Beavers 24, Cal Poly 15

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

Wow, and just like that our home season is over.  My dad Ron Iwasaki did the match recap below.

*********

125  Brandon Kaylor took down his opponent 6 seconds into the match with a Fireman’s and then turned it into a 4 point near fall at the 1 min mark.   Shortly after he gained the fall.    Beavs led 6-0.

133  Devan showed lots of confidence in his dominant – yet at times nonchalant – performance.  His opponent shot in at 25 or so seconds and Devan stymied Reyes with snagging his hip and temporarily tilting him.    With both on their feet, Devan grabbed a single leg – lifted it and tripped the back leg for a takedown.    Devan dominated on top w/Reyes getting a stall warning – the first period ended 4-1 and Devan had a 2:18 riding time.    Devan escaped 3 seconds in the second;  the rest of the period was wasted with Devan getting another takedown and letting him go.  End of the second, 7-2.   In the third period Devan let Reyes go 5 seconds in.     This was a good example of a bad example as Devan wrestled down to his opponent, ultimately winning 10-4 including 2:52 riding time.

141  Cal Poly’s Ryan tried a couple of cement mixers on Grant Willits.   No dice.   Shortly after Grant got the takedown in his typical unconventional scramble…later threw in his leg and pinned the bearded man.

149  Lane Stigall vs another mature man.   Both were way cautious causing the referee to comment: “Action gentlemen”…w/o much to report.   0-0 going into the second.   Lane escaped;  got taken down by a single leg; got an escape.  Now 2-2.    The “man” escaped in the third to lead 3-2 and danced around getting a stall warning with 30 seconds left.   Lane shot in with an entertaining scramble but time ran out.   Too little, too late as if Lane had shown more activity in the first – the opponents stall warning in the last period would have tied the score…or possibly his scramble in last – if started earlier – would have provided sufficient time to prevail.

157  Logan and his opponent Brawley Lamer resembled a couple of bull elks locked up.  Then Meek gained a double leg takedown and after a while Lamer escaped to end the first.  In the second Lamer deferred choice to Logan who started down.  This was unfortunate as the long-bodied Lamer – like his dad Chad – threw in his legs and slowly but surely stretched and twisted Logan to his back for the fall.

165  Aaron Olmos’ opponent was a different body type.  Stocky.   Aaron struck first with a single leg but easily let his opponent go.   Later, unfortunately there was not much to show from either as the most startling occurrence was announcer Andrew Stanfield booming:  30 seconds!    The Poly coach could be heard: “Keep him guessing”… and we all were.   Someone in the stands kept saying:  “Be First”…The second period was unremarkable with Aaron leading 5-2 and later 7-5 but in the third, Truax caught up to win in a scramble 8-7.

174  Jackson McKinney started with a nice duck under attempt..... After Miracle countered, then Jackson gained the takedown 2 min in. McKinney beat Dylan Miracle, final score 6-0 including riding time.

184  Both Colt Doyle and his opponent had similar rangy builds but Colt dominated throughout.   He hit an early spin under move that also gained 2 point near fall.   In the third he had another slick duck under that resulted in a takedown and a 9-3 win w/riding time.

197  J.J. had the upper hand vs his 12th ranked opponent Tom Lane for the majority of the match.   J.J. double legged Lane early and rode him for 1:41 ‘til he escaped with 57 seconds left in the first.   Things looked good ‘til in the second Lane escaped, takedown, cradled J.J. for a 7-2 lead.   He fought back to within 3 points but the cradle was costly as J.J. had 1:41 riding time and lost 9-7.

285  was last but not least as Jamarcus entertained throughout.   Jamarcus double legged his barrel-bodied opponent who was quick for his size and reversed Jamarcus who then escaped.    Jamarcus has athleticism but needs to work on basics like hand fighting off the whistle.  In the inverse of J.J. .  Jamarcus won 6-5 though Poly’s hwt had 1:25 riding time.

Beavs 24   Cal Poly Mustangs 15

***********

During half-time, heavyweight NCAA champs Jess Lewis ('69 & '70) and Howard Harris ('80) were welcomed onto the mat.  OSU Athletic Director Scott Barnes was in the stands today.  The celebration continued at our social following the meet where Coach Zalesky shared that he was a high school freshman in the stands watching his brother Lenny compete at the 1980 NCAAs in Gill.  He also advised that Howard Harris’ record of pinning his way to the 1980 NCAA title has only been accomplished by 4 other athletes and has not been done since.  Thank you to Scott Spiegelberg who got Howard back in the mix and we hope we were enough fun today to get him back next season.  It was a reunion of many Beaver greats, including members of Jess’ 1967 Giant Killers football team and 6’10” Doug Oxsen of the 1975 basketball team that made the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Jess Lewis gave a moving speech, calling the team up and told them he was passing the torch and that their wrestling needed to be exciting for themselves and for the boosters.  Amen!  He shook each wrestler’s hand and I hope they were as inspired as I am!

Senior Christian Robertson was honored prior to the meet and gave words of appreciation to his wrestling family at the social.  Bob Tomasovic gave an update on the Wrestling Endowment Fund which is at a healthy $5M and is supporting 3 of the current wrestlers.

Olympian/Penn State 3x All-American/Pac-12 and B1G announcer Ken Chertow showed up with the other half of his membership dues.  I told him Scott Lewis already announced to the crowd last time that the board was chipping in to show our appreciation for his dedication to the sport and to the Beaver program.  He said thanks and made a donation anyway. We are grateful to have him join us.

Fall board member John Kowalewski has been as prolific as a Christmas elf with his woodworking projects and this week, we auctioned his bourbon stand for $101 bought by Jackson McKinney’s grandpa.  John made 7 other wine stands that were sold at bargains with all proceeds going to the booster club.  Winemaker Pete Buffington from Silverton is donating his Abiqua Wind wine next season for more of these fundraiser projects!

Thanks to all who have been a part of our wrestling family in 2019-20 and best wishes to the team and staff as they finish the season strong!

Go Beavs!

Cal Poly 1pm -- social after

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,
We will gather for our last home meet tomorrow, Sat vs Cal Poly at 1pm.  The Fall board will be in the lobby at noon and Mike Denison will join us in greeting fans.  I am still shamelessly plugging for anyone interested to join our booster club through the link below.  The funds collected help us pay the caterer for socials and go towards paying for the team and coaches at our end of the season awards banquet.

Howard Harris returns to Gill Coliseum, the site of his 1980 NCAA Championship.  This local Oregonian was coached by longtime Beaver supporter and Fall Club member Jerry Lane at McNary High.  Harris pinned all 5 of his opponents, including future 4x Olympian Bruce Baumgartner, earning him OW.  What a year that was for Oregon State Wrestling fans!!  How Dale Thomas got the NCAAs to Corvallis is a great story -- ask any of the old timers for details.

Howard and Jess will be honored during the meet, and unfortunately the other Beaver heavyweight national champ, Larry Bielenberg will be out of town.  Howard's singlet from 1980 is on display in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater.

Following the meet, we hope you'll join us in the Loge, 2nd floor of Reser Stadium.  Howard Harris is bringing his family including wife, kids and grandkids.  Scott Lewis will again be holding the mic, doing a great job but mispronouncing everyone's names -- at least those he can remember.  Come for the comradery, come for the door prizes.  Board member John Kowalewski woodworked a special item that we'll be silent auctioning and my dad donated plants that we'll be selling as a fundraiser.  Come support the team and the legacy of Oregon State Wrestling!

If anyone is interested in the Minneapolis hotel, let me know asap as the block expires on Sun 2/23.

Go Beavs!

Little Rock Recap

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

It was a great day for the Oregon State Wrestling community on and off the mat.  Prior to the meet, Mike Denison joined The Fall board in the lobby, greeting fans and handing out bout sheets.  It was my first time seeing him since his massive stroke in early December and while he is still not able to speak much, his eyes and expressions told me he was digesting everything as I caught him up on board activity of the past two months.  Very few people have the passion and level of dedication that Mike has to Oregon State Athletics and we are so lucky to have his leadership in our community.  Welcome back to your native land, Mike!

Thanks to Brett Waner for an entertaining recap of today’s meet.

*****
Brandon Kaylor kicked off Saturday afternoon against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a 2nd major in as many days.  15 - 4 final score after 2 takedowns in the first 25 seconds, followed up by 2 rounds of 2 point near falls.  Brandon struggled in the 2nd period as he couldn’t escape the clutches of Jayden Carson and suffered a 2 point near fall during the period.  The 3rd period was all Brandon as he picked up a 4 point near fall and rode the entire period.  Brandon won 8 of his last 9 and is surging at the right time.

Devan Turner kept the fans a bit nervous in this one.  After a quick takedown 15 seconds into the match, the two wrestlers traded points until the end.  The 8 – 6 final score required some 3rd period strength and determination for Devan to get the win.  Paul Bianchi took a shot on Devan and despite having the positional advantage was overpowered by Devan for 2 OSU points.  After giving up an escape, Devan then bulled his way into another takedown with 30 seconds remaining to secure the win.

Grant Willits rolled to the 2nd major decision of the day with a 10 – 0 win.  The match started with plenty of action but no scoring until Grant turned what looked to be a cradle by Conner Ward into a takedown of his own.  Grant finished the period on top and quickly escaped as he summersaulted into freedom.  The 3rd period was all Willits as his takedown was followed up by a 4 point near fall and a ride out to end the match.

Lane Stigall kept things going for the Beavers with a 9 – 3 win.  Lane dominated this match from the start finishing with 2:50 riding time at the end of the first plus a takedown and 2 back points.  The momentum continued into the 2nd period as Lane started with a reversal followed by 2 back points.  It looked as though Lane might secure another major decision for the Beavers until a 3rd period cradle by Tyler Brennan ended those thoughts.

Logan Meek showed signs of life this weekend as he doubled his season win total with 2 straight victories  Logan’s quick single leg takedown was offset by a reversal and more blow for blow tradeoffs to finish the period 5 – 5 though Logan’s opponent had over a minute time advantage.   The 2nd was all Logan as his cradle netted him a 4 point near fall.  Another 2 back points in the third followed by an injury timeout with 15 seconds remaining.  Both sides agreed to no action in the closing 15 seconds to avoid a forfeit.   The 12 – 6 final score and 2 win weekend garnered Logan an opportunity to display his speaking skills at the Fall Club social after the match.  There he commanded the mic just as he did his opponent, confidently responding to whatever Scott Lewis threw his way.

Aaron Olmos got to enjoy time on the mat for the first time this weekend in an 11 – 6 victory after a forfeit win on Friday.  Olmos dug deep in his wrestling arsenal with a cradle, lift and throw and a reversal.  He also managed to power out of a single leg and bulled through his opponent for a takedown.

Jackson McKinney dominated his opponent ending the match in the 2nd period with a 15 – 0 victory.  McKinney started with a takedown manufactured by him circling around his opponent.  That quickly evolved into a 4 point near fall and 2 additional back points.  The 2nd period included another takedown and 4 more near fall points to end the match.

Colt Doyle made his presence felt this weekend with 2 straight shutouts.  Saturday’s 16 – 0 performance was pure domination though it started with the most gentle takedown ever seen by this fan.  Colt hung his opponent in the air by a leg and softly laid him onto the mat for his first 2 points.  It ended quickly after that with 4, 4, 2 and 4 near fall points were awarded to close the match before the first period came to a close with a tech fall.

JJ Dixon had the only fall of the night.  Random sidenote, JJ’s cousin gives great Lyft rides in Pittsburgh.  The Iwasakis, Jess Lewis, Scott Lewis and Bob Hawkins were surprised at the NCAAs when their driver mentioned he had a cousin on the Beaver Wrestling team named JJ Dixon.  JJ started his match with a powerful takedown including 2 back points.  Had Dixon not been at the sideline, he may have pinned during the opening moments.  Action was instead moved back to center.  It was in the 2nd period and after a sequence of 2, 2, and 2 back points that Dixon secured the fall.

Jamarcus Grant enjoyed a night off as his opponent wasn’t feeling lucky and opted to head for the bus early.   (Jamarcus was awarded a forfeit.)

*****

We followed the meet with a high-energy social in the Loge.  This week we had enough food, a microphone that worked, great door prizes and an energetic crowd celebrating the OSU Wrestling program.  Shout out to John Kowalewski who procured the door prizes and for the silent auction, he crafted a custom OSU Wrestling wooden wine bottle stand that holds 2 wine glasses.

Thanks to everyone who was there to be a part of this weekend!  We encourage all to join us next Saturday for our final home meet at 1pm vs Cal Poly.  The Fall will host a social after the meet and we are told 4x All-American, 1980 National Champion heavyweight and OW Howard Harris will be with us.  I’ll get more information from Scott Spiegelberg and send an update.

Beavers 28, Cal Baptist 6

Thanks to my husband Brett Waner for his recap of last night's meet.

******
Newly ranked Brandon Kaylor lead the meet off with a dominant performance.  The early takedown was followed up with a 4 point near fall and 2:22 riding time at the end of period 1.  Brandon was in complete control the entire match in a 14 to 3 win.  There was 1 missed opportunity that might have given Brandon a shot at a Tech fall.

Highly rated Devan Turner, #10 in RPI and Track Wrestling secured a comfortable 7 to 2 win.  Devan took a lead in the 1st with a takedown and ride out of 42 seconds.  Taking down in the 2nd he managed a reversal within about 20 seconds and then closed the 3rd with a takedown and remaining on top to end the match.

With Grant’s parents in attendance some may have thought he would be slowed down by the world-famous Pueblo green chili his parents certainly brought for him.  Must have been on strict orders to save the delicacy for after the weekend as quick reflexes allowed him to dodge a shot by his opponent and score 2 of his own.  The officials gave Willits a couple points on both a stall and caution but he likely deserved 2 more as he appeared to get a takedown prior to the buzzer in the 2nd period.  Officials believed otherwise.  Grant couldn’t quite turn his guy after another takedown in the 3rd but walked away with a solid 8 to 2 win.

Lane Stigall lost 4 to 8 in a match that was close until the end.  2 mistakes cost Lane the match as he gave up 2 in the closing seconds of the first.  It is likely Lane lost track of time as he seemed capable of fighting a few more seconds to avoid the takedown.  The 2nd period started strong as a quick escape was followed by an immediate takedown to tie the score at 4 each.  Needing 2 points, Lane takes a shot in the 3rd but falls victim to the 18 – 5 AJ Raya as he turns the failed attempt into a takedown of his own.

Logan Meek came up with a big 11 to 6 win in an exciting match.  Logan gave up a reversal, followed by a reversal of his own, then 4 point near fall and 2 additional back points.  The official missed what should have been a fall during the 4 point move but Logan was in command of the match.

Aaron Olmos had a flawless victory where his presence was enough to frighten his opponent into forfeit.  At the time, the Beavers simply needed 1 additional win to secure the victory assuming no bonus points to the Lancers.  The Beaver fans could rest easy only 6 matches in.

Jackson McKinney lost 2 to 5.  Jackson took his shots throughout the match but couldn’t quite get it done.

Colt Doyle managed a 2 – 0 win with a quick 11 second escape and then riding out his man in the 3rd.  Colt was completely dominant on top.  At no point did it seem Garrett would be able to break free.

JJ Dixon was essentially a duplication of Colt’s match with an escape and riding out his man to close the match.  JJ did separate himself from Colt a bit by power slamming his opponent to remove any hope of an escape.

Jamarcus Grant finished up the meet with a 3 – 2 win.  Jamarcus was great fighting off single legs throughout the match.  (Entertaining but his talents frustrate not only opponents – but also fans) Moving into the splits as needed as well as hopping on 1 leg toward the sideline to avoid giving up points.  Offense however was lacking (previously cited) until he made a dramatic reversal in the 2nd OT period.  The official almost awarded an incorrect 1 point escape before time expired in the 2nd OT but was waived off by the 2nd official to close the period at 3 – 1.  The 3rd OT period escape brought the match 1 point closer making that non escape meaningful.
*******

We hope to see you today vs new Pac-12 opponent Little Rock at 1pm!  The Fall board will be in the lobby at noon selling memberships and handing out name badges for our post match social in the Loge, second floor of Reser Stadium.

Cal Baptist Fri 2/14 (no social) & Little Rock Sat 2/15 (social)

Beaver Wrestling supporters,
We have back to back meets this weekend at Gill!  Friday 2/14 at 6pm vs Cal Baptist and Sat 2/15 at 1pm vs Little Rock.  The Fall board will be in the lobby one hour prior to each meet.  We are still selling memberships.  Olympian and TV announcer Ken Chertow sometimes drops by our socials and last meet he gave a deposit to join The Fall with the promise that he'll pay the other half this weekend!

There will be no social on Friday evening.

We will have a social on Sat afternoon following the meet.  It will be in the Loge, which is the second level of Reser Stadium (one floor below The Club where we normally congregate).

The sound system at last meet's social was a disaster.  After trouble shooting, the OSU Facilities staff learned that the cable connecting the wireless microphone to the system was damaged.  I was promised that there should be no further issues!

I have hotel rooms available for the Pac-12s and NCAAs.  If you'd like to make a reservation, please contact me.

Thanks again to everyone who has already joined The Fall.  For anyone else wishing they had, please sign up online!

Correction - Three More Meets

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Oooops, I missed one meet. We have two coming up this weekend, both are at home. In fact all three remaining meets are at home. Thanks to Craig Scharer for catching my error.

This Friday, February 14, Valentine's Day, we have a 6:00 pm meet with Cal Baptist (the battle of the Zalesky Bros, Jimmy vs Lenny). On Saturday, Feb 15 at 1:00 pm, Little Rock visits Gill for the first time.

The final dual of the season for the Beavers will be next week, Saturday Feb 22, vs Cal Poly in Gill at 1:00 pm.

We had a slow start to the wrestling season here at Gill. Now we have a rush as it finishes. Let's help the Beavers close it out in style with some big crowds!

Thanks to Evan Hooper for his Tweets on the OSU Twitter feed - the only way to tell what was happening, even if you were watching the Stanford live-stream. Must have been a new technology gone awry. The camera swung back and forth, apparently run by a robot that seemed to be more interested in watching the OSU bench - looking good, guys! - than the action on the mat!

Wyoming Meet Recap

Oregon State Wrestling supporters,
Benny & the Beavers

Friday night was a fun evening having the Beavers home again.  The recap below is by my husband Brett Waner and my dad Ron:

The Beavers fought hard and lost a close meet against Wyoming.  There was much to be excited about as even the losses were competitive.  The refereeing was controversial, especially to Wyoming coach Mark Branch, and in particular excessive ref-caused false starts.

The meet started at the 165 weight class.  Aaron Olmos kicked things off for the Beavers with a 6 – 4 win in OT vs Cole Moody.  He had a powerful takedown to begin the scoring and a few quick escapes.  The highlight was his takedown in the first period of OT with 1 second on the clock.  Olmos has improved a lot this year.

After this suspenseful win the Beavers lost 4 straight.  Unintimidated Jackson McKinney faced #10 Hayden Hastings.  McKinney took down Hastings early in the match but let him escape despite being near the sideline.  McKinney fought off a likely takedown to end the 1st.  Hastings dominated on top, dashing any hopes of an upset.

Tom Gienger & young Beaver fan
Colton Beisley had an early takedown on Tate Samuelson, but lost too, 8 – 3.

J.J. Dixon showed some fight but ultimately lost 9 – 5 to Stephen Buchanan.  In the first period it appeared Dixon was going down but he managed to fight through and create a takedown of his own.  He rode his opponent well and managed a nice escape early in the match.  Slow reaction time ultimately cost Dixon the match.  Dixon is a talented athlete with lots of upside.

Jamarcus Grant lost 2 – 1 to #18 Brian Andrews.  Andrews had too much weight for Jamarcus to handle.  More movement and searching for angles might yield better results.     Another very talented "small hwt" he would do well to emulate the styles of Jim Baumgardner, especially Jim Hagen and of course Jess and Larry.

At 125 Brandon Kaylor wrestled with a lot of energy and a dominant 15 – 7 performance over Jacov Svihel.   Though this was the sole bonus point match, Brandon's exuberance at the conclusion indicated perhaps he might have left something on the mat.

Devan Turner faced #6 Montorie Bridges.  The 7 –4 loss is not what was desired but Devan worked hard and was in reach of a win until the very end.  A couple mistakes were ultimately the difference in the match.   Turner has improved steadily each match this year.

Grant Willits brought plenty of excitement as is his usual style.  A reversal with 4 back points gave him   a   cushion to cruise into a 12 – 10 win vs Trevor Jeffries.  There were hopes of a major decision or better but an injury slowed Grant and allowed his opponent several scores late in the match.

Lane Stigall got the "upset" win over #20 Jaron Jensen with a final score of 9 – 3.  Stigall was able to fight off a leg grab and turn it into a takedown of his own.  In the 2nd after a reversal, he was able to generate a quick escape and had a nicely timed takedown to end the period.   Beavs then trailed 15-13.

Logan Meek wrestled Dewey Krueger for the opportunity to win the meet for the Beavers but fell 3-8.

The official write up by the OSU Athletic Dept:

********
Lobby team - Jana, Brett, Linda Iwasaki, Jess Lewis

Big thanks to 2x NCAA champ Jess Lewis
Jess Lewis & Don Conway
who again helped in the lobby and recruited new and old friends to join The Fall booster club.  He signed autographs, shook hands and the Pac-12 Network filmed some of this celebrity interaction.

Prior to the meet, the late Beaver wrestler Ken Noteboom was honored. Other class of '59 teammates in attendance included John Dustin, Chancy Ball, Tobe Zweygardt, Tom Gienger and Oregon State's first NCAA wrestling champion, Don Conway.
Before the meet, Ken Noteboom celebration

We had a great performance by Denise Tomasovic singing the National Anthem.  Live music is always a treat!

Wrestling alumni Tom Phillips, Chris Bielenberg & Benny
At our social following the meet, Ken Noteboom's son Travis and Ken’s fraternity brother Dave Socolofsky shared some fun stories about Ken.  Ken's sister, daughter, son and other family members were in attendance.  Thank you to Bob Tomasovic from the Wrestling Endowment Fund and Steve Sullivan from the OSU Foundation for coordinating this tribute to Ken.
Social in Reser's Club

Ron Sather tearfully shared the news that Greg Strobel sustained a spiral fracture to his leg from a bicycle accident.  The accident was on Jan 26, Donna's birthday.  Donna's memorial service will be on Feb 6 at Packer Memorial Church on the Lehigh University campus.  Teammates Ron Sather and Tommy Phillips are planning a trip to visit Greg.  Please continue to rally around Greg and the Strobel family.

The 20th annual Reser's Tournament of Champions was held in Hillsboro on Jan 31 - Feb 1.  This is another Beaver connection as Marty Reser and son Alex were both Oregon State wrestlers.  Sadly, it was one year ago that young Alex Reser passed away, and it was announced that in his honor, the Reser Foundation will continue to support Oregon State Wrestling through the Alex Reser Wrestling Scholarship.  More details to come.

Shout out to The Fall board members for the continued efforts, especially Scott Lewis and John Kowalewski at this last meet.  We registered 10 more households for The Fall at Friday’s meet including Portland State Viking Marlin Grahn and Oregon Duck Bruce Glenn.  Thank you to all of those who have already signed up.  If you have not yet, it is never too late to join us!  https://squareup.com/store/the-fall-fanclub/
