Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Three Beavers were still in the Consolation brackets at Las Vegas' Junior Nationals in Freestyle. Unfortunately they all lost their first match of the day, which caused their elimination from the tournament.
Devan Turner, Connor Noonan and Bob Coleman all had a match in the morning, but all lost. That ended their tournament. For more information, check the tournament brackets.
Don't forget, "The FALL" Board is looking for a few good individuals interested in working for the good of Oregon State Wrestling! Let me know if you are interested!

Good luck to all!
A few more thoughts shared by some of you about the Boise bombshell: - emails should go to the Idaho state board of regents. Emails to AD while being answered, have been a canned response. The chance for change in the decision lies with the board of regents. The BSU president has made the decision and is so far been unwilling even for talks with wrestling advocates on how the program can be kept as part of the athletic department.
-- an article about how someone felt the whole story developed
Last, a note from Len Kauffman on former Oregon State Wrestler Tom Phillips ('74):
As many of you now know, Tom Phillips (OSU '74) had a heart attack last Friday. Doctors discovered 80% blockage in a major heart artery and Saturday night, April 22, they inserted a double-stint in that artery. He left the hospital Sunday evening and is now recovering at home. He plans to attend the IOC gathering in May.

Response to Boise Dropping Wrestling
Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
Since the announcement was made that Boise State was dropping their men's wrestling program, I have heard from several people with ideas on how to respond to this latest blow to the sport. Thought I would share those ideas with you.
Keep in mind, that if you feel compelled to react with phone calls or letters, keep them positive. Negative thoughts generally do not win you any friends.
From Mike Clock - Pacific U. Wrestling:
From Michael Denison - FALL Board member:
Feel free to comment on the newspapers social media accounts. Let your voice be heard.
Lots of fans are chiming in about the mistake.
Someone with money wants baseball and they do not want to fund 3 women’s sports to get it.
So they drop a men’s program to lessen the load. Sound familiar?
Everyone of us needs to find a way to take football out of the Title IX equation. It is unfair
To count it, since there is no women’s equivalent numbers wise. I am for equality. But Football is too
Popular to drop and the only sport that many colleges make any money on. There needs To be a change. This is one place to start, IMHO.
Wrestling alumni need to keep working on many aspects of College Wrestling support.
We need:
More talented HS coaches and athletes in Oregon, so that OSU can afford to survive. Can’t take all out of state guys.
More support for junior clubs across the NW.
More support for tournaments at all levels across the NW
More support for senior clubs for international travel and competition
Stronger support in fan clubs.
More attendance for wrestling events.
We need to fund an intern to cover OSU Wrestling in the SI department. A dedicated person year round.
We need to fund wrestling advertising in the Oregonian, Statesman, etc. Build influence as a paying customer and get the word out.
We need the OSU Athletic department to show up at nationals and see how much support it gets. 115,000 tickets sold is a large number.
We need to give colleges absolutely no reason to drop Wrestling.
Sorry about the rant and I am sure you already know this and do your best to support wrestling.
Oooh and why was the football spring game around the wrestling NCAAs time frame?
There is a lot we can do if we put our minds to it.
I am disappointed in BSU. It will be missed in many ways.
Maybe a big donor will come up and save them like Sunkist did for ASU.
Michael Denison
From Mike R Jones - former Oregon State Wrestler:
Sorry to hear news regarding Boise. Still think these teams need to explore adding Women's wrestling program. It remains the number one growing sport in North America, would supply an answer to many title nine concerns with no need for new facilities, new coaches etc. With just a few more college programs it will reach emerging sport status. I have pulled the plug on coaching after 41 years here at SFU , I know I should have given it more of a chance but getting too old.
Started the women's program 27 years ago and have coached exclusively women for past 12 seasons. Have had privilege of working with USA's first Women's Olympic champion Helen Maroulis, as well as Canada's first gold medalist on both Men's and Women's side in Daniel Igali, and Carol Huynh.

Another thought from Mike Clock:
Mike & others,
One other piece that went with that story - where Fresno would be. I have been told that Fresno will be a part of the Big 12 Conference, so another loss for the Pac-12. Thanks to Jana Iwasaki for the link to the Big 12.
Upcoming news - a contingent of young wrestlers from Oregon State will be heading to Las Vegas later this week to compete in the National Junior Freestyle/Greco tournament. More on that in another email.
One last item - the FALL Board will be looking for new members, as they always are once the season is over. The Board would like to thank Brandon Perkins, our former Treasurer, for his years of service. He has resigned from the Board. If you love the sport of wrestling - at Oregon State in particular - and have time and energy to spare, we'd love to have you!!

I think it would be good for you to encourage your OSU database to each write a letter to the BSU AD and President regarding this decision. I am going to encourage all members of the RCWOR leadership group to do so AND we are going to encourage our supporters to do so also. This is NOT primarily about money, in spite of the rationale given.
As was so eloquently said long ago: NOT TO SPEAK IS TO SPEAK.
Mike
The BSU President is: Robert Kusta and AD: Curt Aspey---based on online information.

- It has to be close to what basketball sells for their last 6 ball games. So tied for 2nd in the NCAAs. That’s big time.

Another thought from Mike Clock:
Mike & others,
Thanks for your thoughts.
I am going to suggest that we not make this too complicated right now. I believe that the one thing that ALL of us who care can do that could make a difference is to write a letter to both Robert Kusta(President BSU) and Curt Aspey(AD BSU) expressing our concern with the wisdom of their decision. I suggest focusing on the fact that BSU is the ONLY 4 year college/university in Idaho with a wrestling program and hence they(BSU) have both an opportunity & an obligation to educate the next generation of coaches/leaders in Our Sport.
This is NOT about $$, as baseball is not generally a revenue generating sport(very likely not even at OSU who is currently ranked #1 in the country!!). This is about a misguided AD who thinks the sport will go quietly. Let's show him it WILL NOT.
If the AD & President get hundreds/thousands of letters it WILL make a difference.
Dr Mike Clock
Prof Emeritus Mathematics, Pacific U/Long time sports advocate.
PS The very recent announcement by BSU that they are reviewing the decision should NOT keep you from writing the letters. It may well be a ploy by the Admin to reduce the amount of input they get re. this decision. These people are not stupid, but often VERY devious.Don't sit back and assume they will do the 'right thing' without pressure.
"Not to speak is to speak", as was so eloquently said by Dietrich Bonhoeffer during the rise of the Third Reich. He paid with his life, but those who do not speak up now will likely pay only with a guilty conscience.

Boise Drops Wrestling! & Next NCAA Sites
Sad news for Pac-12 Wrestling broke today. Boise State has cut its Wrestling program effective immediately. Apparently they want to add a baseball program and sacrificed the wrestling program to do it. Link to articles about the cut.
That reduces the number of schools in the Pac-12 with wrestling teams to five. Hopefully the upcoming Fresno program that re-starts in fall of 2017 will join the Pac-12. But I have no idea if it will or not.
Thanks to Ron Iwasaki and Edward Trudell for pointing out this Boise story!
For those of you who like to travel around the country to see the wrestling NCAA's, four new host sites have been announced.
More news as it comes.

Wrestling Awards Handed Out at Banquet
Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
It's a wrap. The 2016-17 Wrestling season came to a close for the Oregon State team and fans yesterday at the Awards Banquet.
Dinner was served in the Club at Reser Stadium first, followed by a silent auction and distribution of door prizes. Then came the Awards.
The first Award was presented by "The FALL" Board for "The FALL" "Volunteer of the Year". This year's winners were Ken & Andrea Tobin, the Parent Reps on the Board. Thanks Ken & Andrea for diving in and contributing on special projects this year - the Fan Bus to Stanford for the Pac-12's and the Banquet. Ken & Andrea are the proud parents of wrestler Izaak Tobin.
The other awards were presented by Coaches Kevin Roberts and Ian Miller.
"Coaches Appreciation" Award - Brad Luscombe, who drove the team to many events as well as the Fan bus to Stanford.
Booster of the Year - Dennis Fuller, who ran up an impressive 47 year attendance streak at the NCAA's until health issues kept him home this year. Dennis hopes to be back at the NCAA's next year!
"Highest GPA" Award - Izaak Tobin, junior, with a 3.57
Joe Wells "Team Impact" Award - Cody Crawford, junior
Chad Flack "Most Improved" Award - Jack Hathaway, junior
Len Kauffman/Larry Bielenberg "Most Pins" Award - Jack Hathaway, junior, with 9 pins; David Henry actually had 10, but Jack's last pin of the year came at the NCAA's where Jack pinned the #7 seed
Bill Brickey "Most Dedicated" Award - Joey Palmer, senior
Dale Thomas "Hustle" Award - Joey Delgado, senior, this is an award based on a calculation of wins and GPA, etc, sort of an all around award
Robin Reed "Outstanding Wrestler" Award - Joey Palmer, senior
"Hardest Worker" Award - Bob Coleman, freshman
Those were all the awards that were given out yesterday.
Joey Palmer also picked up another award for the end of the season, this one for Second team Pac-12 Conference All-Academic Awards. Congratulations, Joey P.! You can read more about it in this article by osubeavers.com.
The Awards presentation was followed by speeches given by Seniors on the team. Joey Delgado, Abraham Rodriguez and Joey Palmer shared some memories from their years on the mat at Oregon State.
A big thank you to Joey D, Abraham and Joey P for their years of hard work and memories for the fans!
Head Coach Jim Zalesky finished out the evening by some thoughts on the season. Sometimes life doesn't leave you with the perfect season, but you have to learn from it and move on. Next year the Pac-12's will again be hosted by Oregon State, so be ready to put that on your calendar! The 2018 NCAA's will be held in Cleveland, OH.
At the conclusion of the program, the team assembled for a photo. Many of you got photos. I didn't get one. If anyone who got a good photo of the team would share it with me, I would be very happy to post it on "The FALL"'s website for all to see.
If enough people send me photos from the banquet, I may do a whole post or two with pictures!
Thanks to all who attended the Banquet and helped with the season's final celebration. Congratulations again to all the award winners!
