Summer Bulletin Board - August 12, 2019

From Craig Scharer:

a couple wrestling questions towards the bottom.

 ****************************

From John Dustin: text from the above interview -

Q: Given the lack of wrestling programs in the West, what is the future of OSU wrestling?
Barnes: The challenge has been our conference and losing that automatic qualifier and mitigating those issues. We’ve added Arkansas-Little Rock to get back to six (teams). That was our biggest challenge. The automatic qualifier in wrestling is a huge piece. We continue to invest in wrestling. Any sport that we sponsor we want to be excellent at, and watch its development.

Q: Is getting increasingly difficult to continue a wrestling program?
Barnes: I don’t think you’re seeing a tremendous drop off from the folks who sponsor wrestling. For a while, there was a decline. There haven’t been a ton of programs that have dropped lately. It can still be a vibrant program in the West. Obviously, the Pac-12 has had its challenges to be candid. We’ve remedied to that a degree, but we’ve got to do more. We have to align ourselves with quality institutions to really beef up not only our competition, but our program itself.

Q: Oregon State president Dr. Edward Ray is retiring next June. As an athletic director, do you get nervous when you don’t know who’s next as school president?
Barnes: No, we have a great plan, we’re executing our plan and I love the direction we’re headed. We’ll miss Ed and we’ll look forward to breaking in the new president whoever that may be, and partnering to continue to progress in whatever we’re doing.

Conclusion to the Yacht Race:

Garrett's got 2 more days of sailing. Half the fleet is in, Mary's there now having fun "shopping" with a hotel full of families waiting for their respective boats.  If Garrett  shows up during the day they'll get some cool photos passing the finish line - the light house at Diamond Head, 1st the Molokai Channel can be a fun challenge for sailors also, but breathtaking views seeing land for the 1st time in 13 days .. Kinda like a scene from Jurassic Park!  Yikes, wrong island..

.....  Garrett's been doing the several local weekly summer racing series for a few years so as this event came closer he knew a few boats going and one asked him if he would participate and he couldn't refuse. Have not heard the whole story yet but there was some bad weather/waves and one of the crew was knocked off the boat when a line snapped, nobody was hurt and they wear life lines and practice overboard drills so it was not a problem. Just scary for us not knowing.

I think they finished an hour or so ago so it was light outside and they will have some cool photos, usually a helicopter goes our to get shots and they all should be wearing their crew shirts to look pretty.

We'll update later..

Whooopppeee, they made it.  Starting to hear about some rough weather & waves but they made it with the distinction of 2nd in class and last in fleet. Torn sails, man overboard any all happy and safe now.. Boat passing the finish line Diamond Head and the guys almost on land for the first time in 14days, makes you kinda woozy being back on land.. Now its shower & sleep for 20 hrs wake up and the final awards dinner Friday and FLY home.. Gar on the far right below.. A helicopter flies out to the finish to get some pretty photos so those should be here soon.

Not sure how they got this video up so soon after the race. The 1st part is Mary & I on our friends' boat (Good News) with the farewell banner at the start of the race. The guys had a great time. I think one
prerequisite for the crew was to play a musical instrument..
