Oregon State Wrestling Alumni Homecoming Meet - Jan. 3, Next Thursday!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans & Wrestling Alumni,

The next Home meet for the Oregon State Wrestling team will be next Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 pm at Gill. It is also the Wrestling Alumni Homecoming as well as the Joe Wells Classic. Coach Wells was an Assistant Coach at Michigan for years before coming to Oregon to coach the Beavs at Oregon State.

So, if you are one of the Wrestling Alumni, or even just know one of the many alumni, please listen up! A group of other alumni have made a plan to get everyone together for this next home meet. The following letter from Len Kauffman contains more information on what you can do to participate.

If you are not one of the former wrestlers, but know one or more, please share this information with them as well. We'd like to have a large crowd on hand to welcome the #5 Michigan team to Gill. The Beavers could use a lot of enthusiastic support from their fans in the stands.

Now, here's Len's message:
Gentlemen, Merry Christmas to you all.

By now most of you know of Ron Iwasaki’s (‘67) effort to increase the turnout for OSU dual meets...and that the January 3rd Michigan meet is being billed as our Wrestling Alumni Reunion Meet (what’s that….WARM in the winter).  At this moment 20 (including spouses) have indicated they will show up (see list below).

There are actually THREE activities that day that require a head count.  Ron Sather (’74) is organizing a pre-meet social at 4:00 pm.  He needs a count in order to pick an appropriate venue (his “man cave” at home or perhaps a pub in town).  At the 7:00 pm dual meet, we will have a section reserved for alums and spouses.  We need a head count to rope-off enough seats.  Thirdly, alums are invited to The Fall Booster Club post-meet social.  Those who are not members of The Fall can attend for $5.00.  The Club must have a head count in order to prepare adequate food.

Some of us are member of The Fall.  Those who are not are encouraged to join even if you don’t go to the meets/social.  They do a great deal of work to support our sport.

So, we NEED THREE HEAD-COUNTS:

Pre-meet social (4:00)

Dual meet (7:00)

Post-meet (~8:30)

And we need these numbers soon…before year end PLEASE!!!!  Send replies to both Ron Sather and me.  Looking forward to a good turnout…see ya on the third.

Beavers Bring 2018 to a Close

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Most of the Beaver wrestling team was in action somewhere today, the last day of wrestling for Oregon State in 2018. The starters had a dual in Fargo with #20 North Dakota State Bison, falling 31-13. A contingent of the squad competed at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Dual meet match winners were Ronnie Bresser (by fall), Grant Willits (by major) and Hunter Willits (by decision). Congratulations, guys!

Brandon Kaylor and Devin Turner both made it to the semifinals in the consolation brackets, but both lost there. Since the RTOC only awarded first through 6th places, neither were able to place as they would have been wrestling for seventh.

For more information, check out the articles at:

To see a short video of the team arriving in and practicing at Fargo, check the OSU twitter account
- if you scroll down to the beginning of today's posts, you'll find that video. For those waiting for the return of Amar Dhesi, you can catch a glimpse of him warming up with the team near the end. Thanks to the eagle eye of Craig Scharer for noticing and sharing!

The Beavers are now off until the Joe Wells Classic, at home in Gill on Thursday, January 3 at 7:00. This will be the OSU Wrestling Alumni Homecoming. So if you are one of the past Beaver wrestlers, please pass the word along to your fellow wrestlers and make plans to attend. The Beavers will be taking on #5 Michigan, they'll need all the support they can get from the stands!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Go Beavs!

Jackrabbits Leap Over Beavers At the Finish Line

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Ronnie Bresser's match in Gill

Beaver 125 Ronnie Bresser  started the afternoon off in fine fashion picking up his 100th victory with a first period fall. Way to go, Ronnie! The Beavers led 6-0 after that first match, but in the end, the Jackrabbits hopped away with a 19-17 win.

the new scoreboard
 Meet Details
The Beavers picked up the first three, all by bonus point wins. After Bresser's fall, Kegan Calkins added a major at 133. South Dakota State was without their returning NCAA 133 champ, Seth Gross, who apparently has been injured for most of the season so far.

At 141, Grant Willits won another Major after one of the most exciting matches I've ever seen! It alone was worth the price of admission. I don't know if there is any video out there, but the scrambles were incredible! He seemed at many times to have had the fall, but the referee was never in place to see it.

Then the Beavers hit a rough patch, losing the next three by decision. At 174, Colt Doyle won a dominant victory, trying to secure another Major, but missed it by 2 points, 8-2. That would be the final victory for the Beavers however, as they lost the last three matches.

For more details, check out:

The Beavers now have to step it up to meet even tougher competition, leaving on Tuesday to travel to Fargo for a dual with North Dakota State on Thursday, Dec 20. With the starters in North Dakota, members of the squad may go to the Reno Tournament of Champions (TOC) the same day, Dec 20. It will be a busy week for Beaver wrestling.

Alumni Homecoming at Joe Wells Classic!
A notice for all Oregon State Wrestling Alumni - the next home meet will be your Homecoming Meet. Please pass the word along to all your fellow alumni that you are in contact with, help us get the word out.

That meet will be Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 7 pm in Gill Coliseum.

Let's get a good turn out for the Michigan dual, held in the memory of Coach Joe Wells, a great ambassador for the sport of wrestling!

Need a Hotel Room for the Pac-12's?
Thanks to FALL Board member Jana Iwasaki for putting together a block of 20 hotel rooms in Tempe, AZ for Oregon State fans attending the Pac-12's. We'd like FALL members to have first crack at these rooms, so for now, if you are interested in a room for $119 night + 14.07% tax mostly double queens), let me know and I can fill you in.

A little later we will make these rooms available for all OSU wrestling fans, if there are any left. Jana said there are a few other options as well, she will be able to fill you in on that.

Again, congratulations to all the Oregon State match winners, 125 - Ronnie Bresser (100 wins!), 133 Kegan Calkins, 141 - Grant Willits and 174 Colt Doyle!

Beavers Start Dual Season With A Win At Home

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

It's always good to start the season with a win, and the Beavers did just that, on their home mat this evening. Oregon State defeated the Roadrunners 20-17.

Ronnie Bresser started the Beavers off with a major decision at 125, putting the Beavers into the lead 4-0. From there they led the whole way. Cal State  Bakersfield didn't give up easily, picking up wins at 133, 149 and 174. Meanwhile the Beavers bounced back, keeping the lead.
Grant Willits made his home debut at 141 with a fall in the second period. Twin brother Hunter Willits added more bonus points to the tally with  a major decision at 157. Aaron "Mateo" Olmos squeaked out a win in his home debut at 165, adding another three points to the team score.

When CSUB  won a major at 174 followed by a decision at 184, the score went from 17-7 to 17-14 and fans got a little nervous. With Corey Griego missing from the line-up at 197, Bob Coleman stepped in and pounded out an 8-3 victory. A pin at heavyweight for Cal would have tied the meet at 20-20.

Jamarcus Grant, looking a little like David in a David and Goliath match, stood his ground and took the battle to his opponent, almost pulling out a victory, losing a very close match. It was not enough for Bakersfield, however, leaving the win for the Beavers.

It was nice to see a familiar face on the opposing side, with the return of Chad Hanke to his old stomping grounds. Chad is in his first season as an Assistant Coach at Bakersfield, moving him back to the West Coast. For several years, Chad was an Assistant Coach at American University in Washington DC.

Fans gathered in Reser's Club for a short Social following the victory.

For more information on the dual, check out the article by Oregon State.

Oregon State's wrestlers will be back in Gill again next Sunday, Dec 16, facing the South Dakota State. Start time will be 1:00. More information will be coming out next week.

One note for fans coming to the next meet. Security at Gill has a new rule - no purses or bags are allowed unless they are transparent. So, yes, like a plastic bag. Apparently they sell a clear plastic purse at the Beaver Fan Store across the street, or a zip-lock bag will work. Otherwise, purses and bags must be either thoroughly checked or returned to your car.

Congratulations again to all the Beaver winners - Ronnie Bresser, Grant Willits, Hunter Willits, Aaron Olmos and Bob Coleman!

Go Beavs!

We are moving into the dual meet part of the season and looking forward to wrestling in front of our home crowd!
This coming Sunday, Dec. 9, we will host our first home dual of the season against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. The dual meet begins at 6 p.m.
