Beavers End Dual Meet Season With A Big Win

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

It was Jim who won the Battle of the Brothers, Zalesky, that is, in Riverside, CA, with the dual between the Cal Baptist Lancers and the Oregon State Beavers. Lenny and Jim are the respective coaches of those two teams.

The Beavers won eight of the ten matches tonight, taking the meet by a score of 33-7 with a slightly altered line-up. Action started with the 141 pound match, where Kegan Calkins  stepped up from his usual 133. At 149, Connor Noonan took to the mat for the first time in a dual this season. At 157, Zech Bresser filled in for Hunter Willits again. From there, the line-up stayed with the regular starters. The meet concluded with the 133 pound match, where Devin Turner finished things off with a major decison for the Beavers.

Match winners for OSU were: Kegan Calkins, Zech Bresser (major), Aaron Olmos, Colt Doyle, Jamarcus Grant (winner by fall!), Amar Dhesi (winner by fall!), Ronnie Bresser and Devan Turner (major). Congratulations to all!

Cal Baptist's match notes (scoring details)

The Beavers are now off to rest up and practice for the Pac-12 tournament in Tempe, AZ at ASU, Saturday, March 9.

My apologies, I missed a link to livestreaming for the match. Craig Scharer emailed it to me, but I didn't find it until the meet was about half over. If you want to watch some wrestling tomorrow, Cal Baptist will be wrestling Bakersfield at 1:00. You can watch it for free.

Hello Beaver Nation,

Last Friday was our final home dual meet of the season, where we dropped a close match to Stanford 19-16. Some standout performances included #3 Ronnie Bresser picking up a big pin against #20 Gabe Townsell, Bob Coleman showing a lot of heart and pulling out a 11-9 win and Amar Dhesi putting on a takedown clinic to get a tech fall 25-10.

Friday night was also Senior Night, where we honored the following seniors: Ronnie Bresser, Kegan Calkins, Amar Dhesi, Joseph DeMatteo, Josh Reyes, Rodney Williams and Zach Evans. We are very thankful for their hard work and dedication to our program.

This week we are traveling down to Riverside, California, to take on Cal Baptist on Friday. Following the dual meet, our next competition will be the PAC-12 Championship on March 9 in Tempe, Arizona.
With the Oregon High School State Tournament going on this weekend, the wrestling staff wants to wish all competitors and coaches the best of luck!

Senior Night But Beavers Can't Quite Catch Up

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Seniors at the Social

The Beavers just couldn't catch a break, coming up short in a 19-16 loss to the Stanford Cardinal last night.

The first of of our #3 bookends, 125# Ronnie Bresser finished his home career in fine fashion with a fall, coming in the second period of a dominating match. Trouble was, seemed like the Beavers had to wrestle not only Stanford but also the referee. Instead of starting off with 6 points, the referee deducted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct. Not sure what match he was watching, because there was no such thing!

At 133, Devan Turner kept it close, but was unable to escape in the third period from the down position. At 141, Grant Willits turned in another great performance, picking up a 9-3 decision, keeping the Beavers ahead.

At 149, senior Josh Reyes had a match with one of Stanford's best wrestlers, ranked #15. Despite some injury time, Josh managed to kept his loss to a decision. At 157, Stanford picked up a major, pulling ahead of OSU, 10-8. Here Stanford pulled a little sleight of hand, moving their ranked 157# wrestler up to 165 where Aaron Olmos battled to a 1-1 Over Time match, only to get taken down in OT. Stanford was ahead by 13-8.

Beaver fans fully expected Colt Doyle, who has been on a hot streak at 174, to close that gap at least a little if not entirely. Colt lead the first two periods, only to lose in the final seconds 6-7. Gotta win those close matches!

At 184, Bob Coleman won by decision bring the Beavs back within striking distance, 11-16. Jamarcus Grant, up against Stanfords' best wrestler, ranked #9, kept it to a loss by decision, but the Beavers were in a hole too deep to dig out, 11-19.

Our other "bookend",  #3 senior Amar Dhesi, worked mightily on Trevor Rasmussen, but could not turn him over. Amar finally settled for a tech fall, getting his last required take down with about 25 seconds to spare! Final score 16-19 for Stanford.

Ronnie Bresser and Joe DeMatteo look on as Josh Reyes speaks

It was Senior Night and six seniors and their families were honored ot on the mat before the meet began. Ronnie Bresser Kegan Calkins, Amar Dhesi, Zach Evans, Joseph DeMatteo
Josh Reyes and Rodney Williams were honored in Gill and then afterward in Reser at the Social. At the Social, the seniors came up and shared some of their thoughts about their time at OSU, their plans for the future and words of encouragement for the younger wrestlers. Many thanks, seniors! When I post this email on the FALL's blog later, I will add a few snapshots from the Social.

Friday - Senior Night - Meet Starts at 6:00!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Oregon State Wrestling team takes to their home mat for the final time this season on Friday, Feb 15 with a start time of 6:00 pm, hosting the Stanford Cardinal.

Because it is the final home meet, it will also be Senior Night which traditionally sees the seniors being introduced out on center mat along with their families before the start of the meet. Be sure to be seated at least 10 minutes before 6:00 to be able to honor the seniors. The seniors will also be recognized at the Social following the meet. The seniors are: Ronnie Bresser, Kegan Calkins, Joe DeMatteo, Amar Dhesi (he's a grad student, but this is his final year of eligibility), Josh Reyes, Zach Evans, Christian Robertson and Rodney Williams. Thank you for your years of hard work, gentlemen!

Scouting out the wrestling for Friday:
Stanford's article - this one covers their last result

Following if you can't be at Gill:

Important Reminders:
Start time is 6:00, different than the usual 7:00
Plastic bag rule - security requires things brought in must be in a transparent plastic bag/purse. It must be smaller than about a foot square and tall, any other bags must be left at a bag-check station in the lobby

Lapel Pins for FALL Club members:
If you haven't already picked up your pin, please do so on Friday. FALL Board members will be in the lobby until about 5:45, then after the meet we will be in Reser at The Club - level 3 - for the Social. If you can't make it, perhaps someone else can pick it up for you? There will be one other opportunity at the Awards Banquet in April. Please help save me the time and effort required to mail any leftover pins.

Social after the Meet
The FALL will be hosting its final Social of the season in Reser Stadium's Club. The Social is free for all Club members. Come and join us for some snacks, a chance to pick up your lapel pin if you haven't done so, the opportunity to win some door prizes or Silent Auction items and a short program. Hopefully the program will include a few words from each of our senior wrestlers.

Larry Wright
For those of you who have been following Oregon State Wrestling for many years,  Len Kauffman shared this sad news with us this week: Larry Wright (OSU '60) died Monday, February 11, at age 82. Memorial Service information was not yet available. Our condolences to Larry's family.

Let's get a good crowd together to cheer on the seniors one more time and to help boost the Beavers over the Cardinal on Friday night! Chew down that tree! Hope to see you there!

Beavs Knock Off Two Ranked Guys - But Cyclones Win

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Beavers picked up four of the 10 matches, including two ranked opponents, but the Cyclones whirled away with all the rest, winning 23-14 on Monday night in Gill Coliseum.

#3 Ronnie Bresser just seems to get more solid as the season goes by. He started things off  at 125 with a never-in-doubt victory, 9-5, over his #16 opponent, Alex Mackall.

At 141 Grant Willits thrilled the crowd with his speed and ability to turn what looks like advantage to his opponent into his favor. In so doing, he came up with the first upset of the night, defeating # 11 Ian Parker 9-4, leading the entire time. Just goes to show you what a little positivity (and talent) can do!

The next victory for the Beavers came at 174 where Colt Doyle led another thriller over his ranked opponent, #20 Marcus Coleman. Colt was in charge throughout the match, finishing it 12-6. Colt seems to be improving in each new match. Keep it up, Colt!

Oregon State's other of the bookend #3's, Amar Dhesi - concluded the meet with his customary pounding of his opponent, Ethan Anderson, settling for a techfall, 23-8 when he ran out of time for the pin. Amar, we're going to miss watching you!

Congratulations to all the match winners - Ronnie Bresser, Grant Willits, Colt Doyle and Amar Dhesi!

Two other matches were very close - when is someone going to tell these guys you don't need to lose your match in the final seconds?! At 149 Josh Reyes was up against #14 Jarrett Degen. It was a mismatched pairing with a gangly Degen appearing to be at least a head taller than Josh. Behind after Round 1 with the score 2-3, Josh pulled it to a 6-6 tie by the end of the second. Unfortunately Josh couldn't get away before giving up a four point nearfall very near to the end of the match.

The other close match was at 165, where Aaron Olmos led Logan Schumacher throughout the match, only to give up a takedown to tie it and then lost in Sudden Victory Overtime. Those two matches could have made a huge difference in the meet score!

The line-up for Oregon State again had 157 covered by Zech Bresser. Hunter Willits has not wrestled since injury defaulting out of his match at Fresno.

Being a Monday evening of a terrible weather day - snow up north and pouring, cold rain in the valley, kept the crowd size a little smaller, but there was a fair-sized contingent of fans from Hermiston, OR, who came specifically to watch two of the wrestlers. What was unusual was that both wrestlers were in the same weight class, 184 - Bob Coleman and Sam Colbray. Apparently Bob & Sam were best friends in high school in Hermiston. They had not competed against each other back then because Bob was always smaller than Sam. Sam won this one, 13-4.

For more details:

Television:

The Beavers now will finish their home dual season with a 6:00 Friday night meet with a Pac-12 Stanford team. Seniors Ronnie Bresser, Kegan Calkins, Joe DeMatteo, Amar Dhesi, Zach Evans, Josh Reyes, Christian Robertson and Rodney Williams will be honored - both before the meet out on the floor and later at the Social in Reser hosted by "The FALL" Fan Club. That meet will be this coming Friday, Feb 15. Let's hope the weather improves by then. Hope to see you all there!

Reminder - Wrestling Monday Evening!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Just a friendly reminder - the Beavers have their second last home dual of the season on Monday, February 11 at 7 pm in Gill Coliseum. They will be hosting the Iowa State Cyclones.

Scout out the coming action with:

"The FALL" will have their table in the lobby until about 6:45. If you haven't already picked up your FALL Club lapel pin for 2018-19, stop by. Hats, t-shirts and pins from previous years will also be available. There will be no Social following the meet this time.

Monday evening is not great timing for making it to Gill, but there are only two more meets here at home before the end of the season. Please try to get here to help cheer the Beavers on. If you can't make it, it will be live on Pac-12 television.

One more item, Ronnie Bresser made the front page of the Corvallis Gazette Times' Sports section. Congratulations, Ronnie! The GT's article is definitely worth taking a look.

Last Two Home Meets Next Week - Monday and Friday!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Believe it or not, we are down to the last two home meets of the season. And - there is only one more dual for the Beavers after that. A road trip to Cal Baptist in California on Feb 22 finishes the dual meet season for the Oregon State Wrestling team. After that only the Championship tournaments remain - the Pac-12's and the NCAA's.

So mark you calendars! Next Monday, Feb 11, at 7:00 pm the Beavers host the Iowa State Cyclones. The Beavers final home stand for 2018-19 will be Friday, Feb 15 at 6 pm versus The Stanford Cardinal.

Monday night's dual will be a good challenge for the Beavers, as the Cyclones, ranked #14 according to their article, seem to be having a good season. Note for FALL Club members - since this is a Monday night, there will be no Social after the meet.

Then on Friday, Feb. 15, the Stanford Cardinal team is also having a good season and presents its own challenge to the Beavers. Note: start time for this meet is 6:00 pm, not the standard 7:00 pm.

After the dual with Stanford, The FALL will host its final Social of the season. This will be Senior night, so come on over and say thank you and good luck to the Seniors on the team: Ronnie Bresser, Kegan Calkins, Joe DeMatteo, Amar Dhesi ( a graduate student), Zach Evans, Josh Reyes, Christian Robertson and Rodney Williams. Perhaps we can persuade them each to say a few words to the crowd. Reminder, Seniors are announced along with their families to the crowd before the meet begins, so get to your seat a few minutes early to give then their recognition, don't forget, that start time is 6:00!

For more information:
OSU article: the Archives, you will find a link to their newest article once it gets posted.
ISU article:  you will find info on their recent victories.
Stanford article: a recap of their recent victory over ASU

Television - both of these meets will be televised live on Pac-12 television.

Looking ahead to next month and the Pac-12's in Tempe, we still have hotel rooms in the block available for Beaver fans. Remember, Tempe is going to be very busy, with most rooms taken up, so if you want to go, snag one of these. The rate of  2 queen beds for $119/night + 14.07% tax is a good rate for this area any time of the year. There are other room options available as well. If you 'd like one of these rooms, contact Jana Iwasaki ( jana.iwasaki@gmail.com) or myself for the details. Rooms must be reserved by the end of February. We turn the block back to the hotel on March 1. The Pac-12's take place at ASU in Tempe, on Saturday, March 9. Hope you can make it to cheer on the Beavs!

Finally, if you have not read the latest update from the Coaches Office, I have pasted it down below my signature for your convenience.

Hello Beaver Nation,

It has been a very busy few weeks and want to send out a quick update on how the team is doing. The team has been working hard and will be coming off a good training week heading into the Iowa State and Stanford duals. We can tell in the practice room that the team is very focused and excited with the postseason approaching. Our practices this time of year are shorter and more intense.

We are going into the home stretch of the season with our final two home dual meets coming up next week. We will be taking on the Iowa State Cyclones Monday night followed by Stanford Friday night, which will be senior night. Come out and make some noise for our final two home dual meets of the season!

We have a few guys that are really finding their groove and competing well towards the end of the season. Ronnie Bresser, currently ranked #3, continues to have a dominating season with his only loss coming to the #1 wrestler in the country in overtime! Amar Dhesi, currently ranked #4, has rattled off five straight wins with a dominate win over #20 AJ Nevills of Fresno State last week. Colt Doyle has won five of his last six and has scored bonus points in four of those wins.

The PAC12 Championships will be held at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona on March 9. If you are planning on making the trip down to catch some sunshine and good wrestling we want to thank you for your support!

Thanks, and GO Beavs!

Beavers Break Even For Road Trip

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Beavers did not have much trouble lassoing the Cal Poly Mustangs this afternoon in San Louis Obispo, winning the dual 37-10. In Fresno on Thursday, Oregon State only managed to pick off 3 matches. This afternoon, they won eight of the ten! Three of those wins were by first period fall! Way to go, guys!

Match winners were: - in the order of the meet - Bob Coleman (by major), Amar Dhesi (by fall!), Ronnie Bresser (by fall!), Devan Turner (by decision), Grant Willits (by major), Josh Reyes (by major), Aaron  Olmos (by major), and Colt Doyle (by fall!) Congratulations to all!

Note that the 157 pound match was a forfeit by Oregon State. Hunter Willits had to medically forfeit the match at Fresno. Hopefully his injury is not serious.

Cal Poly's best wrestler, Thomas Lane, ranked #17, defeated Jamarcus Grant at 197 by major.

Of local interest, two of Cal Poly's team members wrestled for high schools close by. At 149, Ty Schilling wrestled at Sweet Home High School and 157 Brawley Lamer wrestled for Corvallis' Crescent Valley High School.
