It's a wrap. The 2016-17 Wrestling season came to a close for the Oregon State team and fans yesterday at the Awards Banquet.
Dinner was served in the Club at Reser Stadium first, followed by a silent auction and distribution of door prizes. Then came the Awards.
The first Award was presented by "The FALL" Board for "The FALL" "Volunteer of the Year". This year's winners were Ken & Andrea Tobin, the Parent Reps on the Board. Thanks Ken & Andrea for diving in and contributing on special projects this year - the Fan Bus to Stanford for the Pac-12's and the Banquet. Ken & Andrea are the proud parents of wrestler Izaak Tobin.
The other awards were presented by Coaches Kevin Roberts and Ian Miller.
"Coaches Appreciation" Award - Brad Luscombe, who drove the team to many events as well as the Fan bus to Stanford.
Booster of the Year - Dennis Fuller, who ran up an impressive 47 year attendance streak at the NCAA's until health issues kept him home this year. Dennis hopes to be back at the NCAA's next year!
"Highest GPA" Award - Izaak Tobin, junior, with a 3.57
Joe Wells "Team Impact" Award - Cody Crawford, junior
Chad Flack "Most Improved" Award - Jack Hathaway, junior
Len Kauffman/Larry Bielenberg "Most Pins" Award - Jack Hathaway, junior, with 9 pins; David Henry actually had 10, but Jack's last pin of the year came at the NCAA's where Jack pinned the #7 seed
Bill Brickey "Most Dedicated" Award - Joey Palmer, senior
Dale Thomas "Hustle" Award - Joey Delgado, senior, this is an award based on a calculation of wins and GPA, etc, sort of an all around award
Robin Reed "Outstanding Wrestler" Award - Joey Palmer, senior
"Hardest Worker" Award - Bob Coleman, freshman
Those were all the awards that were given out yesterday.
Joey Palmer also picked up another award for the end of the season, this one for Second team Pac-12 Conference All-Academic Awards. Congratulations, Joey P.! You can read more about it in this article by osubeavers.com.
The Awards presentation was followed by speeches given by Seniors on the team. Joey Delgado, Abraham Rodriguez and Joey Palmer shared some memories from their years on the mat at Oregon State.
A big thank you to Joey D, Abraham and Joey P for their years of hard work and memories for the fans!
Head Coach Jim Zalesky finished out the evening by some thoughts on the season. Sometimes life doesn't leave you with the perfect season, but you have to learn from it and move on. Next year the Pac-12's will again be hosted by Oregon State, so be ready to put that on your calendar! The 2018 NCAA's will be held in Cleveland, OH.
At the conclusion of the program, the team assembled for a photo. Many of you got photos. I didn't get one. If anyone who got a good photo of the team would share it with me, I would be very happy to post it on "The FALL"'s website for all to see.
If enough people send me photos from the banquet, I may do a whole post or two with pictures!
