Cowboy Wrestling Opens 2021 Season with Doubleheader - Oklahoma State University Athletics (okstate.com)

This past Tuesday, Coach P reassured fans that he sees improvement in the team and the athletes are excited to compete.  He advised that he is building a process-driven program, not a results-driven program and is undaunted being held to a higher standard.  During the Zoom call, Colton Beisley at 174 lbs was surprised with a scholarship.  Beisley, a redshirt junior from St. Helens, OR is pursuing his degree in Fish & Wildlife.  Hwt Brian Barnes reported working hard in all areas of his life including earning a 3.3 GPA last term, which he attributed to being motivated and supported by the coaching staff.  Freshman Mason Reiniche from Tennessee shared about never seeing the Pacific Ocean before coming to Oregon and mastering 100 pull ups in 7 min before receiving his team gear.

Isaiah Martinez is getting ready for Team USA Training Camp and since he needs to be coaching the Beavers, they'll be flying in elite training partners.  Coach P also said they're about to make a big announcement...

Next week’s Zoom call is planned for Tues evening at 6pm.  The invite will be sent at a later date.

Reminder that we are not taking membership for The Fall this season.  Thank you very much to those who have reached out to me; however, you can continue to support the program with donations to the Oregon State University Wrestling Endowment Fund, Give to Wrestling

New wrestling mats to honor Greg Strobel

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

I wanted to give more information on the fundraising of the new mats for the practice room which will honor Greg Strobel.  This is a $100,000 initiative and thanks to the generosity of 3 families, we’re already up to $35K.  Donations are being collected by The OSU Foundation and are tax deductible.  Please check out the link below which has a rendering of the mats featuring Strobel holding his 1973 Outstanding Wrestler trophy.  This reminder of Strobel will continue to inspire greatness in the wrestling room and in life.

www.ourbeavernation.com/strobel

Greg Strobel is one of the reasons that I grew up to be a college wrestling fan.  My earliest memory of him was when he was a brand new coach at Lehigh (a place I'd never heard of) and brought his team to Corvallis for the Oregon Classic and a dual meet, in which the Beavs blanked the Mountain Hawks, 44-0.  Afterwards, Dale Thomas told him, “Strobes, you need a new team.”  Fast forward a few years and I never would have guessed that I’d end up in Bethlehem, PA attending Lehigh, where the only person I knew was Strobel.  I think the two of us were the only Beaver-Mountain Hawk wrestling hybrids.  He left this world way too early, but I’m grateful for the fun times shared and memories I'll smile about til I'm old and gray.

Earlier we heard teammates Larry Bielenberg, Tommy Phillips and Ron Sather share about Strobel on the Joe Beaver Radio Show.  Below is a link to a podcast by Lehigh with an interview by Chris Ayers and Pat Santoro.  They do mention the 1996 Oregon State trip a couple of times and the razzing on Strobel had me laughing.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Wishing all a safe and joyous New Year!

Pat Santoro & Chris Ayres '99 remember Greg Strobel

Lehigh wrestling head coach Pat Santoro and current Princeton wrestling head coach Chris Ayres '99 joined the show to tell incredible stories of the late, great former Lehigh wrestling coach and administrator Greg Strobel, who passed away on Oct. 8 at the age of 68. The two go in depth on the life and coaching career of Strobel, who had such a large impact on many people.

Updates from The Fall - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Beaver Wrestling Supporters!  Hope you all are enjoying the holidays, no matter how different they are in 2020.  I realized this is turning into a long email, so I will give the highlights first!

·         Coach P’s wife Selanèe is expecting their first baby around Jan 21.  The coaching staff is building their own family wrestling team, as this little guy or girl will join twins Breck and Brody Engel born on Sept 13.  We can’t wait for when we can meet in person!

·         The competition season is finally here!  First up, the Beavs will be away this weekend in Fargo for a quadrangular on Jan 3 with ND State, SD State and Missouri.  The action starts at 8am, Pacific.  Evan, will you stream on Facebook?

·         There will be Zoom calls a few days after the meets this season, where several of the wrestlers will give updates and answer questions from the chat.  I was told that the first one is slotted for Tuesday, Jan 5 to recap the team’s travels to chilly Fargo.  Stay tuned for the invite.

·         With no home meets and no post-meet socials this season, we will not be registering membership for The Fall.  For those of you who have already sent money, I’ll be reaching out to you individually regarding refunds.  Instead, we encourage consideration of donations toward The Wrestling Endowment Fund and buying new wrestling mats for the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room.  Please follow up with me if you have questions!

***********

Thanks to longtime Fall board member, Craig Scharer for help with the following updates.

The season schedule is posted:

https://osubeavers.com/sports/wrestling/schedule

There are 2 home meets in Gill Coliseum, on Jan 30 and Feb 7, but due to COVID-19, sadly no fans will be in the stands.  Oregon State will also host the Pac-12 championships (date has not been finalized, but it will likely be one week earlier than typical to allow for quarantining).  The good news is it will be televised on the Pac-12 network. Coach P confirmed that the NCAA tournament will be a full 32-participant bracket.

The NDSU schedule says some of their matches will be on BEK TV, and we’re not sure if there’s a livestream and if there’s a cost.  https://www.bek.tv/schedule#/
