Wrestling This Week & "FALL" Membership

OSU campus scene
Now that the stupor of turkey is beginning to wear off (hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!) and there is a lull in the wrestling schedule while the guys get in their Dead Week studies, it's time to take care of some "FALL" Fan Club business.

Have you joined "The FALL" yet? There is still time! The application form can be found on the right hand side of this page under "Links". Download it, fill it in, print it out and mail it in with your check to Brandon Perkins our Treasurer. His address in on the application form.

The team will shake off the cobwebs and head for Las Vegas and the Cliff Keen Tournament at the end of this week. Here is the link for all the information.  Remember, wrestling will take place in the Cashman Center, not the Convention Center as in recent years.

Next comes Finals Week for tests, then it is back to Gill Coliseum for a dual with local CC powerhouse, Clackamas, on Friday, Dec 18 at 7 pm.

"The FALL" Board will be on hand to greet you in the lobby before the meet up to about 6:50. After the meet they will be in Reser Stadium, level 2 in the Loge for our first regular Social of the season. Member packets will be available at those times. The Social will be free to all FALL Club members, $5/person, $20/family for non-members.

Can't remember if you have joined yet? The following is a list of all current members who were paid up as of the middle of November. A big Thank You to those with an * by their name, they made an extra donation to the Club which always helps us pay for all the Fan activities!!

Don't see your name on there and you're pretty sure you sent in your form? Let me know and I'll have Brandon and Reynold Gardner (Membership Coordinator) check into it. Did we spell your name wrong? Let me know and I'll get it fixed.

Are you a former Beaver wrestler? Is your name on the list? It should be! Are your buddies on that list? Track them down and invite them to join! If former wrestlers aren't fans, who would be?

Congratulations to Joey Palmer for breaking into the rankings!

If you haven't checked the OSU site lately, here is the link to their latest story, including the ranking news.

Hope to see a lot of you in Las Vegas!

Another look back at the Duals yesterday with Rutgers and Utah Valley can be found at OregonLive, an article by Scott Nelson - read it here.

And since Mr. Nelson is discussing in his article the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas, you can find the Cliff Keen website here.

Don't forget, the coaches need to find out who wants tickets for the NCAA's in Madison Square Garden in March. Tickets are in the 200 level and cost $235 for an all-session pass. Contact Coach Troy Steiner if you want to get tickets. He needs to know by Jan. 1, which is coming up quickly. troy.steiner@oregonstate.edu

Beavs Drop Two Duals

Oregon State opened its home wrestling season today in Gill Coliseum with back-to back duals, hosting Rutgers at 11:00 am and then Utah Valley at 1:00 pm. In between the two, a couple of exhibition matches were held.

A fair number of fans were on hand to root for the Beavs. Unfortunately, the Beavers dropped both duals. Rutgers took the first by a score of 24-12, with the Beavers winning 3 of 10 matches. The second meet came down to the wire with Utah Valley picking up the victory 20-19.

In the dual with Rutgers, 125 Ronnie Bresser, 149 Joey Delgado, and Hwt Amar Dhesi were victorious. Bresser and Delgado won by decision. Dhesi's match was with #7 ranked Billy Smith. Dhesi was ahead by a wide margin in the third period when the match was called; Smith was disqualified by having 5 stalling calls, giving Dhesi a 6 point win.

The Beavs lost two close matches by 2 points to Rutgers, with Corey Griego losing to Nicholas Gravina 4-6 at 184, and Cody Crawford to Hayden Hrymack 3-5 at 197.

Before the next meet began, the two exhibition matches were held. The first was an action packed bout between 125's Kegan Calkins of OSU and Josh Patrick of Rutgers. Kegan won by major decision, 19-8. The second exhibition was at 165 with Beaver Kennen Lanteri and Rutgers' Mike Simmons. Kennen won a nail biter in OT 5-3.

Next was the dual with Utah Valley. The teams traded matches back and forth, each winning 5. Winners for the Beavs were 133 Joey Palmer, 149 Joey Delgado, 165 Seth Thomas, 184 Corey Griego and Hwt Amar Dhesi. Bonus points gave the win to Utah Valley.

Congratulations to all the Beaver winners, especially to 149 Joey Delgado and Hwt Amar Dhesi, the two who won both of their matches for the day!

The day was completed by a dual between Rutgers and Utah Valley. Rutgers won, defeating Utah Valley 30-9. Utah Valley won the 125, 174 and 197 matches. UV defaulted the 133 match.

For all the details, check the OSU article. At this time it has not been posted, but when it is, you can find a link to it here.

You can see Rutgers' story here.

The Beavs now have time to regroup and get ready for the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas at the Cashman Center, Dec. 4&5. "The FALL" Fan Club has no special plans for the Cliff Keen, but I know that a group of fans will be there. Hope that a lot of you will be able to attend, it's a great tournament with a lot of good competition! Come and cheer the Beavs on to victory!

Free Tri-Dual this Saturday!

OSU Dairy cows
The Beavers will open their home wrestling season this Saturday hosting duals with both Rutgers and Utah Valley. It becomes a Tri-Dual when Rutgers and Utah Valley finish the day by wrestling each other. Admission to the entire event is free to all.

Here is the schedule:
11:00 am - Oregon State vs Rutgers
1:00 pm - Oregon State vs Utah Valley
3:00 pm - Rutgers vs Utah Valley

All of the wrestling meets take place inside Gill Coliseum. Since Gill Coliseum is adjacent to Reser Stadium and there will also be a football game that day at 3:00, traffic will become increasingly heavy all day. The lots around Reser and Gill will be pay lots for the day. See the OSU parking map.

One alternative is to use the parking lot at the Benton County Fairgrounds, off 53rd, access by Reservoir Rd. For this Saturday only, the shuttle from the Fairgrounds will start at 9:00 am. It usually starts three hours before kick-off of the football game. Cost is $5 per person to ride the shuttle bus to Gill. The return trip is free. The shuttle will continue to run all day until after the conclusion of the football game.

If you wanted to camp, it is also possible to camp at the Fairgrounds' Oak Grove Campground, but I have no idea how full they might be. Check here for more detail. Entry to the campground is off 53rd Street, entry to the free parking lot is off Reservoir Rd.

For more details on the meets, read the article at the OSU site here.

For the view from the opposition:

Let's get a good crowd on hand to cheer the Beavs on to victory for their first action at home this season!

Parking For Saturday & NCAA Ticket Info

Minnie
The Oregon State wrestlers will soon be back out on the mat - this time for their home opener in Gill Coliseum this Saturday, Nov 21.

Last weekend was a step up in competition, and this weekend will not be any easier. The Beavers first face Rutgers, ranked just ahead of them, at 11:00 am. Then at 1:00 the Beavs wrestle Utah Valley. Fans are invited to stick around and watch Rutgers and Utah Valley face off at 3:00 to complete the wrestling for the day. Since 3:00 is also the kick-off time for the Oregon State football game in Reser Stadium, you have a choice. You can watch the visitors wrestle each other, or head over to Reser to watch the Beaver football team take on the Washington Huskies. You do need tickets for admission to the football game.

I had previously mentioned that "The FALL" might be sponsoring some sort of pre-Social tailgate for this big event, but with all the complications of time and football it just didn't work out. Our first Social of the year will follow the next home meet, with Clackamas on Dec 18, a Friday.

There has been plenty of discussion about parking for this weekend's tri-dual event, due to the traffic for the 3:00 football game. Things will be crowded and busy. OSU has come up with a solution for those who might not find a close-enough pay lot or don't want to walk a long ways. The following message from Coach Troy Steiner clarifies the parking situation. He also has included some information on NCAA tickets, so be sure to take note:

1. Parking for this weekend’s duals.  Parking could be an issue.  Parking will be available at the Benton County Fairgrounds for free. A shuttle will take you from the Fairgrounds to Gill.  Cost is $5/person to get on the Shuttle to Gill.  Admission to the Duals and return shuttle to the Fairgrounds is free. Shuttle Service will start at 9:00 Saturday Morning.

2. NCAA Tickets – Ticket price is $235 for 200 Level seats, the only level OSU has available for fans.   The Coaches need to get a list
by January 1 of people who want tickets.  They will not be able to get tickets after that, so if you want tickets through the Beavers Jan. 1 is the DEADLINE.  Contact Troy Steiner via phone or email for tickets, and he will place you on his list.
troy.steiner@oregonstate.edu

The Benton County Fairgrounds faces 53rd Street. To enter the parking lot, take 53rd to the intersection with Reservoir. There is a traffic light there. Turn west on Reservoir at the light. The parking lot entrance will be on your right.

Are you caught up on your reading? OSU has a new article - a couple of the wrestlers have moved up in the rankings - read all about it here

Scott Nelson has started up his wrestling articles for the season on OregonLive. You can find one article and links to the others here

Don't forget to contact Coach Steiner if you want to sit with your fellow Beaver fans in Madison Square Garden in March. Be prepared! And get ready to cheer the Beavs on to victory at home this weekend!

Good Weekend for the Beavs!

Oregon State Wrestling was represented from coast-to-coast today, with good results from both sides. The Beavs took two out of three duals at the Northeast Duals today, beating Northern Iowa and West Virginia after losing to a very good Nebraska team. Out West, the Beavs had five placers in the Roadrunner Open in Fresno.

Amar Dhesi at heavyweight had the best result, winning all three of his matches, including one over a #4 ranked opponent. Way to go Amar! It was a group effort as all members of the team won at least one of the three matches they had. Congratulations to the team!

For all the details, read the story at the Oregon State site here. One minor note, the story there got the final score of the OSU vs West Virginia dual wrong. The correct final score was 23-9. A glitch occurred with the program that was doing the live stats and it never reported the 184 or 197 matches. Corey and Cody both lost close matches in that dual.
The view from the other side:

On the other side of the country at the Roadrunner, Kegan Calkins, Jared Reis and Kennen Lanteri placed third, Ronnie Stevens fourth and Bryce Parson was sixth. Congratulations!

Results from TrackWrestling for all the Beavs at the Roadrunner Open in Fresno area as follows. Note some were wrestling for "Oregon State", the others for "Oregon State (unattached)", that's why they are in two different sets:

Wrestling Update - Nov. 11, 2015

This will be a busy weekend for the Oregon State wrestlers. The Beavers are sending a team to the Northeast Duals in Troy, New York, for competition on Sunday, Nov 15. Any wrestler not going to New York has the opportunity to participate in the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, CA, also on Sunday, Nov 15.
To find out more about the Northeast Duals, check this link. On that page you will see some posters. Click on each to see it in more detail. The posters show all twenty of the teams involved. One shows all of the different pairings for each team. To follow the action, go to the OSU schedule page and use the link on the right hand side that says "LIve Stats". That will take you to FloWrestling. Not sure if they will have video or just live stats. You probably need a subscription to Flo to watch, but I'm not sure, so give it a try. You can subscribe to Flo there as well.
To check up on the guys at the Roadrunner Open, go to TrackWrestling. They will handle the results for the Roadrunner.

Speaking of Trackwrestling, if you wanted to see the completed brackets for the Mike Clock, they are still there, but you have to do a search for them.
Go to the page at the Trackwrestling link, find "Popular Tournaments", then click on "More Tournaments" at the bottom of that section, then use the "Search Events" box on the page that comes up. Search under "Nov. 8", "Mike Clock Open", "Forest Grove", "OR". Then you can select which brackets you wish to see.

News from this week - the Beaver page has a new story about which Oregon State wrestlers are ranked, Amar Dhesi,  Ronnie Bresser, Seth Thomas and Cody Crawford. Read the story here.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Saturday, November 21 is the Beavers' home opener, a day on which we will have three duals - all free admission to everyone. The football game kickoff time has finally been set at 3:00 pm. The wrestling duals have been scheduled this way:
11:00 am - Oregon State vs Rutgers
1:00 pm - Oregon State vs Utah Valley
3:00 pm - Rutgers vs Utah Valley
The FALL is hoping to have a pre-Social Tailgate party, but it is still in the planning stages. I will let you know the scoop when it is all set.
Nov 21 will be a busy day with football traffic around the 3:00 game. Wrestling will occur first, so you will have a jump on the parking lots close to Gill, except for the most die hard of tailgaters. They are pay lots, but the duals are free; just load your car with fans and it will be a good deal! To find out more about parking at OSU, maps and details, check out this page.
Shuttle service starts 3 hours prior to football, so not in time to get to the first dual.
It's not too late to sign up for membership in "The FALL" for this year! Let's get a big group of supportive fans to cheer the Beavs all the way to Madison Square Garden! The deadline for getting your application in early to be included in the drawing for the gift certificate has passed, but all the home duals and Socials are still to come. Plenty of excitement ahead! You can find the application form under "Links" on the top right side of this page. Fill it out and mail it in to Brandon Perkins, our Treasurer.

It was a day of good wrestling. Lots of pins and tech falls, lots of intensity. It got a little confusing near the end for the fans as the announcers did not do a good job of letting the fans know when and where the matches would be, but  we managed to catch most of them.

To get all the details for the team, see the story at the Oregon State site.

If you'd like to see the complete brackets, they can be found at Track Wrestling. Go to the page at that link, find "Popular Tournaments", then click on "More Tournaments" at the bottom of that section, then use the "Search Events" box on the page that comes up. Search under "Last week", "Mike Clock Open", "Forest Grove", "OR". then you can select which brackets you wish to see.

Next up, next Sunday the Beavers head for Troy, New York, for the NE Duals. The rest of the team has an opportunity to wrestle in another open tournament, the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, CA.
Again, Congratulations!

Go Beavs!

Intra-Squad Results

Captains meet for coin toss
A fair number of fans were on hand to watch the Black versus Orange on the center mat at Gill Coliseum last night. It looks like the starting line-up is pretty well set, with only one match coming down to Over Time.

Coach Zalesky started things off with a drill match between 184 Corey Griego and 197 Cody Crawford. Coach Z later said that they had to work harder than all the others as Z stood by by with his time clock to keep them going the whole time. Corey and Cody did not have anyone to face off with, so the drill match had them exchanging practice take-downs and other warm-ups.

Next up were the heavyweights where Amar Dhesi won by technical fall, 25-10,  in the first period over freshman teammate Jimmy Millea

Things got a little tougher in the next match, at 125 where Ronnie Bresser was challenged by Kegan Calkins. Ronnie won in OT, 5-3.

Palmer and Stevens

At 133 Joey Palmer is back in the line-up with a major decision 10-2 over fellow Beaver Ronnie Stevens.

Next was an exhibition match between 2 incoming freshmen at 141, Alex Rich and Hans Rockwell. Alex took the match in a major, 14-2.

The main match at 141 was next between Jared Reis and Jack Hathaway, who moved up a weight from last year. Jack claimed the victory 9-4.

At 149 there were 2 matches as well. The exhibition match between Bryce Parson, freshman, and Izaak Tobin, redshirt-sophomore, was a high scoring bout with Bryce winning 18-11.

The main event at 149 saw Joey Delgado take on Jay Tovey, with Joey hanging on to win, 6-3.

One match determined 157, with Abe Rodriquez  settling in at a lower weight than last year, winning by major over Rodney Williams, 10-0.

More numbers led to 2 matches at 165, the first between Joseph DeMatteo, redshirt freshman, and Collbran Meeker, true freshman, with Meeker winning by major decision 14-4. OSU's only senior, Seth Thomas won by another major decision 16-2 over teammate Kennen Lanteri.

The final event of the evening - Tyler Chay vs Ali Alshujery at 174. It was close but Tyler kept the score 4-1 and walked off with the victory.

Congratulations to all the victors!

Besides getting to watch the wrestlers, the fans were also watching three referees get a tune-up. At least 2 new rule changes were visibly refereed last night. One - the call by the referee of the reason why the wrestlers went out-of-bounds, most all were "action" as opposed to being pushed, pulled out or fleeing the mat. The other was for "back points" on near falls. Two points are still awarded for a 2-count, but now instead of three, it is 4 points that are awarded for a 4-count. To see all the rule changes for 2015-16, read this NCAA document.

For more details on the Intra-Squad, check the Oregon State site.

You can also find a video recap of the Intra-Squad on that same Oregon State page, or go straight to the video here.

A short Social
program was held after the Intra-Squad in Reser Stadium. For the first time, the Social was held in the Loge on the second floor, instead of the Club, on the third floor. The Loge is a smaller, warmer space, more in tune with the size of the crowd we usually get. The food was different, as OSU has also changed vendors. If anyone who attended has any feedback, let me know, I will share it with the FALL Board.

Twenty or more of the team will be traveling up to Forest Grove to the Stoller Center on Sunday for the Mike Clock Tournament. Wrestling begins at 9 am and goes all day until they are done. Depending on the number of entrants, wrestling takes place in the main gym and in their wrestling room. So if you are there and tired of sitting, get up, stretch and head on over to the other room for a while.

There is still time to get your FALL membership application in by the deadline this weekend in order to be entered in the drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the Darden restaurant chain. The membership form can be found under "Links" on the right hand side of this page. Download it, open it, fill in the blanks with your keyboard, save it, print it and mail it in to Brandon Perkins our Treasurer.

If you need another good reason to send in your membership application soon - remember that the NCAA's, the grand finale of the season, will be held in Madison Square Garden. "The FALL" Fan Club has reserved a small block of rooms in a hotel  only one or two subway stops from Madison Square. They are available for Club members  on a first come, first served basis and are a reasonable cost considering the expense of things in NYC.

If you have already joined and are interested in reserving a room, let me know and I will tell you who to contact.

Intra-Squad This Wednesday!

Okay, folks, get your seat belts fastened, your seatbacks upright and your tray tables in the locked position, the wrestling season is about to take off!!

This Wed. evening, November 4, 7 pm the annual Intra-Squad battle for the starting positions will be held on the mat in Gill Coliseum. Admission is free. Who will represent the Orange & Black for the 2015-16 season? Who will be their back-up? Come and find out on Wednesday! Not sure who to root for? Cheer for any and all good wrestling! Be encouraging.

"The FALL" will be hosting a free Social in Reser Stadium's Loge following the conclusion of the wrestling. Coach Zalesky will introduce the team to the fans.

For those who have never been to a Social, it is easy to get there. Exit Gill and cross the street to Reser Stadium. You will be facing the long east side of the stadium. In the north end of that side, you will find a small gate that is open, a sign advertising the Social should be sitting out front. Enter through the open gate, turn left and go around the post to the elevator. Take the elevator up to the Loge, located on the second floor. Exit the elevator and you are there.

This Social will be free and open to all since we have not yet had a chance to get all our memberships in or put together membership packets. The program will be limited so as not to keep anyone out too late on a week night. There will be a no-host bar and a Nacho and Salsa Bar for a light snack. We'll have a drawing for a few door prizes. Come and join in on the fun!

Speaking of FALL membership - have you sent yours in yet? You can bring it along to the Intra-Squad, FALL Board members will be on hand to accept them. You can even pay with your credit card there.

The deadline for FALL applications is this Friday, Nov. 6. We'll still gladly take them after that, but to encourage you to get it done, we will have a drawing from those whose applications are in by the deadline for a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant! The lucky winner will be announced at our first regular Social, Dec 18, after the Clackamas Dual. The membership form can be accessed at the link found on the right hand side of this page under "Links".

If you want to review who will be vying for the starting positions, check the articles at the Oregon State site at this link

The first official action for the team will take place next Sunday, Nov 8, at the Mike Clock Tournament in Forest Grove at Pacific University's Stoller Center. Action starts at 9 am and lasts all day. Most of the team will be entered, but many will be wrestling unattached, so not wearing an Oregon State singlet. Watch for familiar faces and names.

Hope to see a lot of you at the Intra-Squad on Wednesday!
