Results for Duke Dual

The Beavers' first dual of the season on Saturday was with Duke. While we knew the Beavers' won 22-20, we did not have any details. Finally found some here in the article on Duke's Wrestling News page. 

To save you the trouble of looking for it, I have the main body copied here below. One comment - it appears that both teams had a forfeit, so there were only 8 matches. Duke forfeited 125 and OSU forfeited 197.

Winners for the Beavers were: 125 Kegan Calkins - by forfeit, 141 - Joey Palmer by decision, 149 and 157 Joey Delgado and Abe Rodriguez - by decision, 165 Rodney Williams by major decision and 184 Corey Griego by decison. Congratulations to all the match winners!

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke wrestling team mounted a furious comeback, but couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 22-20 loss to 15th-ranked Oregon State to start the Blue Devils’ dual schedule. The Blue Devils won three of the final four bouts with bonus points in the comeback effort.  

Senior Jacob Kasper continued his perfect start to the year at heavyweight with a third-period pin over David Henry. Kasper has picked up bonus points in three of his six victories and with two of those wins coming by fall.

The Blue Devils trailed 19-3 after six bouts and then picked up five points on a commanding 15-0 technical fall by Connor Bass at 174 pounds. He joins Kasper on the undefeated list with a 6-0 mark with four of those wins earning him bonus points.

After a decision at 184 by Oregon State’s Corey Griego upped the Beavers’ lead to 22-8 and put the match out of reach for the Blue Devils despite getting a forfeit and a fall in the final two bouts.

Also earning his first dual win as a Blue Devil was senior Cole Baumgartner at 133. He edged Devan Turner by a 10-8 decision to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Both Zach Finesilver and Alec Schenk put forth strong showings in their losses to top-20 foes from Oregon State. Schenk fell 7-3 to 14th-ranked Griego, while Finesilver suffered an 11-5 setback to No. 12 Joey Palmer.

Beavers Split Weekend Duals

We don't have all the details, but we do have the results of the Beavers' opening action of the 2016-17 season at the Mountaineer Duals in Boone, NC. Won the first, dropped the second.

According to the article at osubeavers.com, the Beavers defeated the Duke Blue Devils 22-18, but then lost to Appalachian State, 25-15.

The link to TrackWrestling never worked for the first dual with Duke, so we have no details other than the score.

The results from TrackWrestling show wins from true freshman Devan Turner at 133, senior Joey Palmer at 141, a fall by senior Joey Delgado at 149 and another win by junior Abraham Rodriguez at 157. Congratulations to the winners!

The action seems to have been much closer than the score appears when you read the details from the Appalachian State Wrestling News page:

The marquee matchup of the day came as Appalachian State University wrestling played host to Oregon State, who were ranked No. 15 in the country in this week’s USA Today/NWCA poll.

The Mountaineers won the final five matches to get the win, getting one pin on the day and one major decision.

The neck-and-neck battle began in the very first weight class as senior Vito Pasone (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./E.L. Meyers) took Kegan Calkins in the 125-pound match. Calkins worked his way to a slight advantage in the match and held it for two and a half periods, but Pasone continued to fight, pulling back within striking distance before getting a last second takedown to give him the 13-9 decision. 

The Mountaineers were then unable to take the next four weight classes, as No. 8 Joey Palmer defeated Irvin Enriquez in the 141 match 13-8, No. 18 Joey Dalgado downed Matt Zovistoski by a pin in 3:24, and Abraham Rodriguez defeated Gavin Londoff in the 157 match by 4-2 decision.

Appalachian refused to go away quietly, however, as No. 16 Forrest Przybysz fought another tough 165-match, once again getting a victory in a 4-1 decision. Marcus Johnson carried the momentum forward, getting the super close 3-2 decision victory over Weston Dobler. 

With the team score close, David Peters-Logue battled in a ferocious back-and-forth against No. 14 Corey Grego, but found an opportunity late and took it pulling Griego down and locking him into a pin (3:32).

Randall Diabe got the win by forfeit at the 197 weight class to give the Mountaineers the lead, putting the onus on the heavyweight matchup to secure the victory.

No. 9 Denzel Dejournette worked the legs of David Henry well from the start, keeping the heavyweight out of attacking position. Dejournette would take the final match of the day and secure the upset for Appalachian State by getting a 12-4 major decision. 

If I can find any other information on the dual with Duke I will send it out.

The Beavers will have to regroup and come home for the Joe Wells Classic next Sunday, facing off with #11 Michigan at high noon in Gill Coliseum. We will need a large, supportive crowd to cheer the Beavers on for that contest!

Beaver Wrestlers Start Season on East Coast

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

This Saturday, Nov 12, brings the beginning of the wrestling dual meet season for the Beavers. They travel to Boone, NC, for the Mountaineer Duals. The event will be held in the Appalachian State varsity gym.

Oregon State faces Duke at noon EST (9:00 am PST) and Appalachian State at 2:00 EST (11:00 am PST). Times are from TrackWrestling.

If you want to watch live video, Craig Scharer found this link to sign up for video at Appalachian State. The least expensive option is $11.95 for a month. Not sure if the video would cover all the duals. They may only cover the ones with App State. The dual between OSU and Duke might not be covered.

The Beavers Home opener will be the next weekend. Sunday Nov 20 is the date for the second Annual Joe Wells Classic. #15 Oregon State takes on #11 Michigan.

Neither team will field their regular heavyweight as both OSU's Amar Dhesi and Michigan's Adam Coon are out with injuries. Coon is out for the season, hopefully Dhesi will be returning soon.

If you are still wondering about the forfeits at the Mike Clock, Ron Iwasaki attended. Ron relayed that there were more teams, both women and men. That all added up to a long event even with an extra mat. Students first, athletes second, some guys had to get back and couldn't stay that late. Can't blame them!

Mike Clock Results & Open Tournament Schedule

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

A group of Beaver wrestlers dove into competition today in Forest Grove at Pacific University's Mike Clock Open.

At 141 - Zach Wigzell took 2nd and Hans Rockwell took 4th. Bryce Parson was 2nd at 149. Three other Beavers placed 4th: Collbran Meeker - 165, Weston Dobler - 174 and Jimmy Millea - Hwt. Congratulations to all the placers!

There were a number of forfeits listed. This is just a guess, but it is possible that some left because they could not stay long enough. I wasn't there, so I am not sure about that.

One new face, Wyatt Patten - 157, showed up as a member of the Oregon State team by TrackWrestling. He  must be new, as his name had not been on the roster until now.

This coming Saturday, Nov 12, the first string will begin the dual meet season back in North Carolina, facing Applachian State and Duke.

Intrasquad Results

Black team

 Fans and wrestlers alike got their first taste of real matches for the 2016-17 season tonight in Gill Coliseum.

Before the 7:00 hour rolled around, Ronnie Bresser and Kegan Calkins did a demonstration drill match, exchanging takedowns. Ronnie may take his redshirt year this season, but that has not yet been determined.

Orange Team

The regular matches began with a couple of exhibitions. The first was a match at 141 between Conner Noonan and Michael Carr, two freshmen. Noonan prevailed, 4-2. The second exhibition was two more freshman, at 165. Riley Jaramillo took on Drake McKee. Jaramillo took the match 12-5 after two close periods.

The scoring matches began at 133 with redshirt freshman Hans Rockwell and freshman Devan Turner. Turner was the victor, 8-4.

141 was between two former starters, Joey Palmer - last year's 133 - and Jack Hathaway who was the starter at 141 last year. It was very close but Palmer won 5-3.

149 - Joey Delgado won a major 13-3 over Bryce Parson.

157 - Abraham Rodriguez picked up a first period tech fall 18-1 over Joseph DeMatteo.

165 - Rodney Williams won by 7-2 over Collbran Meeker.

174 - Was definitely the closest match of the night. Redshirt freshman Weston Dobler and freshman Bobby Coleman battled back and forth through Sudden Victory, Double tiebreakers and a second Sudden Victory before Dobler got a last second takedown to win 4-2. Coleman definitely had the biggest fan base, as his fraternity brothers came to show their support.

184 - Corey Griego won by fall in the first period over freshman Adam Rateb.

197 - Cody Crawford won by injury default in the first period over freshman Kuloly Tudela.

Hwt - David Henry, former OSU football player, won 6-0 over teammate Josh Parazoo.

Some, but probably not all, Beavers will participate in the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University on Sunday, Nov. 6, in Forest Grove. So far they have no article about the tournament, but if they do, you should be able to find a link to it here:

As a fan, it was good to be back in Gill! Attendance was good and many fans used the opportunity to check out the new seats on the lower south side of the arena. Pretty cushy!!

Who Will Be On the Starting Line-Up? Intrasquad - Thursday Nov. 3!

Open Practice

 Who will be the starters for the Beavers for this season? The answers to that question should come this Thursday evening in Gill Coliseum. starting at 7:00.

Depth at some of the weights is deep, so there will probably be some wrestle-offs at Practice on Wednesday. The result is that there will be around 10 matches, maybe a few more, on Thursday evening.

Admission is free and parking in lots around Gill will also be free (no football game.)

More wrestling will be coming up this weekend at the Mike Clock Open Tournament all day Sunday at Pacific University's Stoller Center, in Forest Grove. Wrestling begins at 9:00 am and usually lasts into  the evening.

OSU will not be sending the whole team this year, only about 20 guys. The starters will stay home and get ready for their first duals of the season the next weekend back in North Carolina.

Parents - if you are wanting to see your son wrestle, make sure you ask him if he will be there! Circumstances sometimes interfere with participation in the open tournaments.

If you are in the Forest Grove area, attendance is a great way to show your support for wrestling. The Stoller Center has limited seating, so you may have to be willing to move around, but there is usually a spot to sit in the bleachers.

If you want to refresh your memory on who all the team members are and learn the new faces, the roster has been updated. Most of the bio's of the new members have been added.

While we have passed the deadline given for joining "The FALL" Fan Club, there's still time to join! The deadline helps us get a good chunk of the work done ahead of time. That gives the FALL Board more time to focus on the fans at the Meets and the Socials. Our wonderful Membership Coordinators - Reynold & Jennifer Gardner - will be happy to accept your application and get your ID badges in the mail. One note on the ID badges. To be efficient, we mailed only the badges in their plastic holders. Lanyards will be available at the Socials, just ask for them at the door. Pins, as mentioned before, will be available in January.

Note From the Coaches' Corner - October 27

Wrestling fans-

We hope everyone is having a great fall and getting ready for another wrestling season. We have completed our pre-season training phase and are now prepping for the 2016-2017 season that is just around the corner. Here are some upcoming dates and events to be aware of:

This Saturday, October 29th- open practice for the fans, supporters and families. Practice starts at 4:30 in The Dale Thomas Wrestling Room in The SPC.

We are just one week from The Black and Orange Intrasquad at Gill Coliseum. You can see many of the Beavs in action, next Thursday- November 3^rd at 7 PM.

On Sunday, November 6^th- Oregon State will have a contingent  of athletes compete at The Mike Clock Open at Pacific University. We should have at least 20 or so wrestlers competing.

The Beavers kick off the dual season on November 12^th in Boone, North Carolina as we take on Appalachian State and Duke University.

We host our annual Making a Difference Tournament for youth wrestlers through High School on November 13^th. Registration is now available at www.trackwrestling.com. This has been a great event for kids from all over the Northwest and we appreciate the support. We are excited once again to be hosting at OSU!

Our home opener will be November 20^th against The University of Michigan. Michigan enters the season with a pre-season ranking of #8, while the Beavers are #16.  It should be a great way to kick off the home schedule.

Season Tickets are now on sale at the OSU Ticket Office. Call 541-737-2050 to make your order. The home schedule this year includes Michigan, Stanford, ASU, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield. The Pac 12 Championships this year will be February 26^th at Stanford. Make plans to be a part of the always great Oregon State contingent of fans. OSU will once again have our clock of tickets at the NCAA Championships as well. They will be available at a later date through the ticket office, please let me know if you are interested in being a part of the OSU block.

Oregon State returns seven wrestlers with previous NCAA experience. The team starts the season with six wrestlers in the national rankings and plenty to prove. We are looking to do some great things this year and have a good mix of veterans and youngsters that are eager to step up to the challenges ahead. We have two new staff members in former OSU All-American Taylor Meeks, as well as 3x NCAA All-American Ian Miller, formerly of Kent State University.
