Wrestling Update - Late August 2018

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

In my last email, the question of who won the Dhesi/Jarvis was mentioned. The latest email from the coaches answered that question - Amar Dhesi will represent Canada on their freestyle team for the World Championships.

Congratulations, Amar! From what I have heard, Jarvis was a "no-show", so Dhesi takes over the role. You can read more details in the Coaches' Update, which follows below my signature.

Be sure to read the Coaches' Update if you have not done so - lots of other good information in there. The Update includes the tentative schedule for the upcoming season, the Pledge for Pins and an invitation to the new event - the Orange Crush Benefit Dinner and Auction,  which will be held Oct 13 at the Benton County Fairgrounds.

Ron Iwasaki & Mark Hirota
Another item about former Beaver wrestlers - a photo of 1981 Pac-10 Champ for the Beavs, Mark Hirota, sent in by Ron Iwasaki. Ron introduced Mark with this statement: "A judo instructor in Portland -  Black Belt 6th Degree.  🥋  don’t mess w/Mark!" Thanks for sharing, Ron!

Meanwhile, some of the recruits are already on campus, getting adjusted to college life. School starts in a few weeks. the first of the Open Practices is expected to be Oct 6. Wrestling Season is coming!

Please consider if you would like to donate some of your time to support Oregon State Wrestling by being a FALL Board member. Several current members have announced their retirement at the end of this season. The FALL Club needs you!!

Wrestling News for August 2018

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Summer is rolling on by and that means the 2018-19 Wrestling season is creeping a little closer every day! A few items of interest have crossed my desk in recent days.

First up, the Board is getting ready to start work on FALL Club activities for the upcoming season. The Board could really use some new volunteer members! We need replacements for our Parent Reps with Ken & Andrea Tobin moving on with the graduation of their son Izaak. Anyone who is willing and able to help out would be welcome! It does help if you live fairly close to the Corvallis area, or at least in the Willamette Valley.

Next, Steve Thorpe, Sweet Home High School's wrestling coach and former Oregon State Wrestler was elected as chairman of the state chairman's committee for USA Wrestling. Congratulations, Steve! You can read more about it in an article in the Corvalllis Gazette Times.

Amar Dhesi should have had his wrestle-off for the top spot on the Canadian World Team yesterday, but I have not been able to find out the result.

Brian Engdahl and Ron Iwasaki
Ron Iwasaki sent a photo with former wrestler Brian Engdahl. Brian is following his dream and has taken a job as Head Brewer for Ancestry Brewing in Tualatin, Oregon. Way to go, Brian! Thanks for sharing, Ron!

Last but not least, the latest news from the Coaches. If you haven't read their newsletter yet, find it here, below my signature. One item from their note - Jason Lara has joined the OSU Coaching staff. Welcome back, Jason!

Greetings Beaver Nation,

We are right around the corner from the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, and we want to let everyone know whats happening.

Last Sunday, Aug. 12, some of our incoming freshman arrived on campus to begin the BEST program. Through this program, they'll learn studying strategies and how to balance their workload. It will help make the transition from high school to college much smoother.

In other news, Amarveer Dhesi will be wrestling this coming Saturday, Aug. 18, for the Canadian World Team spot. Taylor Meeks will be heading up to Calgary, Canada, to coach Dhesi.

Welcome Jason Lara! Jason will be joining the Oregon State coaching staff. He competed at Oregon State from 2009-2012 and was a two-time PAC-12 finalist and two-time NCAA qualifier. He currently runs the Orange Crush Wrestling Club. We are excited to have him joining us!
