September Newsletter WELCOME BACK We
hope this email finds you all well! Life on campus has started to pick
up after a summer unlike any in recent memory. Our student-athletes have
been trickling back to town over the course of the previous two months
as they prepare for the first official day of classes at Oregon State
University on September 23. Since
their arrival to campus in late June, the team has been attending
voluntary workouts. Though not mandatory, there has been significant
enthusiasm from the student-athletes to get back to a somewhat normal
routine. The workouts usually consist of a conditioning segment followed
by a weight-lifting session that same day and is run four times a week. RECRUITING Currently, the NCAA DI Council has extended the temporary COVID-19 recruiting dead period through September 30th,
which prohibits all in-person recruiting activities. To help navigate
this difficult circumstance, the OSU wrestling staff has been hard at
work preparing a virtual tour which will debut in the coming weeks. The
360-degree picture tour helps prospective student-athletes get a taste
of what to expect when they step onto campus at Oregon State University.
Coupled with pictures from all of the beautiful places the region has
to offer, it is our hope this will help us mitigate the lost impact of
in-person recruiting. BEAVER DAM WRESTLING RTC
Regional
Training Centers have quickly become one of the most important aspects
of the collegiate and international wrestling landscape. In addition to
providing opportunities for elite athletes to train and compete, they
provide the highest caliber of training partners for student-athletes. The
Beaver Dam Wrestling Regional Training Center aims to do just that. The
Beaver Dam Wrestling Regional Training Center is a nonprofit
sports organization committed to the development of athletics and
personal growth through the sport of wrestling. By fostering a
competitive environment, providing mentorship, opportunity, and
resources our organization is able to reach the youth, collegiate, and
senior-level athletes aspiring to become NCAA, World, and Olympic
Champions as well as leaders of the community. The Beaver Dam Wrestling
RTC operates as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization powered by
charitable donors, sponsors, and supporters both locally and nationally
who share a common interest in the growth and preservation of the sport
of wrestling. The
Beaver Dam RTC's goal is to support multiple senior level athletes as
they compete on the international wrestling circuit during the current
Olympic cycle. Additionally, our organization provides world class
training opportunities for elite developmental athletes from the Pacific
Northwest while also playing an active role in both our local
communities and the greater Pacific Northwest wrestling community. The
Beaver Dam Regional Training Center practices take place at the Dale
Thomas Wrestling Facility on the campus of Oregon State University. This
facility houses the wrestling training facility, newly renovated weight
training and cardiovascular facilities directly beneath it, as well as a
sports medicine and therapy room. The
OSU wrestling staff has been hard at work preparing the framework for a
successful RTC. Among the most important aspects of this is the Beaver
Dam Wrestling RTC Board of Directors. All of the members of the board
were chosen for their dedication to the sport of wrestling and desire to
see its continued success in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Board Members: - James R. Baumgardner
- Christopher Pendleton
- Bryce Saddoris
- Clayton Jack
- Gregory Strobel
In
the coming weeks the RTC website will be live with all information
regarding Beaver Dam wrestling. You will be able to find out about
coaches, athletes, upcoming events, fundraiser initiatives, gear and
merchandise, etc. If
you or any business you know would like to make a charitable donation
to the Beaver Dam Wrestling Regional Training Center please contact
Wrestling Assistant Coach Mike Kosoy at mike.kosoy@oregonstate.edu. GET TO KNOW
This
portion of the newsletter is aimed towards getting to know a new member
of the OSU wrestling staff. In this months edition we get to know
Assistant Coach Mike Kosoy. v Introduce us to your background and family growing up - Well,
I grew up in South Florida where I was born first-generation American
to loving Ukrainian parents (Roman & Natasha). I also have a brother
(Laurence Kosoy), who currently wrestles at Columbia University in New
York and two sisters (Inna & Kathy) that live in Los Angeles, CA.
- I
started wrestling my freshman year of high school after one of my
football coaches told me that it would be great cross training for
football during my off-season. Little did he know, I would fall in love
with wrestling and it would become more important to me than football
ever was.
v What are your interests outside of wrestling? - My
interests outside of wrestling include anything thats outdoors. I enjoy
hiking, camping, and fishing. I also like to travel and have new
experiences. In addition to the outdoor activities I already do, Im
currently trying to learn how to hunt.
v Who is your role model and why? - My
role models would have to be my parents. They left the former USSR for a
better life here in the United States and through hard work and
perseverance have provided me and my siblings with great lives. They
instilled in us the belief that we can do anything we want in this life
if we work hard.
v Tell us about a secret skill (ie music, language, cooking, etc) that you possess? - Im
not quite sure its a secret considering I post about it on my social
media all the time, but I really enjoy smoking meat for myself and my
friends. I like to smoke steaks, ribs, brisket, fish, chicken, elk, YOU
NAME IT!
- I also speak fluent Russian.
v What is your favorite food? - Oh
man! I go through phases, but currently pizza has been my cheat meal of
choice. Nothing too crazy, just with some meats (sausage, pepperoni) on
it, peppers, and fresh mozzarella cheese.
v What inspires you? - There
isnt a singular place I get inspiration. Im inspired by the people
around me daily because I want to be the hardest worker in the room. Im
inspired by other individuals drive and ability to work through
adversity. If they can do it, why not me?
v What's the best advice anyone has given you? - The
best advice I ever got was from my high school coach: You can only
control whats in between your ears. There is no point in wasting
time/energy worrying about circumstances outside of your control. If you
can control what you can control then youre already on track to
achieving your goals.
v Anything else you want to share?
- Im
just super thankful and blessed to have been given this opportunity to
be surrounded by such outstanding like-minded individuals on this staff.
Im also thankful for the alumni and fans of the Oregon State Wrestling
program who have been so welcoming with our arrival to the Pacific
Northwest. I look forward to making them proud and seeing them pack Gill
Coliseum this season!
