Zoom virtual social on Tues 2/9, recaps vs Utah Valley & Stanford

Beaver Wrestling Supporters,

It was great to have action back in Gill!  Register for the post-match virtual social which will be on Tues, 2/9 at 7pm, featuring Lane Stigall and Matthew Olguin and Asst Coach Isaiah Martinez.

Meeting Registration - Zoom

Thanks to my dad for the following notes from yesterday’s matches.

There were issues with the streaming and throughout the meet the canned crowd noise didn't match what was happening on the mat.  Additionally, the Daktronics scoreboard was hard to see and read. But it was great to have the team back in competition!

Utah Valley University is located just north of Provo, in Orem.  The D1 schools in Utah that abandoned wrestling are Utah State in Logan, Weber State in Ogden, Univ of Utah in Salt Lake City and BYU in Provo.  I believe Utah Valley’s program began about 10 years ago after BYU dropped.

125 Brandon Kaylor had a formidable opponent in #5 ranked Junior, Taylor LaMont.  BK started out well and fought off LaMont's single leg halfway through the first.   LaMont (down to start the 2nd) sat out and turned to escape 5 seconds.   Another single leg TD and the others were either singles of snapdown- go behinds.  LaMont majored, 19-5.

133 Devan's opponent Ty Smith (R Fr) had a nice duck-under 30 seconds into the first and then controlled Devan to start the 2nd.   Starting down, Smith escaped in 25 seconds.  In the 3rd, Devan escaped but coupled with Smith's dominance in the first period meant one more point for riding time.  Smith prevailed 4-1.

141 Grant Willits cruised to an easy win over freshman Stockton O'Brien.  Grant TD at 1 min by a shuck to a single leg.  He did a nice job of keeping O'Brien down.   In the 2nd, Grant performed a granby to escape then soon got a TD and sort of "turk" or torqued over for 4pts NF.  In the 3rd period O'Brien had escapes to be taken down repeatedly by either singles or snapdowns.  Grant won 16-3.

149 Lane Stigall lost a close match.   In the scoreless first he carried much of the activity.  Starting up in the 2nd he was riding too high and his opponent Cameron Hunsaker (Sophomore) escaped.  Lane escaped in the 3rd with a front roll.    After an escape Lane was close to a TD when time and boundary ran out. Hunsaker won 3-2.

157 Hunter Willits easily won over true freshman Danny Snediker, a Camas H.S. 2x state champ.  One minute in, Hunter hit a high single to a double for a TD.  Later he arm-barred Snediker's left arm and started to "run it" -- reminiscent of Larry Bielenberg.   However at that point, Snediker must have called "uncle" with injury time out.  In the 2nd, Hunter had a TD to Snediker's back for 6 pts.  The rest of the match was unremarkable, though Snediker did gain one TD but the final was  Hunter 13-3.

165 Redshirt Freshman/Fresno St transfer Matthew Olguin made his varsity debut over Kekana Fouret (also R Fr) easily 10-2.  In the 1st, Matthew used a fireman's for TD then a bar-arm tilt for 4 more pts.  Starting the 2nd down, he escaped to easily fireman again.  3rd period Fouret escaped for his only point which Matthew matched with his riding time, winning 10-2.

174 Redshirt Junior Colton Beisley drew a very tough opponent in #5 Demetrius Romero (R Jr).  40 seconds in, Romero countered Colton’s double leg with a throw-by for a TD.  Romero gained 4 more TD in the second period and 2 more in the 3rd, to couple with 1 escape and 1 point riding time, for 16 points.  Colton had 5 escapes, final score 16-5.

184 Ryan Reyes had a close match with Hunter Morse (R Fr) a former Hillsboro High state champ.  The low activity in the 1st resulted in no score.  Ryan down in the 2nd escaped in 6 seconds but the balance of the round resembled the first.  In the 3rd, Morse escaped about after 50 seconds - then with 30 seconds left Ryan grabbed a single leg - elevated for a TD.  The final score was Reyes 4  - Morse 2   (I'm not sure how Ryan got his 4th point - nor for that matter Morse's 2nd)?

197 J.J. Dixon started slow.  UVU's  (R so) Jacob Armstrong  had a TD in the 1st but inexplicably let go of JJ with only 10 seconds left.  Armstrong was down in the 2nd but couldn't escape.  J.J. escaped in the 3rd to tie 2-2.  Then with little time left, Armstrong body locked J.J and it looked bad 'til with both going down, J.J. managed a side head-lock for 2 TD + 4 NF to win 8-2.

285 Brian Barnes tried a front suplay early in the 1st that was not executed successfully.  His smaller opponent Chase Trussell (Soph) gained TD one min into the 1st.  Trussell was down to start the 2nd and escaped.  No more scoring.   Brian down in the 3rd - no escape - Trussell added 1 point RT and won, 4-0.

More Ron Iwasaki commentary on the Stanford dual

125 Brandon Kaylor lost to Jackson DiSario (So).  I didn't see much of this match, but the decisive score was 7-2.

133 Devan Turner had a dominant win over Freshman Jason Miranda.  In the 1st, he had an early TD headlock to his back.  Devan won, 12-4.

141 Grant Willits should have (could have) wrestled defending PAC Champ Real Woods who  is no longer on the team and apparently entered the transfer portal.  Instead, Grant dominated Luciano Arroyo (So) with 3 TD, 1 R, 1 stalling against Arroyo + 1 RT to win 10-2.

149 Lane Stigall lost to Jaden Abas (R Fr), 7-4.

157 Hunter Willits beat Requir Van der Merwe (R Sr), but streaming was down for most of this match and  at 165 lbs.  Final score, 6-2.

165 Matthew Olguin faced Shane Griffin  (R So) currently ranked #3 nationally, who won 9-2.

174 Colton Beisley lost to Tyler Eischens (R So).  In the 1st, Eischens scored a TD and a near side wristlock tilt to go up 6-0.  To his credit, Colton fought hard to escape including in the  2nd where he started and remained down.  Numerous times Colton got to his feet where Eischens would lift to take him back down.  Colton needs to learn how to use his feet to hook his opponent and block these lifts.

184 Ryan Reyes beat Jared Hill (R Sr) in a slow start, no points first period.  Nine seconds into the 2nd,  Ryan had an escape from a long sit out and turn in.  No more scoring.  In the 3rd, Hill (down) reversed Ryan who reversed, then Hill escaped.   Ryan got the last score - the first TD of the match with 10 seconds remaining.   It came from a single leg.  Final score, 5-3.

197 J.J. and Roseburg H.S. grad Haydn Maley (R Jr) provided lots of action and entertainment.   In the 1st they both got each other's leg in a scramble position normally not seen at 197.  Perhaps Grant Willits taught J.J. - who ultimately prevailed.  Later in the round, Maley tried - succeeded a front roll granby for a reversal.  Maley was down to start the 2nd - could not escape and J.J. had a 3:19 RT to start the 3rd.  He then escaped - got a TD and with RT won 6 -2.

245 Brian Barnes was quickly pinned in the 1st by Nathan Traxler (R Sr)  after getting taken down by a double leg.

125 – Jackson DiSario (STAN) decision #24 Brandon Kaylor (OSU), 7-2. OSU 0, STAN 3
133 – #18 Devan Turner (OSU) major decision #18 Jason Miranda (STAN), 12-4. OSU 4, STAN 3
141 – #16 Grant Willits (OSU) major decision Luciano Arroyo (STAN), 10-2. OSU 8, STAN 3
149 – #14 Jaden Abas (STAN) decision Lane Stigall (OSU), 7-4. OSU 8, STAN 6
157 – #15 Hunter Willits (OSU) decision #10 Requir Van der Merwe (STAN), 6-2. OSU 11, UVU 6
165 – #3 Shane Griffith (STAN) decision Matthew Olguin (OSU), 9-2. OSU 11, STAN 9
174 – Tyler Eischens (STAN) major decision Colton Beisley (OSU), 9-1. OSU 11, STAN 13
184 – #25 Ryan Reyes (OSU) decision Jared Hill (STAN), 5-3. OSU 14, STAN 13
197 – #31 J.J. Dixon (OSU) decision Haydn Maley (STAN), 6-2. OSU 17, STAN 13
HWT – Nathan Traxler (STAN) fall Brian Barnes (OSU), 1:55. OSU 17, STAN 19

Oregon State – Unsportsmanlike, -1 team point

In true Round Robin fashion, Stanford lost to Utah Valley with the same score of 19 – 16…so each team was 1-1 for the afternoon.

Here's the write up from Evan Hooper and list of extra matches:

OSU Splits Triangular against Stanford and Utah Valley - Oregon State University Athletics (osubeavers.com)

Next up, the Beavers travel to Fresno to wrestle Oklahoma and Fresno State on Sun Feb 14.

Also wanted to share that I saw on social media that Colt Doyle has been named a Student Graduate Assistant.  We are sorry that his career was cut short but are glad he's found another opportunity.  Congrats, Colt!

Go Beavs!
