The same confident Oregon State team that
took care of business at Central Michigan last week took to the mat in
front of their home crowd in Gill this afternoon, dispatching the
Wyoming Cowboys 32-7!
Starting off the meet at 197, Cody Crawford gave the crowd something to cheer about with a fall in the second period. Amar Dhesi, #10, followed up with a 13-6 win over his #19 ranked opponent.
Going back to the beginning of the weight classes, Ronnie Bresser, #6 at 125, won a major over #15. Joey Palmer, #20 at 133, also won by major. At 141 Wyoming had #14 Bryce Meredith. Jared Reis filled in for Jack Hathaway and put in a scrappy performance, but came up short, losing by major 4-12.
At 149, Joey Delgado put the wins back in the Oregon State column with an 8-5 decision. At 157 Abraham Rodriguez
was locked in a very close battle. Going into the tie-breaker round of
overtime, Rodriguez held Colgan down for the 30 seconds, then in his
turn, escaped with about 15 seconds to go. The crowd was celebrating,
perhaps forgetting that the time was not over. A mad scramble ensued,
the buzzer sounded and the crowd was going wild until the ref held up a
"2 points green" signal, deciding that there was a take down in those
last seconds. That gave Wyoming their last 3 points of the day.
Next up, Seth Thomas at 165. Seth was behind 0-6 before
he turned the tables and started his climb with back points of his own.
He shut the match down with a fall at the very end of the second
period.
Tyler Chay added a victory of his own at 174 with a 7-2 decision. Corey Griego added the last team points with his 5-0 decision at 184 for the 32-7 victory.
Congratulations to the whole team and coaching staff! For more details, read Oregon State's article. To read Wyomings' take, check their article.
We had a good turnout at the Social following the meet. The menu today
was a baked potato bar and some delicious cookies. Reynold Gardner
interviewed Cody Crawford, Coach Z gave a short talk and some great
doorprizes were won. Coach Steiner talked a little bit about the Pledge for Pins drive, encouraging more people to participate.
The Pledge for Pins is an important fund raiser for the program,
making it possible to afford extra coaching positions, all of which
will add to the excellence of Oregon State Wrestling. To participate,
fill out the Pledge for Pins and mail it in to the Coaches' Office. You will find the address on the form.
Sunday, January 17, the Boxer Open will be held at Pacific University in
Forest Grove. No Oregon State wrestlers are listed as participants.
It's possible that no Beavers will enter. I understand it is more likely
that a large group will enter the Clackamas Open next Sunday, January
24.
The Beavers have a break to rest up before they make the push to the season finale. They open their Pac-12 schedule at ASU on Jan. 29, a Friday. That meet will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The Beavs return home to Gill on Jan. 31, Sunday for a 2:00 pm dual with Northern Colorado.
Go Beavs!
