Day One At Cliff Keen in Las Vegas

Day One at the Cliff Keen tournament in Las Vegas took its toll on the Oregon State Beavers, but after two tough sessions, three Beavers remain alive to wrestle on Saturday!

Ronnie Bresser (in the brackets listed as Ronnie Rios) is the lone Beaver still in the championship bracket. Ronnie will wrestle in the semi-finals Saturday morning. The article at the Oregon state site read it here says that Bresser was defeated by Terao in his last match. That is not correct. It was a very close match, and if I remember correctly, it was 2-1 or 2-2 near the end, in the finall seconds there was a flurry of activity and Ronnie came out on top, 5-2. It was his hand that was raised in victory with Beaver fans rejoicing in the stands! Ronnie's likely opponent in the semi's is Joey Dance, the #2 seed.

Also wrestling tomorrow is Joey Palmer at 133, with Joey battling his way back through the consolations after losing his first match 6-8.

The third Beaver still going strong is Corey Griego at 184. Corey's last do-or-die battle had to have been one of the longest matches of the day, going to the double tie-breaker before coming up with a reversal at the very end to win 3-2. The score was tied 1-1 after the end of 7 minutes, still 1-1 after the sudden victory round, still 1-1 after the tie-breaker, 1-1 after the 2nd SV, then in the 2nd TB , Scheffel got an escape in his 30 seconds, so Corey needed an escape to keep it tied, but he got a reversal to win! Beaver fans who had been gnawing away at their nails rejoiced!

Action resumes again tomorrow morning at the Cashman Center. Finals are set to begin at 3:00 in the afternoon.

There was one new face on the mat for the Beavers. Ali Alshujery got his first taste of D-1 tournament wrestling, going 0-2.

Not to be picky or anything, but while I'm thinking about the article at the OSU site, the photo of wrestlers at the top has the OSU wrestler identified as Joey Delgado. I believe that Tyler Chay is the wrestler in that shot.

As noted before, my emails are still blocked, so you'll have to check back here for more news until I can work out a new arrangement.

Go Beavs!
