Beaver Wrestling Supporters,
Notes from tonight’s Post-Match Social which featured Coach Mike Kosoy, Devan Turner and J.J. Dixon.
The wrestlers shared that the focus is on giving each competition their all, “letting loose and having fun.” They said they are better prepared with their proper weight descension program and also claimed to be better conditioned than their opponents.
Devan Turner shared about being introduced to wrestling when he was 5 years old, following his older brother’s footsteps. Gym owner Chris McCoy in Dixon became a father figure to him and taught him confidence as an athlete. He joined the Vacaville Youth program (he gave a shout out to alumni heavyweight Clayton “Jackhammer” Jack) and is friends with OSU lineman Jake Levengood who he tried to recruit for the OSU wrestling team. Although he loved football, he realized that at his size, his future was in wrestling. Over his career with the Beavers, Devan said he’s enjoyed the opportunity to travel and see different areas of the country. He cited 2 memorable matches as a Beaver: being star-struck as a sophomore wrestling Steven Micic and also his first big win in Gill vs University of Northern Colorado when he was crowned Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week.
J.J. Dixon shared that the team is learning to have more fun with wrestling, but also that he’s working harder than ever. He said that a favorite saying of the coaches is “Why not you?” meaning why can't you achieve your success. Like Devan, he started wrestling at 5 years old, said his dad wanted him to stay busy. He played football but wrestling stuck. I think he said his club was called Sutter Weight Spartans, Coach Carfield coached him until high school. Next meet on Jan 30 vs ASU, he will face Kordell Norfleet in a rematch – needs to keep wrestling and not give up. His biggest match as a Beaver was the Norfleet match last year when he regretfully realized he “could have hung with the ranked guys.” Another memorable moment was when they wrestled Michigan last year.
