125 - Ronnie Bresser III |
The Beavers were ahead 15-3 when suddenly the tide and fortunes started to change. The weights went in order from 125 to 285. By the time the heavyweights took the mat, Oregon State led by 15-12, with 5 wins to Arizona State's 4. Unfortunately, ASU took a close match, 3-2, leading to a 15-15 tie.

As the crowd held their collective breath, the announcer went through the list of criteria for tie breakers. Both teams won 5 matches. No one had any bonus points. Finally, it came to match point totals: 51-43, giving Oregon State the point for a 16-15 win!!
Oregon State match winners were: 125 - Ronnie Bresser III, 133 - Jack Hathaway, 141 - Devin Reynolds, 157 - Alex Elder and 165 - Seth Thomas. Congratulations, guys! Every point counted! In this case, every point that all wrestlers accumulated added up, so it was a good reminder to never stop trying to score, never give up.
Coach Roberts and Honorary Captain DeFazio |
Our Honorary Captain for the meet was Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio! Peter has a connection to wrestling - in his own words:
"My dad was my high school wrestling coach and he taught me that you never give up, no matter what the score...."
Those are good words for us all to live by! Thanks for coming Peter!
