Beavers Gnaw down the Cardinal!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The new mat in Gill Coliseum
It all came down to the heavyweights, the final match of the night, in Over Time! Then 9oo+ raucous fans celebrated as Cody Crawford defeated Stanford's #9 Nathan Butler, 3-1.

It seemed an improbable victory, a struggling Oregon State team pitted against a hot Stanford team that has been crushing opponents. So how did it happen?

It started out at 125, with two wrestlers from Illinois. It was a close match, but in the third period, Kegan Calkins pulled ahead to win 5-2. It was his first victory over Brian Rossi  after having wrestled him often since they were both 4 years old. Way to go, Kegan!

At 133, Joey Palmer faced Stanford's Connor Schram, ranked #13. It was a close match, but Palmer prevailed 2-1. Palmer had an escape and a point from 2 stall calls on Schram. You could sense the turn of the tide in the crowd.

At 141, Jack Hathaway faced Stanford's highest ranked wrestler, #3 Joey McKenna. Would be nice to say Hathaway won, but he did his job in not giving up any bonus points, match score 1-5. Team score OSU 6 Stanford 3.

The score then bounced back and forth. Joey Delgado added another win for the Beavers at 149. At 157 Abraham Rodriguez scored all of his points in the final period but it was too late. Paul Fox took the win for Stanford 7-4.  Team Score OSU 9 Stanford 6.

New at 165, OSU's Weston Dobler got caught early in the first period and was pinned by #18 Keaton Subjeck, boosting the Cardinal to their first lead of the night, 9-12.

Another line-up change saw Bob Coleman at 174. He kept it very close for the first two periods, but #19 Peter Galli took the battle 6-2. Stanford had a 6 point lead, 15-9.

Enter Seth McLeod, the newest member of the Oregon State team, wrestling at 184. His debut was a solid 9-2 victory over Zach Nevills! Welcome to Oregon State, Seth!! OSU 12 Stanford 15.

At 197 Corey Griego stayed ahead of Josh Marchok and came up with a 9-5 victory. Score tied, 15 all!

That led to the final battle at heavyweight with the crowd giving Cody Crawford all the energy they had. With the score tied 1-1, an escape for each, Cody got the takedown in sudden victory of OT!

Way to go, Beavers! A great start to christen the new wrestling mat in Gill Coliseum.

Congratulations again to all match winners, Calkins, Palmer, Delgado, McLeod, Griego and Crawford!

Wrestling doesn't usually gets so much press, so I wanted to share the links to those stories.

The Beavers will next travel to Boise for another Pac-12 dual on Friday, Feb. 3. Boise's schedule says 7 pm MT, which would be 6 pm Pacific. OSU's schedule says 1 pm PT. Not sure which is correct.

Keep up the good work, guys!

Go Beavs!
