Beavers 12th

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

The Beavs finished the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships in 12th place. Let me introduce Beaver Nation’s newest All-Americans:

Brandon Kaylor, 8th place All-American

Devan Turner, 8th place All-American

Grant Willits, 4th place All-American

Hunter Willits, 7th place All-American

Congrats!!

To put it in perspective, the last time we had 4 All-Americans, the internet was relatively new to most households and I was getting my NCAA updates by running to the mailbox to check the Oregonian’s box scores. Continuing my trip down memory lane, the '94-95 schedule had 7 home meets, the Oregon Classic in Gill, an away dual at University of Oregon and the Pac-10s in Corvallis.

4 All-Americans, tied for 14th place

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Wow, what a day! The second day is my favorite and this year did not disappoint. We have FOUR ALL-AMERICANS!! BK, Devan and Hunter are all going for 7th tomorrow and Grant could finish as high as 3rd. The last time the Beavs had this many place winners was in 1995 when Les Gutches won a title and the team finished 2nd.

Everyone but Munoz has finished higher than their seed. It’s not over but we have lots to celebrate. I’m proud of this team and so happy for them.

In Pac-12 news, ASU is making a splash in 3rd among the otherwise Big-Ten leaders and also Stanford’s returning champion Shane Griffiths beat #1 seed Evan Wick of Cal Poly in the final second to advance to the finals.

Hunter knocks off #1 seed, all 8 alive and 4 in quarterfinals

Beaver Wrestling Supporters!!

The Beavs finished day one of the NCAAs with all 8 alive: 4 in the consolations (Devan Turner, Cory Crooks, Matthew Olguin, Gas Tank Gary) and 4 into the quarterfinals (Brandon Kaylor, Willits x2, Trey Munoz).

I’ve attended 16 NCAA tourneys with my dad but unfortunately am not in Detroit this year. Thanks to John Kowalewski, Larry Bielenberg and Tommy Phillips for calling me during the most exciting matches of today and letting me hear them coaching into the TV. The Beavers’ first upset was in the second round when BK beat the #6 seed, Wisconsin’s Eric Barnett. But the real news came when Hunter Willits knocked off the #1 seed, David Carr of Iowa State in double overtime. The whole country is talking about this…and the Beavers’ overall performance.

See Hunter’s interview on ESPN:
