Pac-12's Complete - Beavers Take Second!

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,
The lights are out, the buses have left town, the Pac-12 tournament is over for 2018. Arizona State took home the big trophy with 96.0 points, Oregon State was second with 70.0 points, then Bakersfield with 52.5, Stanford with 47.5 and Cal Poly with 37.0.
A hearty congratulations to the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, Amar Dhesi!

Heavyweight Dhesi was one of Oregon State's three individual champions - Ronnie Bresser at 125 and Corey Griego at 197 also stood atop the podium this evening. Congratulations, champs!!
None of the Beavers placed lower than fourth.
Results:
125 Ronnie Bresser - first (seeded second)
133 Devan Turner - fourth
141 Jack Hathaway - third (seeded fourth)
149 Josh Reyes - third
157 Hunter Willits - second (seeded third)
165 Rodney Williams - fourth
174 Myles Terry - third (seeded fifth)
184 Bob Coleman fourth (seeded fifth)
197 Corey Griego - first
Hwt Amar Dhesi  - first
Notable - Myles Terry had what had to have been the fastest fall - Myles got one in 10 seconds! If you blinked, you missed it. Myles also had a match for True Second after all the other celebrating was over. Myles and Keaton Subjeck of Stanford had a wild first period of scrambles, but Subjeck managed a fall in the second period, ending Myles' hopes for a ticket to the NCAA's - for this year.

Sergio Mendez of Cal State Bakersfield won the award for most fall in the least time with two falls in 4:52.
The FALL Fan club hosted a pizza lunch for their members and guests during the break between sessions. Lunch was a great success, attended by 236 fans. Thanks to all who attended!
For all the rest of the details, please check the article at osubeavers.com.
Next up - the NCAA's. The Beavers will be sending at least four - Bresser, H. Willits, Griego and Dhesi. The NCAA's will take place in Cleveland, Ohio, March 15-17.
Go Beavs!!

Latest Update From the Coaches

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Pac-12 Championship Wrestling Tournament will be hosted by Oregon State University this coming Sunday, February 25 in Gill Coliseum.

Pac-12's This Sunday
The tournament takes place all day, starting in the morning and concluding Sunday evening. With only five teams, Oregon State, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield and Stanford, it is only a one day tournament.

Pac-12 Sessions
There  will be two main sessions.

Session I begins at 10:30, doors open at 9:30. The conclusion of Session I is expected to be around 1:00. Gill will be cleared at the end of the first session. Then a break provides an opportunity for lunch.

Session II begins at 4:00, with doors opening an hour before at 3:00. I was previously told it was 3:30, but the ticket office says 4:00. When I find out for sure, I will let you know. A short break of about 15 minutes is planned before the beginning of the finals. The finals will be televised by Pac-12 TV, set to begin at 6:00 pm.

Pac-12 Website
For all the information you need, check the Pac-12 website - the official web page of the tournament. More information will be added as the tournament gets closer, but there are a few things there already. You can find links for buying tickets or getting directions to Gill, for example.

Other Useful Links
If you can't make it to Corvallis, you can follow along on TrackWrestling. Track also always has brackets once the information has come out. Not yet.

Finals on television - Pac-12 TV at 6:00 pm

Tickets - can be purchased on-line or at the door, $20 for youth or seniors, $30 for adults (total - that includes both sessions)

Barometer article on Greg Strobel - a former Beaver NCAA champion who will be attending the tournament.Welcome home, Greg! Thanks to Craig Scharer for sending this link!

Brackets
Brackets are not out yet. Seeding is usually done the night before and then brackets are produced. You should be able to find them several places on-line - TrackWrestling, the Pac-12 tournament page, Oregon State's article about the tournament (not written yet).

You might want to print out a copy to bring along if you like to fill them out. There is sometimes a rush trying to get them out at the beginning.

NCAA Allotments
In order to advance to the next step beyond the Pac-12's, wrestlers must be invited to the NCAA's. Those invitations are divided among the NCAA Div 1 Conferences, generally based on how wrestlers are ranked. Each weight class is assigned an allotment and wrestlers are admitted to the NCAA's based on how they place in their conference tournaments and how many allotments that conference has. Once those assignments have been filled there are a certain number of wild cards which are announced later.

The allotments have been made. Read all about them here:
Thanks to Craig Scharer for sending those  links!

Pac-12 Pizza For "The FALL"
FALL Club members, don't forget, pizza and snacks will be provided for those of who you signed up by RSVP. Lunch will be served at the end of Session 1 in Reser Stadium at the Club level - third floor. Don't forget to wear your "FALL" ID badge for your free admission. Your guests are welcome for $5 entrance fee.

Odds & Ends
Craig Scharer, who sent many of the links included here, has been busy reading up on wrestling on-line. He found another interesting article out of Eugene. It has the story of a young woman who is a student at the U of O and now the President of the Wrestling Club team at the U of O. Thanks, Craig!

Latest Update From the Coaches
For those of you who did not receive it, the latest update from the Coaches Office is pasted below my signature.

Let's get a big crowd of orange and black in Gill to cheer the Beavers on to victory!

I must thank Luke Zalesky for this info, as I had not realized they would be doing a livestream on their FB page until we happened to run into Teri, Zack and Luke at a local restaurant right before 6:00. The video is just a cellphone, so it is a bit shaky, but at least you can watch!

You can also scroll  through the comments on OSU's Twitter feed.

You will also be able to read more details at both Oregon State and Bakersfield's websites, but at this moment, their articles have not been posted. When they do, links will be posted on their archives' page.

Beavers Hit Log Jam

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Beavers found themselves in a pretty deep hole after the first four matches of the meet with Stanford and never could dig their way out, losing to the Cardinal 15-21.

Ultimately, the Beavers did win four of the matches, but it wasn't enough to come out on top. Congratulations to the four who won -  at 197 Corey Griego - winner by fall, At Hwt Amar Dhesi who had an upset decision over #5 Butler, at 125 Ronnie Bresser keeping his streak going and at 149 Josh Reyes winner by 9-4 decision.

Many of the matches were very close. The very first was at 157. Hunter Willits lost 2-5 to an experienced Paul Fox. Bot the 133 and 141 matches were lost not only by a single point, but at the last second.

Do have to give credit to freshman Myles Terry, who turned in a gutsy performance at 174 against #9 Keaton Subjeck. The score at the end of round 1 was 2-4, round 2 was 2-4. Myles just about pulled off a big throw that could have won him the match, but Subjeck was able to use it to his advantage.

For further reading:
Oregon State's Twitter feed - scroll through here and find the video of Corey Griego's pin for the Beavs!
Stanford's article

The Beavers now have to pull themselves together, renew their confidence and head to Bakersfield for their final dual of the season as they visit the Roadrunners at 6:00 pm tomorrow. The Roadrunners are fresh off a 34-7 victory over Cal Baptist on Friday.

One last item as food for thought - this article from Associated Wrestling Press was shared by Ron Iwasaki who got the link from Marlin Grahn. The article is a list of reasons that Cael Sanderson gives as reasons "why (his) kids will wrestle".

Silent Auction Items For Banquet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The season winds to a close with the last two Duals of 2017-18 for the Beavers this weekend. Both should be exciting meets, as all three teams have been wrestling well!

Two Duals on the Road This Weekend
Oregon State travels south to face the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3:30 in Maples Pavilion. If you can make it, admission is free.

Then The Beavers head farther south for their final dual with CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at 6:00 pm., Feb 11. The Roadrunners will be celebrating their Senior Day at that meet.

Scouting Stanford & Bakersfield

To check out the opposition for these two duals, you will find more information in:
Bakersfield's article

Following the Action
Both of these teams are Pac-12 wrestling teams, but only the first meet - with Stanford - will be presented on Pac-12 television. Television is only used when both teams are in the "regular" Pac-12.

TrackWrestling will provide live stats for both meets. You can find those here:

Help Needed For Pac-12's
The Pac-12's are coming up at the end of the month, Sunday, Feb 25. Please make sure you have it marked on your calendar!

As far as I know, Evan Hooper is still looking for "towel tappers" to help out at the tournament. If you want to be really involved, get paid and get free admission, consider helping out. Contact Evan Hooper (evan.hooper@oregonstate.edu) if you are interested!

Pac-12 RSVP
FALL Club members, if you have not already received an invitation to RSVP for the Pac-12 Social, you should soon. Please respond as soon as you can. Food and refreshments will be available in Reser's Club between Session 1 and Session 2, approximately 1:00-2:30.

We want to make this available especially for Club members (and the wrestlers, of course), but we need to have a good idea of how many are coming. You may bring guests. Active Club members will be admitted free, guests will be $5 each at the door.

NCAA Tickets & Hotels
The grand finale of the season is coming up, March 15-17, in Cleveland, Ohio. If you need a hotel room and want to be with other Beaver fans, check out the attached flier. You have until March 1 to make your reservations.

Silent Auction Items For Banquet
Last, but not least, a look forward to the Wrestling Banquet that "The FALL" hosts every spring. We have a couple of unique articles up for Silent Auction at the Banquet. Check them out in this article on "the FALL"'s blog. If you have anything you'd like to donate to the Club, either for a doorprize or Silent Auction, please let anyone on the Board know. Thank you!

All of you California Beaver fans, this is your chance - head on over to Stanford on Saturday and Bakersfield on Sunday and cheer the Beavers on to victory! They will appreciate your presence!

Silent Auction Items For Wrestling Banquet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

While the season is just winding up, it is time to think ahead to the end of the season Wrestling Banquet, which will occur April 14, 2018.

One of the fun things we do at the Banquet - as at Socials - is to have items for Silent Auction. It is a good fund-raiser for the club. We have just received a couple of very special donations that will be auctioned off at the Banquet.

Gary Westford, a former member of "the FALL" Board, artist, educator and passionate former wrestler, has generously donated a beautiful 2007 trophy that he found in an antique shop and a framed poster from one of the most historic wrestling matches in recent Olympic history. Gary donated these items because in his words "... supporting the program for the greatest sport in the history of humankind is important to me." Thank you very much, Gary!!

The wrestling trophy
The Trophy

You can learn more about the Lakota Nation Invitational from their website. Wrestling is just one of the sports that takes place there.

Minimum bid for this work of art: $70

The Poster

The poster is  from the Greco-Roman Olympic wrestling match between Aleksandr Karelin and Rulon Gardner at the 2000 Olympic Games.

The Russian was expected to win his 4th Olympic gold medal in this match but was upset by American Champion Rulon Gardner. (Rulon happens to be one of FALL Club President Reynold Gardner's brothers.) Rulon won the gold and Aleksandr won the silver. The framed poster is signed by Rulon.

Minimum bid for this poster from wrestling history: $125.

Rulon Gardner poster - please note - the reflections on the glass in this photo are not on the artwork
Please consider making one of these items yours at the banquet. If you won't be able to attend, but would like to bid, perhaps you can talk one of your friends who is going to bid for you!

If you have something you think would make another good auction item, please think about offering it, also. Funds raised help The Club with expenses as we support Oregon State Wrestling!

Thank you for your consideration!

Beavers Roll Bulldogs 33-3

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

The Beavers gave their seniors a send-off last night and it was exciting! A crowd of 908 was on hand to watch the Oregon State Beavers take on the Fresno State Bulldogs and nearly shut them out, winning 33-3!

The five seniors were introduced to the crowd along with their parents before the wrestling began. Seniors are Cody Crawford, Izaak Tobin, Josh Parazoo, Jack Hathaway and David Henry.

The Beavers won 9 of the 10 matches - congratulations to all the match winners - Ronnie Bresser (by major), Devan Turner (decision), Jack Hathaway (decision), Josh Reyes (his win was by decision over a #22 ranked wrestler), Hunter Willits (by fall!), Myles Terry (decision), Bob Coleman (decision), Corey Griego (major) and Amar Dhesi (major over a #28 ranked wrestler).

The Bulldogs did not go down easily, they fought hard for every point they could get and did not give the Beavers any easy matches. The Beavers seem to be finding their bearings and ramping up their pace as the season races to a close. Even the match that Fresno took was close. Rodney Williams gave his opponent all he could, coming close to reversing the score in the third period.

For more information:

Don't forget to check the Pac-12 television website and watch the latest videos - one a recap of the OSU-Fresno meet and another an interview of Myles Terry.

Following the meet, fans and wrestlers gathered in The Club in Reser for a Social. There was a table full of doorprizes to choose from and a short program while everyone munched on pizza, veggies & cookies. Four of the seniors were present and came up to the stage to be interviewed by Pres. Reynold Gardner.

A few things we learned from them:
If you were the old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe - what kind of a shoe would you be? (Hey, I didn't write these questions.)
Cody Crawford - a Nike, that's what he wears all the time.
Izaak Tobin - EZ Shoes, because you have to stay cool.
Josh Parazoo - work boots (no explanation needed)
Jack Hathaway - slippers, that's what he is most comfortable wearing

Future plans?
CC - he is in the process of applying to the Corvallis Police Dept. (Good choice, Cody! Wrestlers would make great policemen or firemen!)
IT - work to make a little money, then he's off to medical school
JP - work in the family business (but he didn't say what that was)
JH - he's not making any plans for anything beyond the next month, then he will see. ( I think that means he's concentrating on becoming Pac-12 champ and then on to the finals of the NCAA's. Go Jack!)

Favorite music?
CC - country
IT - hip hop
JP - country
JH - indie

There were some other questions, but you get the idea. I'm sure we will hear more from these guys at the Wrestling Banquet in April.

Coach Zalesky was proud of the efforts of the team. In his recap, he told them since they won they get Tuesday off to rest up!

A big thank you to all the wrestlers and fans who came over to the Social on a late Monday night for some snacks and socializing before heading home. Many of those present were from the Portland area, some from Washington. Hope everyone had a safe trip home!

A couple of other notes for now - Oregon State has two more duals this coming weekend before the season ends with the championship tournaments. More on those in the next email.

Speaking of the tournaments - Evan Hooper is still looking for help for the Pac-12's. He needs two more "towel tappers". You will be paid plus get free entry to the event. Contact Evan if you can help: evan.hooper@oregonstate.edu

Fresno Coming on Monday
Former Oregon State Associate Head Troy Steiner left Oregon State to take on the challenge of restoring the Fresno State Wrestling program a couple of years ago. Now Troy is bringing his new team to Gill for a dual meet with the Beavers on Monday, Feb 5, at 7:00 pm.

Scouting Fresno
If you would like to check out how Fresno has been doing, you can read their articles for the season. They were recently defeated by Stanford 27-15.

Senior Night
Monday will be the final home stand for the seniors on the Oregon State team as far as dual meets go. The Pac-12's of course, will be hosted in Gill this year and there are still two more meets on the road, but Monday's action brings to a close the home dual season.

The seniors will be honored before the start of the meet for all their contributions to the team over the past years. Sometimes this happens before the start time of the meet, so you might want to be in your seats before 7:00.

The seniors are: Cody Crawford, Amar Dhesi, Jack Hathaway, David Henry, Josh Parazoo and Izaak Tobin. A big Thank You and Congratulations to all!

Following the Action
Again we hope to have a large home crowd on hand to celebrate with the seniors, but if you can't make it, you can follow in the usual ways, Pac-12 television, TrackWrestling, and Oregon State Wrestling Twitter feed.

You can watch a preview video of the meet on Pac-12 tv now. There is also a short video of Devan Turner's Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week Award from the week before.

Social After Meet
The FALL will again host a Social following the conclusion of the meet with snacks, door prizes, silent auction items and a short program. Hopefully we will be able to get all of the seniors to step up to the microphone and say a few words.

Last night, we were entertained by FALL Pres. Reynold Gardner interviewing Rodney Williams and Aaron Olmos. We learned that Rodney's best wrestling experience was "finally getting paid to wrestle" when Coach Z gave him a scholarship, and that Aaron's favorite music to wrestle to was Beethoven. (Sorry, Aaron, I forgot which piece exactly,)

Update From Coaching Staff

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Believe it or not, we are already down to the two last home meets of the 2017-18 season. And they are coming right up this weekend! That means Senior Night, the seniors' last home dual. Where do the years go?

Devan T. - Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week!
But first, a hearty congratulations to Devan Turner - named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week for his upset victory last week in the dual with Northern Colorado! Way to go, Devan!

Scouting Cal Poly
The Beavers will first host Pac-12 foe Cal Poly on Saturday, Feb 3, at 7:30 pm. Note - it is at 7:30, not the usual 7:00.  You can find more details in articles at osubeavers.com. See it from Cal Poly's view in an article looking to the meet with Oregon State and one reviewing the meet they had on Wednesday night with Bakersfield.

Following the Action
The Cal Poly meet will not be televised, but if you can't make it to Gill - although we hope you can! - you will be able to follow live stats from Trackwrestling.

Social After Meet
"The FALL" Fan club will again be hosting a Social following the meet on Sunday. The Social will be held on the third level of Reser Stadium, The Club Level. Pizza will be on hand, along with some coffee and lemonade, water, soft drinks, etc. Of course, cookies will be available, too, as long as they last!

The door prize table will be set up for you to check out and pick your favorite item(s) to try and win. Door prize tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Everyone who enters gets one ticket free. Entry is free for all FALL Club members, $5 each for non-members. If you purchased a Guest Pass with your membership, you may use that pass for a guest to get in free. Be sure to bring along your ID badges/guest pass for free entry.

We also have other items available for purchase: t-shirts, hats and lapel pins from previous seasons.

If you are a member and have not picked up your lapel pin for this season, be sure to stop by our table either in the lobby of Gill or at Reser where we have the pins for you.

Join "the FALL"
You may still join the FALL Fan Club if you would like. There are only two Meet Socials left. However, we are planning on holding a Pizza Social in the break between the first and second sessions of the Pac-12's for FALL Club members and Beaver fans. We will be asking for a show of hands for how many are coming so that we have enough. More on that in future emails.

We will have membership forms available at our lobby table or at the Social where you can sign up in person. We take cash, checks or credit cards (if the wifi is working.) You can also sign up on-line at the Club's Portal:

Fresno Coming on Monday

The final home dual of the season will be Monday, Feb 5 at 7:00 pm when Troy Steiner brings the Fresno Bulldogs to Gill. To scout Fresno, find more information in their article.

Senior Night

Since the Fresno meet is the final home meet of the season it will also be Senior Night for the seniors on the team. They will be honored before the start of the meet for all their contributions to the team over the past years.

The seniors are: Cody Crawford, Amar Dhesi, Jack Hathaway, David Henry, Josh Parazoo and Izaak Tobin. Hmmm, four of the six are heavyweights. Anyone know any good heavyweights? Looks like the coaches will be busy recruiting!

Looking For Tony Dressell

Update From Coaching Staff
Hello Beaver Nation,

Coming Up: The Beavers will take on Cal Poly on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Corvallis. On Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m., the team will host Coach Steiners Fresno State wrestling team for Senior Night, as we highlight the individuals who have given so much to this program. Please come support these athletes as we appreciate their hard work and dedication on and off the mat.

Beavers Recap: Last week, our Oregon State wrestlers defeated Northern Colorado University 34-10. We had great wins up and down the lineup. The highlight of the day was 133-pounder Devan Turners win over Rico Montoya (ranked #18). We also earned wins from Ronnie Bresser (125), Jack Hathaway (141), Josh Reyes (149), Hunter Willits (157), Myles Terry (174), Corey Griego (197) and Amarveer Dhesi (285). The Beavers plan to take the energy and momentum from this win into the next four duals and the Pac-12 Championship. The championship will be hosted by the Beavers in Corvallis on Feb. 25.

NCAA Tickets: The opportunity to get your tickets for the NCAA Championship in Cleveland, Ohio, has passed. Our staff has pre-ordered tickets for fans that had planned to attend earlier this season. We apologize, but we look forward to you coming next season.

Banquet: Looking ahead, the Oregon State Wrestling banquet is scheduled for April 14. We hope to see you there. Please email Assistant Coach Taylor Meeks at Taylor.meeks@oregonstate.edu for details.

Fall Fan Club: The Fall Fan Club is a group of dedicated individuals who help support our OSU wrestling team. This group plays a crucial role in the success of our program. For more information, or if you are interested in joining The Fall Fan Club, please contact Elizabeth DeAngelis at Oregon.state.wrestling.boosters@gmail.com

Pledge for Pins: The Pledge for Pins Program is a fundraiser that helps get new faces and talent in the wrestling room. It also helps support former OSU wrestlers, such as Volunteer Assistant Coach Joey Palmer, who are looking to pursue World and Olympic championships. Finally, these funds are used to help athletes travel across the country to develop and diversify their wrestling skills. Attached is our Pledge for Pins flier that provides more information on how the program works.
