 174 lbs was surprised with a scholarship.  Beisley, a redshirt junior from St. Helens, OR is pursuing his degree in Fish & Wildlife.  Hwt Brian Barnes reported working hard in all areas of his life including earning a 3.3 GPA last term, which he attributed to being motivated and supported by the coaching staff.  Freshman Mason Reiniche from Tennessee shared about never seeing the Pacific Ocean before coming to Oregon and mastering 100 pull ups in 7 min before receiving his team gear.

Beaver Dam Regional Training Center:

Check out the website The Dam RTC

Isaiah Martinez is getting ready for Team USA Training Camp and since he needs to be coaching the Beavers, they'll be flying in elite training partners.  Coach P also said they're about to make a big announcement...

Next week’s Zoom call is planned for Tues evening at 6pm.  The invite will be sent at a later date.

Reminder that we are not taking membership for The Fall this season.  Thank you very much to those who have reached out to me; however, you can continue to support the program with donations to the Oregon State University Wrestling Endowment Fund, Give to Wrestling
