October Newsletter - From the Coaches's Office

October Newsletter

BACK IN ACTION!

We hope this email finds you all well! We have been chipping away during these uncertain times alongside the rest of the country. Finally on October 12th we began our full contact training in the Dale Thomas Wresting Facility. With the new testing protocols our team is tested each day we have live contact (4x a week) to ensure our athletes health and safety. We have since been weight training four times a week at 6:30am and wrestling four times a week at 3:30pm. The guys have a fire in them from this long layoff and have NEVER been this excited to get back to work. We are excited for the future!

RECRUITING

Currently, the NCAA DI Council has yet again extended the temporary COVID-19 recruiting dead period through January 1st, which prohibits all in-person recruiting activities. Our staff has continued to persevere through adversity and continue on our recruiting trail virtually. We continue to get high ranking commitments from great young men around the country that want to part of something special here in Corvallis.

GREG STROBEL:  (August 17, 1952 October 8, 2020)

It is with a heavy heart we inform our Beaver Family of the passing of one of our own, Greg Strobel. Our condolences to the Strobel family, especially his daughters, Jennifer and Christine, who also lost their mom in January.

"The passing of Coach Strobel has given us all heavy hearts the past week, he touched everyone he interacted with in such a positive way. I read a great quote the other day that made me smile. Tears will heal, memories will comfort, and legacies will live on forever Coach Strobel has left a lasting legacy in the world that will inspire for generations."  Oregon State Wrestling Head Coach Chris Pendleton.

We continue to digest the news about Greg Strobel's sudden passing.

Thanks to John Kowalewski for the tip that tomorrow, teammates, roommates and BFFs, Ron Sather, Tommy Phillips and Larry Bielenberg are scheduled to be on The Joe Beaver radio show at 12:20pm reflecting on their memories with Greg.  I hope Larry tells the story about his first time playing ping pong (ever) vs Strobe.

Kerry posted an update to Michael Denison (Lucky Bucky)

See below update from Mike's wife Kerry indicating she'd like to move forward with the oasis garden project in November.

Scott, are you still able to donate hardware for this project?

Let's rally the alumni to help out.

August 2020 picture on our 12th anniversary in Yachats. Beautiful day!

Michael is still working hard, walking multiple times a day. Working out his arm & hand. Still in speech therapy once a week. Speaking slightly more, but still very hard to get the word out he’s trying to say. Spirits are still up & still has sense of humor. I’m getting him out with friends/family once an while. Have been camping a few times. Did have a scare when he had a Tonic Seizure while camping early one morning. Paramedics came but after episode ended, he said he did not need to go to hospital. Hasn’t had one since & I hope he never does. We saw doctor & have appointment with neurologist tomorrow.

He’s been mowing & on his tractor a lot, preparing for winter to hit.

We need to get pavers & fountain in place for Mikey’s oasis soon, as weather will stop us from getting the work done.

I didn’t write down a list of people who volunteered to help. That was also before virus hit. Looking at sometime between November 6th-24th. If you are comfortable and still willing to help, please send a message through this website.

Again, thank you for all your support & prayers. This has helped & will help us tremendously.

Love & peace to all.
Michael & Kerry
