Cowboys Ride Away With Meet

Oregon State Wrestling Fans,

A Sunday night didn't deter the Beaver fans. A crowd of 974 awaited the Beavers return to Gill  yesterday. Okay, a few of them were Wyoming fans, but not many. The fans had some action packed matches to cheer, and they had the OSU Dance team on hand for extra entertainment. It was not enough, however and Wyoming left with the win, 29-12.

The Beavs put up a good fight facing off against a good Wyoming team, but were unable to manage the victory. The meet started at 197 where Corey Griego made his statement on the mat, winning by tech fall, 17-2. Next up, Amar Dhesi at Hwt added a major, 13-4. Back to 125, a banged up Ronnie Bresser hung tough and got a 4-2 decision, leaving the Beavs ahead by 12-0 score. Way to go, guys!

The beginning of the 133 match was where the Beavers ran into the strength of the Cowboy line-up. Devan Turner met #7 Montorie Bridges, Jack Hathaway had the toughest contest - meeting #1 Bryce Meredith at 141. At 149 Kurt Mode tangled with #19 Sam Turner. Kurt was held scoreless in the first two periods, but kept fighting to get a takedown in the third period.

At 157, true freshman Hunter Willits came closest to a win against #10 Archie Colgan, losing a close decision 4-1.The crowd was into the match, urging Hunter on, but he just couldn't get there. Hunter has been wrestling a lot of ranked guys and has come so close to beating most of them. You're so close, Hunter! Keep going!

At 165, Rodney Williams filled in for an injured Billy Bigelow. Rodney's match was with #14 Brandon Ashworth. At 174 Myles Terry lost a 5-16 major and Seth McLeod had the final bout at 184, losing by tech fall in the first period. Final Score OSU 12 Wyoming 29.

For more information, you can read the following articles:

One note about the two articles - they must have gotten their ranking numbers from different sources. OSU lists Wyoming as #23 as a team. Wyoming claims a #11 team ranking. With five ranked wrestlers, including a #1, the #11 rank seems more likely. Wyoming also lists Sam Turner, their 149, as #19 while OSU does not give him a ranking.

About 60-70 fans, wrestlers and the coaches gathered for the after meet Social in Reser. They enjoyed pizza, wings, some veggies and some delicious cookies. A drawing was held for about 10 different doorprizes. FALL Club President Reynold Gardner interviewed Hunter Willits who was a good sport in attempting to answer Reynold's amusing questions. Head Coach Jim Zalesky wrapped up the evening with his comments on the meet and the season so far.

The Beavers will be traveling down to Tempe, AZ, for a Saturday, Jan. 20 meet with the ASU Sun Devils, the current Pac-12 favorite. As Coach Zalesky said, it will be a good test to see where we are at this point in the season. More details will be coming later in the week.

Go Beavs!
