Corvallis -- Chris Pendleton, one of the most successful collegiate wrestlers in the history of the sport, has been selected to lead the Oregon State program, Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes announced Monday. His appointment is contingent on the completion of all university hiring processes.

Coach Pendleton arrives at Oregon State after spending the last six seasons as an assistant coach at Arizona State. The Sun Devils have won three of the last four Pac-12 titles, including scoring 141.5 points (most by ASU since 1993) on its way to the conference crown earlier this month. ASU finished the shortened season ranked No. 6 in the country and defeated seven top 20 teams, including snapping No. 1 Penn State's 60-match win streak.

"The interest in this position was incredibly high, but as the process moved forward Coach Pendleton quickly rose to the top," Barnes said. "Coach Pendleton's focus on the development of student-athletes on and off the mat aligns with the Oregon State culture.

"He is an exceptional leader, teacher, and tactician. His pedigree as a high-level recruiter will benefit this storied program going forward, and we are excited to welcome him to the Oregon State community."

During Coach Pendleton's tenure at Arizona State, Sun Devil wrestlers accounted for two national championships, seven All-America honors, and 25 league titles. The 2019-20 team was one of three in the country to have six wrestlers nationally seeded for the canceled NCAA Tournament. ASU also won 15 dual meets last season, the most for the Sun Devils in 31 years, and set a program record for attendance averaging 2,862 fans per meet.

"When I started on my path in wrestling I had no idea where this journey would take me; I am beyond grateful that it has led me to become the head coach at Oregon State University," Pendleton said. "This program and the state of Oregon has a rich wrestling history that I'm excited to a part of.

"I would like to thank Scott Barnes, Dan Bartholomae, and the rest of the search committee for giving me this incredible opportunity to mentor and develop student-athletes' lives. I'm looking forward to helping build The Dam!"

InterMat Magazine named Pendleton one of the top 10 wrestlers of the 2000s after compiling a record of 118-12 in his four years (2001-05) at Oklahoma State. He was a two-time NCAA champion and earned three All-American honors at 174 pounds. The Cowboys won three NCAA Championships during his competitive career.

"Coach Pendleton's experience goes beyond the college scene as he is an impactful presence with Team USA," Barnes said. "He is a three-time Team USA member as a competitor and has served as a coach with the men's and women's wrestling teams. His wealth of experience will be extremely beneficial to the aspirations of the student-athletes in our program."

He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Oklahoma State following his senior year. Wrestlers accounted for 19 All-America honors in his five seasons and the 2006 NCAA title. He left Oklahoma State for an assistant coach position at Wyoming, where he helped the program win multiple league titles and wrestlers earned six All-America titles between 2011-15.

Coach Pendleton was the California prep champion at 145 pounds at Lemoore High School. He is a 2006 graduate of Oklahoma State with a bachelor's degree in sociology.

"I want to thank chairperson Senior Associate Athletic Director Jacque Bruns, Executive Deputy Athletic Director Dan Bartholomae, and the entire search committee for their professionalism in making this outstanding hire," Barnes added.

What They Are Saying About Chris Pendleton

"It's exciting to see Chris move forward in his career to become a head coach. OSU has hired one of the best young coaches in the country, and in doing so has made all of our jobs tougher on the West Coast." Oklahoma State five-time NCAA Championship Head Coach John Smith

"I would like to wish Chris good luck as the new head wrestling coach at OSU. I'm personally going to miss his passion and knowledge for the sport of wrestling. OSU is getting a great coach, but a better young man." Scottie Graham, Arizona State University Associate Athletic Director

"I'm extremely happy for the opportunities that lie ahead for Chris. I had the privilege of being his teammate at Oklahoma State. There is no doubt in my mind, after following his successes since then, that he can make Oregon State into a national contender. He has all of the attributes needed to make a great coach. He has a proven track record that speaks for itself while coaching at Arizona State. I look forward to seeing his success in the future." Pat Popolizio, North Carolina State head coach and National Wrestling Coaches Association President

"I was really impressed with his interview and background.  I think Chris is going to be a great coach at Oregon State.  He had been a winner every place he has been and I have no doubts he will be a winner at OSU.  I'm looking forward to coming back to Corvallis and watching a competitive team bringing a lot of excitement to the matches." Greg Strobel, a two-time Oregon State NCAA champion and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member

2020 Wrestling Championships Commemorative Program

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,
Hope everyone is catching up on work, home projects, phone calls to loved ones, etc.

Some of you probably already saw this, the program for the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships that didn't take place.  You can see Devan and Grant's pictures along with the rest of the athletes who didn't get to pursue March Matness in 2020.  In the pages that follow, it is fun to check the records for past Oregon State greats.

I also want to draw your attention to an ad on p.27 for a book on the 1947 Cornell College Dream Team, of which Dale Thomas was the captain.  Here's a link to an old InterMat article written about that team.  There was a stretch in the late 1990's when Dale Thomas' college coach Paul Scott came out to Oregon annually for a reunion with the Beaver wrestling alumni.  He'd spend a few nights at our house and regale us with stories.  The last time I saw him was in Phoenix when my family was there for the 2000 Fiesta Bowl, but he kept in touch with letters typed on a typewriter.  He passed on in 2003 at age 97.  What a cool guy!

Head Coach Search -- Update from Bob Tomasovic

Dear OSU Wrestling Community

Over the last week Oregon State has moved quickly forward in the process to select a Head Wrestling Coach to lead OSU Wrestling back to a premiere NCAA Wrestling top 10 program.  The Wrestling Endowment Board with approval of the Athletic Department would like to share with you the progress.

Scott Barnes, Vice President & Director of Athletics, personally called members of the WEF Board, leaders of The Fall, Wrestling Alumni and significant wrestling supporters immediately following the announcement. Scott informed all that the decision was a commitment to the Wrestling Program – continuing facility improvements, sustaining the increased support staff and hiring a Head Wrestling Coach to lead OSU back to contending for the NCAA Championship. Scott is personally involved and dedicated to OSU Wrestling.

The selection process:
·        The selection committee will include OSU Wrestling Alumnus Greg Strobel and the WEF Board Chair. Additional members are being contacted by Dan Bartholomae, Executive Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Operating Officer.
·        The intent is to complete initial screening within a few weeks and a final selection in a process that is well planned to introduce a new Head Coach.
·        Based on the current health concerns, the selection committee will maximize virtual means to personally interview candidates.

The interest is phenomenal. The number of well-known names that have been recommended and are candidates affirms that OSU Wrestling is a program that is supported and seen as returning to an elite power.

A significant factor in the Head Coaching position interest is the Wrestling Endowment Fund.  There are not many NCAA Schools with endowment funding and the OSU WEF is the most active and largest athletic endowment at OSU.

We can all contribute to a successful hiring process with our support.  If you have been considering or not yet contributed, now is the time!

Season Wrap-Up

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The 2019-20 has ground to an abrupt halt due to the Covid-19 virus. The last you may have heard was the Pac-12's had finished and we had one Champ - Devan Turner at 133, and two wrestlers headed to the NCAA's, Devan and Grant Willits who finished second at 141. That was March 7.

On March 10, the Athletic Department announced that Head Coach Jim Zalesky would be leaving at the end of the season and they would hold a national search to find Jim's replacement. The FALL Fan Club would like to thank Jim and Teri for their years of heading up the Oregon State Family of Wrestling and for their friendship. We enjoyed that long string of Conference Team Championships!!

On March 12, NCAA seeds and brackets were announced. Devan would be #12 and Grant picked up #29.

Somewhere in there, the NCAA decided that the championships would be played out, but without fans in attendance, due to the virus pandemic. A little further thinking resulted in a follow-up decision on March 12 that all tournaments and even spring sports would be cancelled. So, the NCAA's will just be an asterisk in the books. We'll never know how Devan and Grant would have done.

On March 15, Amar Dhesi qualified for a spot on the Canadian Olympic team in Tokyo this summer. You can see of video of a very happy Amar Dhesi on the OSU Twitter feed. Let's hope the Olympics will be able to go ahead as scheduled. Congrats, Amar, and best of luck to you!

The only other thing left of the usual wrestling season would have been the Annual Awards Banquet. The FALL Board had started making plans and the date was penciled in on April 4. However with all the practices in place to "flatten the curve" of the Covid-19 virus, planning became impossible, so the decision was made to cancel the Banquet and the season has come to an end.

Thanks to all the new Board members who stepped forward to make the FALL Fan Club carry on this season, Michael Denison - hope you are doing well on recovery, Michael! - John Kowalewski, Jim Hamer*, Scott Lewis, and Jess Lewis headed up by President Jana Iwasaki.

LAST WEEK RECAP

Oregon State Wrestling (8-6, 2-2 Pac-12) edged conference opponent Cal Poly, 24-15, in the final dual of the regular season Saturday afternoon inside Gill Coliseum.

Brandon Kaylor (125) and Grant Willits (141) each recorded pins for the Beavers to help seal the victory.

Kaylor won his eighth straight match at 125 pounds by pinning Benny Martinez in only 1:26 of action. The redshirt freshmen went to work early as he earned a quick takedown and four back points en route to the impressive pin which gave Oregon State six team points.

At 133 pounds, Devan Turner dominated his bout with nearly three minutes of riding time and came away with a 10-4 decision over Cole Reyes. Turner picked up four takedowns to help extend the team lead to 10-0.

Grant Willits led 2-1 heading into the second period and took matters into his own hands with a pin over Jake Ryan (3:56) for the Beavers' second fall of the afternoon. After three bouts. the Beavers led 12-3.

Lane Stigall squared off in an evenly paced match at 149 pounds against Josh Cortez and fell by a point on a 3-2 decision. After the bout was tied up at 2-2 heading into the final period, Lamer used an escape with under a minute to take the victory and inch the Mustangs closer to the lead.

Cal Poly would go on to take the next two bouts at 157 and 165 pounds. Logan Meek was pinned by Brawley Lamer (4:05) and Aaron Olmos dropped an 8-7 decision as Oregon State's lead slimmed to 15-12.

Facing off against Bernie Truax, Olmos took a 5-2 lead into the final period before surrendering six points to give up the victory.

Jackson McKinney regained the momentum at 174 pounds with a 6-0 decision over Dylan Miracle as the Beavers went ahead 18-12. McKinney earned a riding time point and two takedowns to collect the win.

Colt Doyle got off to a quick start against Trent Tracy by notching an early takedown and back points to lead 4-2. Doyle would cap off the bout with a big third period including a stalling point and a late takedown to seal a 9-3 decision.

J.J. Dixon fought back late against No. 12-ranked Thomas Lane but ultimately dropped a 9-7 decision despite earning a riding time point. Dixon was the aggressor in the first period as he led 3-1 before Lane surged ahead with a takedown and four back points. With Lane leading 7-3 at the start of the third period, Dixon showed no quit with two takedowns but couldn't come away with the win.

To end the dual, Jamarcus Grant continued his streak of solid wrestling with a 6-5 decision against Sam Aguilar. The match became knotted up in the second period before Grant ended things with an escape and takedown.
