Wow, and just like that our home season is over.  My dad Ron Iwasaki did the match recap below.

125  Brandon Kaylor took down his opponent 6 seconds into the match with a Fireman’s and then turned it into a 4 point near fall at the 1 min mark.   Shortly after he gained the fall.    Beavs led 6-0.

133  Devan showed lots of confidence in his dominant – yet at times nonchalant – performance.  His opponent shot in at 25 or so seconds and Devan stymied Reyes with snagging his hip and temporarily tilting him.    With both on their feet, Devan grabbed a single leg – lifted it and tripped the back leg for a takedown.    Devan dominated on top w/Reyes getting a stall warning – the first period ended 4-1 and Devan had a 2:18 riding time.    Devan escaped 3 seconds in the second;  the rest of the period was wasted with Devan getting another takedown and letting him go.  End of the second, 7-2.   In the third period Devan let Reyes go 5 seconds in.     This was a good example of a bad example as Devan wrestled down to his opponent, ultimately winning 10-4 including 2:52 riding time.

141  Cal Poly’s Ryan tried a couple of cement mixers on Grant Willits.   No dice.   Shortly after Grant got the takedown in his typical unconventional scramble…later threw in his leg and pinned the bearded man.

149  Lane Stigall vs another mature man.   Both were way cautious causing the referee to comment: “Action gentlemen”…w/o much to report.   0-0 going into the second.   Lane escaped;  got taken down by a single leg; got an escape.  Now 2-2.    The “man” escaped in the third to lead 3-2 and danced around getting a stall warning with 30 seconds left.   Lane shot in with an entertaining scramble but time ran out.   Too little, too late as if Lane had shown more activity in the first – the opponents stall warning in the last period would have tied the score…or possibly his scramble in last – if started earlier – would have provided sufficient time to prevail.  

157  Logan and his opponent Brawley Lamer resembled a couple of bull elks locked up.  Then Meek gained a double leg takedown and after a while Lamer escaped to end the first.  In the second Lamer deferred choice to Logan who started down.  This was unfortunate as the long-bodied Lamer – like his dad Chad – threw in his legs and slowly but surely stretched and twisted Logan to his back for the fall.

165  Aaron Olmos’ opponent was a different body type.  Stocky.   Aaron struck first with a single leg but easily let his opponent go.   Later, unfortunately there was not much to show from either as the most startling occurrence was announcer Andrew Stanfield booming:  30 seconds!    The Poly coach could be heard: “Keep him guessing”… and we all were.   Someone in the stands kept saying:  “Be First”…The second period was unremarkable with Aaron leading 5-2 and later 7-5 but in the third, Truax caught up to win in a scramble 8-7. 

174  Jackson McKinney started with a nice duck under attempt..... After Miracle countered, then Jackson gained the takedown 2 min in. McKinney beat Dylan Miracle, final score 6-0 including riding time.    

184  Both Colt Doyle and his opponent had similar rangy builds but Colt dominated throughout.   He hit an early spin under move that also gained 2 point near fall.   In the third he had another slick duck under that resulted in a takedown and a 9-3 win w/riding time.

197  J.J. had the upper hand vs his 12^th ranked opponent Tom Lane for the majority of the match.   J.J. double legged Lane early and rode him for 1:41 ‘til he escaped with 57 seconds left in the first.   Things looked good ‘til in the second Lane escaped, takedown, cradled J.J. for a 7-2 lead.   He fought back to within 3 points but the cradle was costly as J.J. had 1:41 riding time and lost 9-7.  

285  was last but not least as Jamarcus entertained throughout.   Jamarcus double legged his barrel-bodied opponent who was quick for his size and reversed Jamarcus who then escaped.    Jamarcus has athleticism but needs to work on basics like hand fighting off the whistle.  In the inverse of J.J. .  Jamarcus won 6-5 though Poly’s hwt had 1:25 riding time.

During half-time, heavyweight NCAA champs Jess Lewis ('69 & '70) and Howard Harris ('80) were welcomed onto the mat.  OSU Athletic Director Scott Barnes was in the stands today.  The celebration continued at our social following the meet where Coach Zalesky shared that he was a high school freshman in the stands watching his brother Lenny compete at the 1980 NCAAs in Gill.  He also advised that Howard Harris’ record of pinning his way to the 1980 NCAA title has only been accomplished by 4 other athletes and has not been done since.  Thank you to Scott Spiegelberg who got Howard back in the mix and we hope we were enough fun today to get him back next season.  It was a reunion of many Beaver greats, including members of Jess’ 1967 Giant Killers football team and 6’10” Doug Oxsen of the 1975 basketball team that made the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Jess Lewis gave a moving speech, calling the team up and told them he was passing the torch and that their wrestling needed to be exciting for themselves and for the boosters.  Amen!  He shook each wrestler’s hand and I hope they were as inspired as I am!

Senior Christian Robertson was honored prior to the meet and gave words of appreciation to his wrestling family at the social.  Bob Tomasovic gave an update on the Wrestling Endowment Fund which is at a healthy $5M and is supporting 3 of the current wrestlers.

Olympian/Penn State 3x All-American/Pac-12 and B1G announcer Ken Chertow showed up with the other half of his membership dues.  I told him Scott Lewis already announced to the crowd last time that the board was chipping in to show our appreciation for his dedication to the sport and to the Beaver program.  He said thanks and made a donation anyway. We are grateful to have him join us. 

Fall board member John Kowalewski has been as prolific as a Christmas elf with his woodworking projects and this week, we auctioned his bourbon stand for $101 bought by Jackson McKinney’s grandpa.  John made 7 other wine stands that were sold at bargains with all proceeds going to the booster club.  Winemaker Pete Buffington from Silverton is donating his Abiqua Wind wine next season for more of these fundraiser projects!

We will gather for our last home meet tomorrow, Sat vs Cal Poly at 1pm.  The Fall board will be in the lobby at noon and Mike Denison will join us in greeting fans.  I am still shamelessly plugging for anyone interested to join our booster club through the link below.  The funds collected help us pay the caterer for socials and go towards paying for the team and coaches at our end of the season awards banquet.

Howard Harris returns to Gill Coliseum, the site of his 1980 NCAA Championship.  This local Oregonian was coached by longtime Beaver supporter and Fall Club member Jerry Lane at McNary High.  Harris pinned all 5 of his opponents, including future 4x Olympian Bruce Baumgartner, earning him OW.  What a year that was for Oregon State Wrestling fans!!  How Dale Thomas got the NCAAs to Corvallis is a great story -- ask any of the old timers for details.

Howard and Jess will be honored during the meet, and unfortunately the other Beaver heavyweight national champ, Larry Bielenberg will be out of town.  Howard's singlet from 1980 is on display in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater.

Following the meet, we hope you'll join us in the Loge, 2nd floor of Reser Stadium.  Howard Harris is bringing his family including wife, kids and grandkids.  Scott Lewis will again be holding the mic, doing a great job but mispronouncing everyone's names -- at least those he can remember.  Come for the comradery, come for the door prizes.  Board member John Kowalewski woodworked a special item that we'll be silent auctioning and my dad donated plants that we'll be selling as a fundraiser.  Come support the team and the legacy of Oregon State Wrestling!

If anyone is interested in the Minneapolis hotel, let me know asap as the block expires on Sun 2/23.

We hope this email finds you well! Oregon State Wrestling returns to Gill Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 22 at for Senior Night as we take on Pac-12 opponent Cal Poly!

UPCOMING WEEK

The Beavers and the Mustangs will take the mat at 1 p.m. with live coverage of the event to be provided by Pac-12Networks. It is the only Oregon State Athletics event in Corvallis this weekend, make sure you attend to see all the action from our final dual of the season!

Oregon State wrestling alumni and NCAA Champions Jess Lewis and Howard Harris will be honored at the intermission between the 5^th and 6^th bouts.

LAST WEEK RECAP

Oregon State Wrestling (8-7, 1-3 Pac-12) capped off a busy weekend of competition taking duals from Cal Baptist on Friday, before shutting out Arkansas Little Rock on Saturday.

The Beavers began the weekend by cruising to a 28-6 win over Cal Baptist behind two bonus point victories and winning eight of ten bouts. Brandon Kaylow won by major decision at 125 pounds, while Aaron Olmos earned six team points by way of forfeit.

The Beavers returned to Gill Coliseum the following day facing the newly formed Arkansas Little Rock Trojans. OSU gave the visitors a warm welcome to the Pac-12 Conference with a 42-0 win.

Oregon State collected two major decisions, two technical falls and a pin en route to the conference dual win. 125-pounder Brandon Kaylow won a 15-4 major decision, with 141-pounder Grant Willits following suite with a 10-0 major decision. The Beavers earned back-to-back technical falls at 174 and 184 pounds thanks to Jackson McKinney and Colt Doyle. Redshirt freshman J.J. Dixon picked up his first dual pin of his career at 197 pounds.

THE 100 CLUB

One of our new initiatives this year which serves as a replacement to our Pledge for Pins drive in the past is The 100 Club: It is designed to help the growth of the Beaver Regional Training Center (RTC). The money gifted goes directly to the Beaver RTC which is a Nonprofit Organization that supports the travel and training expenses associated with the RTC.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 this season. For example, that is 1,000 individuals donating $100 each. If you would like to join the 100 Club please print out this FORM and mail it to our PO Box. The address to which is on the form.

Little Rock Recap

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

It was a great day for the Oregon State Wrestling community on and off the mat.  Prior to the meet, Mike Denison joined The Fall board in the lobby, greeting fans and handing out bout sheets.  It was my first time seeing him since his massive stroke in early December and while he is still not able to speak much, his eyes and expressions told me he was digesting everything as I caught him up on board activity of the past two months.  Very few people have the passion and level of dedication that Mike has to Oregon State Athletics and we are so lucky to have his leadership in our community.  Welcome back to your native land, Mike!

Brandon Kaylor kicked off Saturday afternoon against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a 2^nd major in as many days.  15 - 4 final score after 2 takedowns in the first 25 seconds, followed up by 2 rounds of 2 point near falls.  Brandon struggled in the 2^nd period as he couldn’t escape the clutches of Jayden Carson and suffered a 2 point near fall during the period.  The 3^rd period was all Brandon as he picked up a 4 point near fall and rode the entire period.  Brandon won 8 of his last 9 and is surging at the right time. 

Devan Turner kept the fans a bit nervous in this one.  After a quick takedown 15 seconds into the match, the two wrestlers traded points until the end.  The 8 – 6 final score required some 3^rd period strength and determination for Devan to get the win.  Paul Bianchi took a shot on Devan and despite having the positional advantage was overpowered by Devan for 2 OSU points.  After giving up an escape, Devan then bulled his way into another takedown with 30 seconds remaining to secure the win. 

Grant Willits rolled to the 2^nd major decision of the day with a 10 – 0 win.  The match started with plenty of action but no scoring until Grant turned what looked to be a cradle by Conner Ward into a takedown of his own.  Grant finished the period on top and quickly escaped as he summersaulted into freedom.  The 3^rd period was all Willits as his takedown was followed up by a 4 point near fall and a ride out to end the match. 

Lane Stigall kept things going for the Beavers with a 9 – 3 win.  Lane dominated this match from the start finishing with 2:50 riding time at the end of the first plus a takedown and 2 back points.  The momentum continued into the 2^nd period as Lane started with a reversal followed by 2 back points.  It looked as though Lane might secure another major decision for the Beavers until a 3^rd period cradle by Tyler Brennan ended those thoughts. 

Logan Meek showed signs of life this weekend as he doubled his season win total with 2 straight victories  Logan’s quick single leg takedown was offset by a reversal and more blow for blow tradeoffs to finish the period 5 – 5 though Logan’s opponent had over a minute time advantage.   The 2^nd was all Logan as his cradle netted him a 4 point near fall.  Another 2 back points in the third followed by an injury timeout with 15 seconds remaining.  Both sides agreed to no action in the closing 15 seconds to avoid a forfeit.   The 12 – 6 final score and 2 win weekend garnered Logan an opportunity to display his speaking skills at the Fall Club social after the match.  There he commanded the mic just as he did his opponent, confidently responding to whatever Scott Lewis threw his way.

Aaron Olmos got to enjoy time on the mat for the first time this weekend in an 11 – 6 victory after a forfeit win on Friday.  Olmos dug deep in his wrestling arsenal with a cradle, lift and throw and a reversal.  He also managed to power out of a single leg and bulled through his opponent for a takedown. 

Jackson McKinney dominated his opponent ending the match in the 2^nd period with a 15 – 0 victory.  McKinney started with a takedown manufactured by him circling around his opponent.  That quickly evolved into a 4 point near fall and 2 additional back points.  The 2^nd period included another takedown and 4 more near fall points to end the match. 

Colt Doyle made his presence felt this weekend with 2 straight shutouts.  Saturday’s 16 – 0 performance was pure domination though it started with the most gentle takedown ever seen by this fan.  Colt hung his opponent in the air by a leg and softly laid him onto the mat for his first 2 points.  It ended quickly after that with 4, 4, 2 and 4 near fall points were awarded to close the match before the first period came to a close with a tech fall.

JJ Dixon had the only fall of the night.  Random sidenote, JJ’s cousin gives great Lyft rides in Pittsburgh.  The Iwasakis, Jess Lewis, Scott Lewis and Bob Hawkins were surprised at the NCAAs when their driver mentioned he had a cousin on the Beaver Wrestling team named JJ Dixon.  JJ started his match with a powerful takedown including 2 back points.  Had Dixon not been at the sideline, he may have pinned during the opening moments.  Action was instead moved back to center.  It was in the 2^nd period and after a sequence of 2, 2, and 2 back points that Dixon secured the fall. 

Jamarcus Grant enjoyed a night off as his opponent wasn’t feeling lucky and opted to head for the bus early.   (Jamarcus was awarded a forfeit.)

We followed the meet with a high-energy social in the Loge.  This week we had enough food, a microphone that worked, great door prizes and an energetic crowd celebrating the OSU Wrestling program.  Shout out to John Kowalewski who procured the door prizes and for the silent auction, he crafted a custom OSU Wrestling wooden wine bottle stand that holds 2 wine glasses.   

Thanks to everyone who was there to be a part of this weekend!  We encourage all to join us next Saturday for our final home meet at 1pm vs Cal Poly.  The Fall will host a social after the meet and we are told 4x All-American, 1980 National Champion heavyweight and OW Howard Harris will be with us.  I’ll get more information from Scott Spiegelberg and send an update.
