Nov 6, 2014 - the Intra-Squad

"Round One" of the Oregon State Wrestling Season took place on center mat at Gill Coliseum tonight with the Intra-Squad meet.

Fans filling the lower stands were entertained with some very tight matches and some surprising results.
Matches began with the 125 lb. weight class.

125 - Ronnie Bresser III won the battle of the Ronnie's, defeating Ronnie Stevens 16-5

133 - Joey Palmer pulled out a hard fought battle with Jack Hathaway 3-1

141 - A very entertaining match with lots of scrambles between Devin Reynolds and Jared Reis with Devin taking the match by a score of 11-7

149 - Another close match, Abraham Rodriguez beat Jay Tovey 8-5

157 - The first two periods were close, but Alex Elder, down a weight from last year, put it away in the third period, taking out Joey Delgado, who moved up 2 weights from last season, 10-5

165 - Seth Thomas was ahead 7-0 after the first period, but finished it in the second period with a fall over freshman Rodney Williams

174 - In a battle of 2 seniors, Joe Latham defeated Kurtis Ramsay 9-6

184 - Taylor Meeks, at a lower weight than last year, prevailed over freshman Corey Griego in a close match, 5-2, with the last 2 points being awarded on the buzzer

197 - Cody Crawford won the Cascade vs Scio match (local schools) by major 10-2 over teammate Josh Parazoo.

285 (Hwt) - Nathaniel Keeve, who is listed as a 197, downed Mick Dougharity 7-3

Next up, the team travels up to Forest Grove for the Mike Clock Open Tournament. Since it is an open many of the Beavers will be competing. Wrestling begins at 9:00 am on Sunday, Nov. 9.

Open Practice & Parent/Fan Tailgater

Barbecue firing up before Practice!
For Homecoming, Oregon State's wrestling fans had the opportunity to take in the final Open Practice before the upcoming Intrasquad. Practice took place Saturday, Nov. 1, from 3:30-5:00 pm, followed by the annual Parent/Fan tailgater outside the Wrestling entrance to the practice facility.

The bleachers in the corner and some cushy chairs that were moved in for the event were filled with eager fans. It was apparent from the activity in the room that the intensity level has been dialed up. There are some good battles brewing for positions that will come to the fore at the Intrasquad on the 6th! You won't want to miss them!

After the finish of practice, it was good to see
Lining up for laps
some wrestlers continuing to put in a little more time, asking the coaches for advice, etc. Then everyone headed downstairs for some barbecue and tailgating fun before heading for the game or home.

The food was great, some barbecued steaks, french fries that were totally addictive - yum! -
Barbecuing steaks
and tables of salads and desserts.

One last treat for those who hung around long enough, the Oregon State Marching Band was  marching around

campus, entertaining people along the way. The band made a stop right alongside the wrestling tailgater and serenaded the fans with several songs before moving on. They were great! Let's hope we get to hear more from them at some of our home meets again this year!!

Next up is the Intrasquad meet which will be held in Gill Coliseum on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 pm.

If you haven't read all the previews for the weight classes, be sure to check out the articles at the osubeavers.com website. They are the five articles dated 10-27-14 through 10-31-14.

Parking for the Intrasquad will be easier than on football game days. You should be able to park for free in most of the lots around Gill. Be there to cheer on all the guys! Then come back a week later for the first home dual with Southern Oregon on November 13!

Open Practice - October 16, 2014

Sports Performance Center - north of Reser
The Beavers held their second Open Practice of the season on Thursday, Oct 16, at 4:00. This is the first Open Practice on a Thursday that I can remember, but television now dictates when things happen, and Oregon State was playing football that evening.

This was actually the first official Open Practice for this year, as the first Open Practice was an unofficial event before school actually started.
Entrance to practice facility
If I remember correctly it is a fairly recent NCAA ruling that wrestling cannot officially start practice until October 10.

Considering that it was a Thursday, quite a few fans were in attendance. They filled up the bleachers
Fans waiting for practice
in the room and more people were standing on the sides. Seems that the fans are anxious for competition to begin!

Since this was still the first week of official practice, the coaches weren't pushing as hard as they could, but the guys seemed to have taken things up a notch since the first Open Practice!
Assembling for practice
I was watching the scrambles between Joey Palmer and Devin Reynolds, Jack Hathaway and Ronnie Rios-Bresser, Joey Delgado and Seth Thomas, and volunteer Assistant Coach Chad Hanke and Amar Dhesi. I wanted to watch more of the pairings, but

these were the closest and they were so much fun to watch, I kept forgetting the others much of the time. In fact, the battles of Palmer/Reynolds and Hathaway/Rios-Bresser were so engrossing that only the occasional THUMP! of Hanke/Dhesi hitting the mats would draw my attention away!

And it's not just the lower weights that are in contention. I'm really looking forward to the Intrasquad, Nov. 6, (another Thursday!) at 7:00 pm! Usually you
Head Coach Zalesky warming up the team
have a pretty good idea of who will fill each spot in the line-up, but I have no idea who will take many of the weights. It will be very interesting!!

If you haven't already filled out your application form to join "The FALL" Fan Club, just look to the right side of this page under "Links". The fifth one down is the application form. You can download it, fill it out and send it in. In fact, it is a "fillable" form. Download it to your computer, and open it from there. Then you should be able to type in your information and print out the finished form. Information on where to mail it is included on the form.

Deadline for sending in your application is Oct 31. That gives enough time for members of the Board to process everything and get member packets ready on time for the first dual meet of the year, (coming up soon!) - Nov. 13, at 7 pm.

Open Practice - September 20 - Part 1

Every September a new crop of faces appear in the Oregon State Wrestling Room, eager for the upcoming season of wrestling. Along with them, the fans
A. Keeve, Parazoo, Delgado
are looking forward to the start of the season.

For those who can't wait any longer, the Open Practices are a great way to start learning the new names and faces on the team.

The first of those practices for this year took place on Saturday, Sept 20. With the temperature in the 90's outside, it was
B. Tobin, Mangrum, Reis, Rodriguez
pretty warm in the room before the practice even began. A comment from one of the fans present implied that we may have lost of few pounds just sitting and watching!

Michael Denison wasn't there  with his great camera, but Jack and I brought our little camera along and Jack snapped some photos.

I have tried to identify who I can, but I haven't learned all the new
C. ?, Griego, Bresser
guys yet. If anyone can identify any of the "?" here in the captions, please let me know and I'll get their names up where they belong!
D. Latham, Delgado, Tyler Chay, ?, Rollins, Henrickson

Schedule From 1964-65

This is just for fun, you never know what will turn up on the internet. This was an ebay find by "The FALL"  Fan Club President, Craig Scharer. It was one of the little "pocket schedules" that Oregon State printed for the 1964-65 season. Thanks for sharing, Craig!
