On Tues, 3/1 we enjoyed a Zoom update from the coaching staff and some of the wrestlers, hosted by announcer Andrew Stanfield. Nate Engel said his twins are training to be future Willits. Gary Traub shared that when he arrived in Corvallis he lived next door to Grant and Hunter who helped him bond with the team. Highlight of his season was the Vegas tournament when he made a statement for the rest of the year. He likes fishing and may stay to wrestle at the Dam RTC. He misses Skyline chili.

Mateo Olmos spoke about the feature that Pac 12 Networks did. It shares his wrestling story and his personal story. He was presented the Francis and Nancy Hooks award for his involvement in the community and bridging cultures through advocacy. He works at a black culture center and is involved in a black fraternity, black student union, NAACP. He plans to return to San Diego and work in community programming with the focus on academics, athletics and arts.

 

Surprise guests BK and Ryan Reyes said hello. Reyes shared that he made a rap for IMAR. Maybe he can perform this at the banquet.

 

Coach P reiterated that the team has been working hard, the journey of the team has been fun. He reminded that the university fundraiser event, Dam Proud Day is coming up in April. Last year Wrestling came in behind Men’s Rowing, and we can't let that happen again. As a result of last year’s donations, the lounge in the wrestling room was improved and the student-athletes are utilizing it. This year, fundraising will support adding treadmills and heart rate monitors. As incentive, a 10’x10’ replica of the new competition mat will be given to the highest donor.

The team awards banquet will be on Sat 4/23 at the Corvallis Country Club. Details are being finalized but it will likely be at 4pm. Coach said he's excited to get together with everyone.

 

Coach reminded that a year ago we weren’t sure if we would have a Pac-12 wrestling conference when Stanford Wrestling was dropped (then reinstated). Now the conference has 3 top 25 teams and 2 top 10 teams.  Allocations for Pac-12 are trending up. He expressed gratitude for everyone’s support. The Beavers lead the nation in upsets and the team has a swagger.

Kerry Eggers wrote an article on Gas Tank Gary:

Traub began the season 1-4, falling to three returning All-Americans — Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet (currently ranked No. 5 nationally), Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel (No. 8) and twice to Lehigh’s Jordan Wood (No. 7).

“That was pretty tough,” Traub said. “But going into the season, I knew that would get me to where I need to be (at the end of the season). I’ve tried to take lessons from losing those four matches. I know I’m going to see them down the line in the nationals.”

The greatest heavyweight in Oregon State history — Jess Lewis — watched from the stands Friday night. A former two-time NCAA champion who went 76-1 through his college career, Lewis won 50 of his matches via the pin. Traub has only one fall all season, but it’s not his style.

“Ideally, you pin (the opponent) and get off the mat,” Traub said. “I’m not the best pinner, though, so a lot of times what I’m trying to do is wear on the guy’s head and win on a major (decision).”

Pendleton said Traub has enjoyed “a fantastic season.”

The meet on Sunday was close, but the Sun Devils took the win. Hunter Willits lost to #3 Jacori Teemer in OT despite Teemer stalling the entire bout. Grant Willits and Gas Tank Gary had major decisions. It was disappointing that ASU’s heavyweight Cohlton Schultz was competing in Greco at the Grand Prix of Zagreb in Croatia and did not wrestle Traub. Trey Munoz had another tech fall.

I share with sadness that Eleanor Piha, a longtime Oregon State Wrestling supporter has died. Eleanor happened to be a high school classmate of my great uncle in Hillsboro and she was married to Lou Piha, a 1948 conference wrestling champion for the Beavers at 125.5 lbs. I remember the Pihas being at every meet and banquet, and they supported numerous other programs at OSU as well.  They are greatly missed.

 

Eleanor Hanley Piha

March 6, 1920 – January 22, 2022

Eleanor Hanley Piha, 101, of Lebanon, died January 22, 2022, at Willamette Manor, in Lebanon.

Eleanor was born March 6, 1920, in Hillsboro, Oregon, in Washington County to parents, Albert and Anna Hanley. She had two sisters, Florence Britton (now deceased), and Aileen DeVos, of Springfield.

Eleanor attended a one room school near Hillsboro and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1938. She spent one year at Pacific University and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth. Eleanor spent 13 years as an elementary education teacher at Lyda School, in Washington County, Liberty School, in Tillamook, Central School, in Forest Grove, and Harding School, in Corvallis. She later did some substitute teaching.

Eleanor was married to Louise Piha on June 19, 1955 and had one son, Lynn Allen Piha ,in 1957 who lives in Lebanon. Eleanor is a former member of the Tualatin Plains Presbyterian Church, near Hillsboro. She is also a past board member of the Lebanon Hospital Auxiliary, past board member of the Lebanon-Sweet Home concert association, member of Chapter V. - P.E.O. Sisterhood, WOU Alumni Association, N.A.R.F.E, and the OSU Beaver Club. She enjoyed music, theater, reading, traveling, gardening, flowers and OSU college sports.

After Lou retired in 1985, they enjoyed traveling in many parts of the USA and also the South Pacific Islands. They were OSU Beaver season ticket holders for 37 years in football, men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, and wrestling. They enjoyed their family and great friends. Lou passed away in 2018.

Eleanor is survived by her son, Lynn Piha, and Billie Ortega, sister, Aileen and Herb DeVos, nephews, Bob Britton and Brad DeVos, and nieces Kendra Horn and Janelle Monell.
