Beavers Nearly Shut Out the Cougars 44-3

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

#3 Ronnie Bresser started out the dual with a fast moving Tech Fall at 125 pounds and set the Beavers rolling through the weight classes like a steam roller.  It looked like it might be a shut out, with the Beavers winning the first 8 matches, but Jamarcus Grant gave up a close one, losing 2-3.

An appreciative crowd of 594, including a section or two of raucous Clackamas fans, enjoyed the action. Again, the score does not indicate the competition witnessed by the fans.

In the second match, The Clackamas wrestler came out with an "attitude". He started with a fast take down and thought he was going to put on a clinic. Unfortunately for him, Kegan Calkins turned it around on him, finishing with a 19-10 major decision pounding.

The Clackamas fans quieted down some when that major was followed up by two falls at 141 and 149 by Grant Willits and Josh Reyes. At 157, Zech Bresser stepped into the line-up. That match was fairly close until Clackamas made an illegal throw, slamming Zech to the mat, causing him to be unable to finish the match. Another 6 points for the Beavers.

At this point in the meet, there was a pause to remember former wrestler and long-time fan, Phil Frey, who passed away earlier this week.

At 165, Colton Beisley was allowed to step in for Aaron Olmos. After a scoreless first period, Colton broke it open in the third finishing with  a 7-1 score, including riding time. Colt Doyle continues to improve, winning by tech fall in the third period in the 174 weight class.

Next Bob Coleman continued the Beavers roll with an 11-6 victory at 184.

At 197, Jamarcus Grant found himself in a 1-2 hole at the end of the first, pulled to a 2-2 tie in the second, losing to an escape the third. That woke the Clackamas crowd, then thinking they would win the last as well. Tommy Mommer gave the Cougar fans hope that they would win the last as well. Christian Robertson, filling in for Amar Dhesi, appeared much smaller than his Clackamas opponent. However Christian proved the old adage that " the bigger they are, the harder they fall", bringing the meet to a conclusion with a fall in the first period. Score: Beavers 44 Clackamas 3.

For more details, check:

Next week, the Oregon State team takes a trip to California, stopping first in Fresno to take on Troy Steiner's Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan 31 and finishing the weekend at Cal Poly with a dual with the Mustangs on Saturday, Feb 2.

Obit For Phil Frey & Wrestling Coming Up

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

First of all, a follow-up to the sad news of FALL club member and former Beaver wrestler Phil Frey's passing earlier this week. His funeral service will be held at St Vincent's in Salem on Saturday, Jan. 26.

His former employer, Chemeketa Community College, put out this statement about Phil (shared with me by FALL Board member Craig Scharer):
We were saddened to hear that Phil Frey passed away on January 21. Phil was the part-time wrestling coach from 1973-1976.  Phil served on the Chemeketa Board of Education from 1986-July 1997 and was board chair from 1993-1995.  In July 1997, Phil was hired as the Auxiliary Services/Bookstore manager until he retired in May 2012.  Visitation will be Friday, January 25 from 3-7 pm at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, 1350 Commercial St. SE, 97301. Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 26, 11:15-12 pm, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1010 Columbia St. NE, 97301; and graveside service at 2:30-3 pm at Belcrest Memorial Park, 1295 Browning Ave. SE, 97302.

Jeannie Odle
President's Office
Chemeketa Community College | PO Box 14007 | Salem, OR 97309

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Phil's family. He will be missed. May he be an inspiration to many young wrestlers as they see what they can accomplish in life if they are willing to give it a try!

Looking ahead, as I know Phil would want, the Beavers will be wrestling again at home this Friday at 7:00 in Gill. The Clackamas Cougars will be coming down to challenge the Beavers. Although the Cougars are in a lower division than NCAA Div I, they have been a perennial powerhouse in their division, so don't expect them to be a pushover. Let's get a full house to enjoy some exciting matches between the Cougars and the Beavers!

One note - the FALL Board members will be out in the lobby until about 15 minutes before meet start time. You can pick up your member pins if you have not already done so. There will be no Social following the meet this time.

For more information:
Check Clackamas' schedule and results to see how they have fared against their opponents

If you can't make it:

One final event coming up for the Beavers this week is the last Open tournament of the season for guys on the squad who chose to participate. This Saturday, Jan 26, the California Collegiate Open will be held at San Francisco State.

Beavers Can't Quite Catch Sun Devils

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The final score of 20-13 in favor of ASU does not tell the whole story by a long shot. The Sun Devils should feel lucky to have escaped Gill with the win!

Yes, the Beavers only won four of the 10 matches, but 7 of the matches had scores separated by two points or less. Three matches came down to Over Time. The Beavers picked up two of those - the wins by Jamarcus Grant(197) and Grant Willits(133). Two of the matches where the Beavers were outranked, they kept it very close and nearly won - Kegan Calkins(133) and Hunter Willits(157) nearly pushed through to victory over their ranked opponents.

The raucous crowd of 1022 fans had plenty to cheer about as both teams battled hard. It wasn't looking so good at the start as the Beavers lost the first four matches before finally picking up wins at 197, Hwt, 125 and 133.

Congratulations to all the Oregon State match winners, Jamarcus Grant, Amar Dhesi, Ronnie Bresser and Grant Willits!

For more details on the meet, check these articles:

Meanwhile a group of the Beavers' from the squad traveled up to Clackamas Community College for a tournament on Sunday. They brought home a handful of hardware:
Connor Noonan - first at 141
Riley Gurr - second at 141
Jackson McKinney - third at 184
JJ (Jarrad) Dixon - third at 197
Congratulations to Connor, Riley, Jackson and JJ!

While on the subject of Open tournaments, there is one final Open coming up. It occurs this Saturday, January 26. The California Collegiate Open is held at San Francisco State. Parents, if you want to watch your son wrestle, be sure to check with him first to make sure he is going. They are not required to participate.

A few other items in the news:
FALL Club member and former Oregon State wrestler Phil Frey died of a sudden heart attack yesterday. Please keep Phil and his family in your thoughts and prayers. May he rest in Peace. He will be greatly missed.

Many of you have asked about NCAA tickets. If you have contacted Coach Taylor Meeks about getting on the ticket list, he will get back to you with a number. Then when the tickets arrive, you will be notified. Then you contact the box office, pay them for the tickets and they will mail the tickets to you.

Speaking of the NCAA's, if you are still making your plans to attend, note the flier with hotel information. There are two hotels to chose between. If you are looking for hotel rooms for the Pac-12's in Tempe, AZ, contact me and I can send the information.

Don't forget, one more Home Meet this week, the Beavers host Clackamas Community College on Friday , Jan 25 at 7:00 pm. More on that later in the week.

There will be a Social following the meet. It will be held in the usual spot - the Club in Reser Stadium, level three. We will have a few snacks, door prizes, silent auction items and a short  program.

Hello Beaver Nation,

We are back from our weekend road trip to Northern Colorado and Wyoming. We started the trip off at Northern Colorado, where we won seven of the 10 matches. The final team score was 27-12, with Grant Willits, Colt Doyle and Amar Dhesi all picking up bonus points.

The next stop was Laramie, Wyoming, where the Beavers took on 12th ranked Wyoming. The dual score was 19-16 in favor of the Cowboys going into the final bout at 149 pounds. It came down to the final seconds, were the Cowboys took the hard-fought match 4-3. The dual meet was a back-and-forth battle, but the Wyoming Cowboys came out on top 22-16.

The team competed very well and is continuing to improve each week.

Next on the schedule for the Beavers is a home dual meet this Sunday against the Arizona State Sun Devils. The dual meet is set to kick off at 6 p.m. Please show your support by helping us fill Gill Coliseum!

Thanks for all of your support!

Oh, So Close!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

It was looking like the Oregon State Wrestling Team was going to pull out a tie, or maybe even a win in Wyoming today over the #12 Cowpokes, but it just didn't quite happen.

Wrestling began with the 157 pound match where Hunter Willits started things off right with a 10-0 major decision. after that, the score bounced back and forth with #3 Ronnie Bresser avenging a fall by Wyoming at 165 with a fall of his own at 125 over his #17 opponent. That actually put Oregon State ahead again 16-12 with three matches to go.

Wyoming pulled out two #12 guys for the next two matches, where Kegan Calkins gave up a major, tying the score at 16-16. Grant Willits lost by decision, 16-19. Still a chance for win or tie. Final match of the afternoon was at 149 and Josh Reyes got the first takedown of a low scoring match. He kept the lead into the middle of the third period, 3-2. However, Josh was taken down with a short time left and was unable to make the escape. Wyoming wins it 22-16, but it was oh, so close!

Congratulations to the Oregon State match winners: 157 Hunter Willits - by major!, 174 Colt Doyle, 285 Amar Dhesi and 125 Ronnie Bresser - by fall!
