Wrestling Awards Presented At Banquet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Banquet table awaiting the guests

So you thought I was retired? Ha! Still have at least one more email to send, or maybe a few more before someone else picks up the reins.

The 2018-19 Awards were given out at the Banquet Saturday night following a delicious dinner of jumbo shrimp, twice baked potatoes, chicken, beef and all the trimmings.

The first Awards were handed out by "The FALL" Club President Reynold Gardner. FALL Club Volunteers of the Year were Brett Waner and Jack DeAngelis. These two husbands of Board members are often pressed into service, usually in the background where no one sees what they do, but it is all much appreciated!! I can vouch for Jack, he's been helping me with computers and other technical issues, as well as hauling boxes, for years!

Next up, the Wrestling Awards, presented by Coaches Taylor Meeks and Ian Miller:
Coaches Appreciation - Joseph DeMatteo, Kegan Calkins
Highest GPA - Aaron  Olmos (3.6)
Hardest Worker  - Josh Reyes
Joe Wells "Team Impact" - Grant Willits
Chad Flack "Most Improved" - Bob Coleman
LenKauffman/Larry Bielenberg "Most Pins" - Connor Noonan (12 this year - Connor has an 83% pin ratio for his career)
Bill Brickey "Most Dedicated" -  Amar Dhesi
Dale Thomas "Hustle" - Hunter Willits  (the Hustle award is based on a calculation of GPA and wins, a combination of scholarship and athleticism.)
Robin Reed "Outstanding Wrestler" - Amar Dhesi and Ronnie Bresser

The Awards were followed by short speeches by our seniors, Bob Coleman, Joseph DeMatteo, Zach Evens, Rodney Williams, Josh Reyes, Kegan Calkins and Ronnie Bresser. Amar Dhesi has already moved back to Canada, so he was not present for the Banquet. I will be posting videos of their speeches to YouTube and including the links in this email when it becomes a post to the blogsite.

Once the seniors had finished their say, there was a short video recap of the season. The team was boisterously enjoying the video, providing sound effects to the on-screen efforts when the video suddenly hung-up. Unfortunately, the video couldn't be revived there until the program moved on. If you would like to watch that video, you can see it here.

Kegan Calkins followed up with a short tale that amused the audience before giving way to Head Coach Jim Zalesky who gave his traditional wrap-up  report. Coach Zalesky admitted the year started slow and just a few more wins, or even points, would have changed the entire picture. He challenged the team to aim high and make up the difference. He's already looking forward to next year (as most of us are.)

That brought the evening to a close, with a few more remarks by retiring FALL Club President Reynold Gardner reminding everyone that with four retirements from the Board - Reynold & his wife Jennifer Gardner, Craig Scharer and myself, The FALL Board is looking for some good people with some time to spare. The FALL Fan Club works hard to win more fans for the sport of wrestling at Oregon State and to make things fun for the fans that are there. Anyone with any ideas to share or a desire to work for the benefit of wrestling, contact me, Michael Denison or Jana Iwasaki. Thank you!

Thank you to those folks who donated extra to help put on the Banquet -

Darryl Christian & Gary Westfjord, who offered $500 in memory of Ron Finley
And -
Ron & Linda Iwasaki
John & Bonnie Dustin
Bob & Denise Tomasovic
Craig Scharer
Jana Iwasaki & Brett Waner

Thank you for your generosity!

Thank you to all who came and helped us celebrate our 2018-19 Oregon State Wrestling team!

One request, if you took any photos you would like to share through The FALL's blog, please send them and I will post them, you'll get photo credits. If you happened to be one of those who got the group picture of the guys in the back of the room after the event, I'd really like to get a copy to share on the Blogsite!

One other item from the OSU newsroom, Aaron Olmos was named  one of the Student Athletes for the month of April, along with Halli Briscoe of Gymnastics. Congratulations, Aaron!

Coming up - a group of Beavers will be heading to Las Vegas for the Nationals in Freestyle and Greco. When I learn more about that, I will pass it along.

Happy Easter! Go Beavs!
