A Fun Look Back At the Weekend and a Quick Look Ahead

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Got a couple of fun things for you to look back at wrestling events last weekend.

First, heard from FALL Club member and Wrestling Dad (Aaron/Mateo), Mario Olmos. He was able to attend the California Collegiate in San Francisco last Saturday. He shared this recap of the Beavers' actions there:

There was some exciting action this weekend at the California Collegiate Open at San Francisco State. Oregon State was well represented. Conner Noonan took 3rd place at 149 lbs and also came away with the most pins trophy. Drake McKee scored an amazing 12 points in the last period to win 14-13 against his opponent from Simon Frazier Univ. to take 3rd at 165 lbs. Rounding out the day, Mateo Olmos took first place at 165 lbs. beating Josh Annis of Cal State Bakersfield 11-9 in the finals.

Thanks, Mario, it adds a lot of detail to simply reading the box scores! (I took the liberty of adding the bold to his comments just to make the names stand out.)

He also shared a link to some pictures that they took of the guys. You'll find pictures of Mateo and Connor, Drake, Adam and Christian as well as the dads - Mario and Mike. Thanks again to Mario and Lisa!

Looking back to Sunday's meet with Northern Colorado, the Pac-12 site has a couple of videos up - a recap of the meet and an interview of Amar Dhesi. The recap has a couple of replays of Ronnie Bresser's amazing "flying squirrel". Don't blink, you'll miss it like I did at the meet :)

Looking ahead, don't forget, we have the last two home meets coming up in a few days. Cal Poly will be here on Saturday at 7:30 and Troy Steiner will be bringing his Fresno Bulldogs to Gill on Monday at 7:00 pm. Hope you can be there for both. Monday will also be Senior night for the seniors on the team.

Looking a little farther ahead, I've been told that Greg Strobel and his wife will be attending the Pac-12's, Feb. 25. So if you know Greg, this would be a good chance to say hello to this National Champ Beaver!

And last but not least, if you are planning on attending the NCAA's in Cleveland and wish to stay in a hotel where other Beaver fans will be - the FALL has arranged a block of rooms in a couple of hotels there. See the attached file for all the information and how to reserve your room. Deadline for reservations is March 1.

Beavers Trap the Golden Bears 34-10! & Cal Collegiate Results

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Whatever Coach Zalesky has had the guys doing in the practice room lately, it paid off. At the Social after the meet, Zalesky said that it's easier to get in a good practice at home than on the road. He added that their practices lately have been improving.

It certainly looked that way on the mat in Gill Coliseum this afternoon! The 604 fans who turned out on a lovely spring-like January day were treated to some great action as the Beavers beat the Bears 34-10. The Beavers won 8 of the 10 matches.

 Match winners:
125 Ronnie Bresser by tech fall, 20-5
133 Devan Turner upset #18 Rico Montoya by major 12-4
141 Jack Hathaway winner by fall!
149 Josh Reyes by major 12-4 in his first match as a Beaver in Gill! Welcome, Josh!
157 Hunter Willits by 3-2 decision over a fifth year senior
174 Myles Terry by major 15-7 after a close 2-1 first period
197 #15 Corey Griego by major 13-0 with a load of riding time
Hwt #8 Amar Dhesi by 21-9 major

Congratulations to all the match winners!

Rodney Williams represented the Beavers at 165 and Bob Coleman took the 184 spot, but neither were able to bring in a win.

Wrestlers, coaches and families and fans gathered at the Social in Reser after the meet. All enjoyed pizza, chicken wings, veggies and cookies. FALL club President Reynold Gardner brought up Devan Turner and Josh Reyes for an interview. Devan's favorite wrestling memory was his win tonight over a ranked D-1 wrestler! Josh's favorite wrestling memory was winning a National Championship for Clackamas Community College last year!

During the meet intermission for the television schedule, several contests were held with fans. One was identifying songs. The fan's answers were then compared to a video on the big screen of Devan Turner guessing the same songs. Not only did Devan get all three correct, but he's a pretty good singer! Good job, Devan!

For fun, if you want to see the flash of Ronnie Bresser's finale to his match or Jack Hathaway's pin, check the Twitter feed for Oregon State Wrestling. Scroll down through the comments until you come to the videos.

To read further details of the meet, check the article at osubeavers.com and for the view from the opposing bench, read Northern Colorado's news release.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, the California Collegiate Open tournament was held yesterday. A group of Beavers participated. Aaron Olmos was a champion at 165, Connor Noonan was 3rd at 149 and Drake McKee was 3rd at 165. Congratulations! Adam Rateb and Christian Robertson also wrestled, but did not place.

Worth mentioning - Connor Noonan continues his dominating ways. He won 4 of his 6 matches by fall!

Last, but not least, for those of you who like poetry, I recently uncovered a poem handed to me earlier in the year. Pam Wilson, a long time FALL Club member wrote a poem during the Intrasquad meet this fall. The poem was inspired by actual events at the Intrasquad. You can find the poem posted on "The FALL's blog. Enjoy!

If today's meet left you wanting more wrestling, you don't have to wait long. The next home meet is next Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 when the Beavers host Pac-12 opponent Cal Poly.

The final home meet will be Feb 5, vs Fresno, when former Beaver Assistant Coach Troy Steiner brings his Fresno Bulldogs to town.

More on that later.

Poem From The Intrasquad

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

Just wanted to share a poem written during the Intrasquad at the beginning of this season by Pam Wilson, a long time member of "The FALL" Fan Club. It was inspired by actual events at the meet. Pam gave me permission to publish it here. Thanks for sharing, Pam!

Photos From Wyoming Meet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

We are into the heart of the wrestling season now and  more wrestling is coming up this weekend!

California Collegiate on SaturdayThe last of the local open tournaments for the college season is this Saturday - the California Collegiate at San Francisco State begins at 9 am, Jan. 27. I'm not sure yet if any of the Beaver squad will be there. If any of you would like to follow the action there, you can find links to both the live stats for Track Wrestling or some sort of live video on SFU's schedule page.

Northern Colorado in Gill Sunday
The first of three home meets coming up will be this Sunday, Jan. 28, when Oregon State hosts the Northern Colorado Golden Bears at 3:00 in Gill Coliseum. Let's get a full house to help boost the Beavers to victory!

Scouting Northern Colorado
Check out Northern Colorado with their most recent article. It covers their meets for the weekend, first with Fresno, then the Sunday meet with Oregon State. They have three top twenty ranked wrestlers on their team, at 133, 165 and 184.

Following the Action
Of course it is always best if you can be here in person, but if that's not possible, you will be able to follow in a couple of the usual ways. It will be televised live on Pac-12 television. TrackWrestling will also have live stats if you prefer to follow that way.

Social After Meet
"The FALL" Fan club will again be hosting a Social following the meet on Sunday. The Social will be held on the third level of Reser Stadium, The Club Level. Pizza will be on hand, along with some coffee and lemonade, water, soft drinks, etc. Of course, cookies will be available, too, as long as they last!

The door prize table will be set up for you to check out and pick your favorite item(s) to try and win. Door prize tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Everyone who enters gets one ticket free. Entry is free for all FALL Club members, $5 each for non-members. If you purchased a Guest Pass with your membership, you may use that pass for a guest to get in free. Be sure to bring along your ID badges/guest pass for free entry.

We also have other items available for purchase: t-shirts, hats and lapel pins from previous seasons.

If you are a member and have not picked up your lapel pin for this season, be sure to stop by our table either in the lobby of Gill or at Reser where we have the pins for you.

Join "the FALL"
You may still join the FALL Fan Club if you would like. We will have membership forms available at our lobby table or at the Social where you can sign up in person. We take cash, checks or credit cards (if the wifi is working.) You can also sign up on-line at the Club's Portal: On-line Portal

Photos From Wyoming Meet
If you enjoy the great wrestling shots taken by Michael Denison, who serves as both our Treasurer and our photographer, be sure to check out his most recent work a the Wyoming Dual. They are posted on our blog. If you start with the first post in the series, you'll be able to scroll down through all three. Thanks for sharing your photos, Michael!
