Looking At the Roster For Intrasquad
Not sure if the coaches will give us a preview of who might be on the mat next Monday, Nov 6, for the Intrasquad.

A good exercise for learning your 2017-18 team might be a different look at the roster. Instead of going in alphabetical order, let's look at the team by weight class. Each name is linked to their bio page at osubeavers.com.

125 - Ronnie Bresser held this position two years ago. Last year, Bresser red-shirted and Kegan Calkins took the spot. Bresser and Calkins are the only two 125's on the roster, so this looks like a rematch.

133 - Devan Turner started last year as a true freshman but was sidelined by injury. Joey Palmer had moved up to 141 but then moved back to 133. Joey now is the Volunteer Assistant Coach, leaving 133 open. Again, only two wrestlers are listed at 133, Devan Turner and true freshman Grant Willits. So which one red-shirts and which one takes the spot?

141 - Things get a little crowded here. Joey Palmer started at 141 last year, but moved back to 133. Jack Hathaway then took over, his second year at 141. Jack has competition at this weight - Zach Evans, Kurt Mode (new), Connor Noonan, and Izaak Tobin.

149 - Graduated senior Joey Delgado owned this weight class last year, leaving this one up for grabs. Several Beavers could be vying for 149 - Kurt Mode, coming in as a sophomore (who qualifies at either 141 or 149), Alex Rich (Corvallis native),  and transfer Dakota Wall (Boise State).

157 - This is another open position left by a graduating senior - Abraham Rodriquez. Two Beavers are listed at 157 - Joseph DeMatteo and true freshman Hunter  Willits, twin brother of 133 Grant Willits.

165 - Last year Rodney Williams and Weston Dobler switched back and forth at 165. Dobler has returned to North Dakota. Williams has some other competition for the spot this year - transfer Billy Bigelow (Boise State), Drake McKee, Collbran Meeker and true freshman Aaron "Mateo" Olmos.

174 - This was one of the middle weights where the Beavers tried different guys to see who fit the best last year. Weston Dobler was the first, but true freshman (last year) Bob Coleman ended up as the starter. Bob faces competition from Clackamas transfer Colt Doyle this time around.

184 - Again, last year the Beavers changed this one around during the season. Corey Griego had been the 184, but Cody Crawford had to move up to fill in for an injured Amar Dhesi and Corey had to move up to 197 to take Crawford's place, leaving 184 empty. Bob Coleman started the season at 184, but fit better at 174. During the season, Seth McLeod transferred from Boise State. Seth ended the season for the Beavers at 184. Seth has some competitors this year - sophomore Adam Rateb and newcomer Myles Terry.

197 - Corey Griego is the only Beaver listed at 197 and he pretty much owns the spot as a returning Pac-12 champ. Perhaps one of the heavyweight guys will give Corey some mat time for the Intrasquad.
Hwt - As stated, Amar Dhesi was injured before the season last year started last year and knee surgery kept him out for the season. Cody Crawford stepped up from 197 and grew into the position during the season. This year both Dhesi and Crawford will have to battle it out to see who gets the spot. Two other big guys add backup - Josh Parazoo and David Henry.

Disclaimer - this is just my own analysis. I have no knowledge of who will actually be paired off for the scrimmage, but it was fun to check the roster.

Familiar Faces At EOU
Looking ahead to Thursday of next week, Nov 9, the home opener with Eastern Oregon. It may be the first time for EOU in Gill, but not for everyone on the staff and the team.

Ty Vinson, a Beaver alumnus wrestler, is the Assistant Coach for the Mountaineers. If you check over the team roster, Hans Rockwell, a Beaver last year, has turned up on the EOU team along with his younger brother AJ.

Other locals on the team are Caleb Ballard from Monroe, Oregon, and Ryan Ninman of Stayton, Oregon.

Beaver Alumni in MMA
For those of follow MMA,  some alumni have chosen to pursue that venue. Thanks to Craig Scharer for sharing a link to a story about Colby Covington's recent success. Turns out that another Beaver falls in the same weight category as Colby, Nathan Coy. Nathan has also had quite a bit of success in the sport.
