It's
always good to start the season with a win, and the Beavers did just
that, on their home mat this evening. Oregon State defeated the
Roadrunners 20-17.
Ronnie Bresser
started the Beavers off with a major decision at 125, putting the
Beavers into the lead 4-0. From there they led the whole way. Cal State
Bakersfield didn't give up easily, picking up wins at 133, 149 and 174.
Meanwhile the Beavers bounced back, keeping the lead.
Grant Willits made his home debut at 141 with a fall in the second period. Twin brother Hunter Willits added more bonus points to the tally with a major decision at 157. Aaron "Mateo" Olmos squeaked out a win in his home debut at 165, adding another three points to the team score.
When
CSUB won a major at 174 followed by a decision at 184, the score went
from 17-7 to 17-14 and fans got a little nervous. With Corey Griego missing from the line-up at 197, Bob Coleman stepped in and pounded out an 8-3 victory. A pin at heavyweight for Cal would have tied the meet at 20-20.
Jamarcus Grant,
looking a little like David in a David and Goliath match, stood his
ground and took the battle to his opponent, almost pulling out a
victory, losing a very close match. It was not enough for Bakersfield,
however, leaving the win for the Beavers.
It was nice to see a familiar face on the opposing side, with the return of Chad Hanke
to his old stomping grounds. Chad is in his first season as an
Assistant Coach at Bakersfield, moving him back to the West Coast. For
several years, Chad was an Assistant Coach at American University in
Washington DC.
Fans gathered in Reser's Club for a short Social following the victory.

Oregon State's wrestlers will be back in Gill again next Sunday, Dec 16, facing the South Dakota State. Start time will be 1:00. More information will be coming out next week.
One note for fans coming to the next meet. Security at Gill has a new rule - no purses or bags are allowed unless they are transparent.
So, yes, like a plastic bag. Apparently they sell a clear plastic purse
at the Beaver Fan Store across the street, or a zip-lock bag will work.
Otherwise, purses and bags must be either thoroughly checked or
returned to your car.
Congratulations again to all the Beaver winners - Ronnie Bresser, Grant Willits, Hunter Willits, Aaron Olmos and Bob Coleman!
Go Beavs!
